Not related, and have no further informatoin:

From: "Notes on Kentucky Veterans Of The War Of 1812," by G. Glenn Clift, published by Borderland Books, Anchorage, Kentucky, 1964. These notes were gathered by the author in the course of research for a book about the River Raisin Massacre January 18-23, 1813, from newspaper files, county pension lists, county histories, cemetery and other local records.

p. 27
"Janes, Thomas. Pvt., Capt. Warfield Shirley's Co., KM, 23 Aug.-8 Oct. 1812; married Ann P. Golloher, in Adair County, 16 Nov. 1849; married first, Elizabeth Biggs. He was WIA at St. Mary's in Sept. or Oct., 1812. He died 12 June 1873 in Adair County. Henry County Pension List."
___
KM is probably KY Militia; and WIA is probably wounded in action.
I am looking for any information on Thomas Coleman, who appears on the 1810 Census for Columbia, Adair, Kentucky.

I believe came from Virginia, and his wife was Nancy Shirley. His father would have also been Thomas Coleman (in Virginia).

I am wondering if the Thomas Coleman on this census is the Thomas Coleman I am describing. And also, if anyone has any hints as to who the children are on this census. If my guesses are right, they would be Jefferson, John, Mary and Polly.

Thanks!

yes Hugh Beard was my 5th great grandfather. He had a son that was Hugh H. Beard....this is new information to me and very interesting! there are many Smith's still here near by to this day. My gg grandmother on my mothers side was Susan Louvinia (Smith) Wilson her parents were Elijah and Sarah (Butler) Smith, I had no idea there was a connection to The Beards and Smith's back then now my curiosity is over the edge. I will have to consult with my Beard guru in Atlants she is amazing on the history here she was also a Beard.

Wow, thanks so much for sharing this with me, I as well found this very interesting. I have traced my line of Beard's back to Virginia Botetourt county and after they came here to Kentucky via Tennessee my direct line stayed here in the same spot where we still reside since 1799. HOw ironic that these Biard's went to Limestone AL , becauce my 5th great grandfather Hugh Beard built the first jail here in Columbia (Adair county) in 1802 when it became a county from Green county also he is listed with 3 other men that laid out the city streets for COlumbia.... later he went to Bedford county TN and then went to Limestone AL where he died at his daughter Polly (Beard) Coffey's home( she was married to Absoleum Coffey), so there has to be a connection here......another ironic thin is Our next door neighbors are Finn's!!! I have found in old deeds where land was sold and other papers these were always folks by the last name of Finn that signed as witnesses on the document....I will look deeper into this when I absorb it all ...I am currently reading the digitized book. please keep in contact. thanks you so much Brent Beard

If that is the correct man, his parents were David Bryant b. 10 Feb 1808 d. 30 May 1862 and Sarah "Sallie" Grider b. 12 May 1816 d. 27 Jul 1900. David was the son of Adair County settlers John and Elizabeth (Unknown) Bryant.

I don't know anything about Thomas, but David and Sallie are buried in Lander Bryant Cemetery. I have prepared memorials (with the help of Ray Green) for them on Find A Grave.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=21...
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=32...

Those memorials have links to memorials for 5 of their children. If you know anything about any of the other children and where they are buried, I would love to add the information to my records.

Hugh S. that was the executor was the nephew of John Beard Sr. John Beard had a son named Sevier Beard that he named after the first governor of TN general John Sevier. There is a story that he took the wrap for Gen. Sevier over some indian killings that were not supposed to take place. John Beard Sr. died in 1820 which makes sense Hugh S. was executor. I still live next to sulpher fork and Short Creek which is a tributary off of Russell Creek which is less than a mile away. The community I live in is called Portland old Portland is amile or so behind the current store in a vaslley that is encircled by Russell Creek stacked rocks from the old Coleman Mill still stand on the creek banks. You may run across Caldwell's here as they were prominent in the area also of old Portland. The Finn's that are our neighbors border our land with theirs. I am looking for this Smith connection, I have a site here of 1802 tax list for Adair County that may be helpful it has some Smith's listed which you may have seen here it is http://www.kykinfolk.com/adair/Census/1802adairtaxlist.htm

I just returned from Salt Lake City researching Adair Co. for Smiths, Finn, and Beard. The Finns are connected to Beards. There is a book on the Finns under the title:
Biard Family. The Finns of Adair Co. are from Jackson Co., Tn. and so are the "Biard"s. You can access this book at this address: http://www.lib.byu.edu/fhc/index.php
Type in the search screen Finn and you'll get the digitized book. I found it interesting, it appears the Beards/Biards that went into Kentucky took the spelling of Beard. The Beards and Finns are only peripherally connected to my Martins of Green Co. and Smiths of Adair Co.

In going thru the Adair Co. records I found where Hugh S. Beard was the executor of a John Beard, I believe early 1820s. I wondered if John Beard was his father?
John Beard had property on Sulphur Fork Creek. Hugh S. Beard had property on Sulphur Fork Creek, and then other places until he had none.
William Smith paid taxes on 50 acres on Sulpur Fork Creek until about mid-1850s when his wife Catharine Smith begins to pay taxes on 50 acres on Sulphur Fork Creek.
My William or Catharine Smith were very elusive. They are not on the 1850 or 1860 censuses yet they are paying taxes there. There is mention in marriage records of Catharine Smith and William Smith as being witnesses or marriages in the home of.
As to the Finns, I found this:
The finns lived in a branch of Sulphur Creek, a very secluded valley near the comunity called Old Portland. Even today one would have to be looking for the community to find it. It is still a mile or so off the main road. Coleman had a mill that no longer stands & area people can still point it out.
If you are lucky enough to find out what connection my William Smith is to Hugh s. Beard, appreciate it.
Go to this link where I have my conclusions on my research:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

If, being on spot, you are able to add to this very mysterious family I'd really appreciate it. There are a lot of marriages I couldn't find on this family.
couldn't find marriage record of William "Perrin" Smith/Groves to a Sarah, late 1850s.

I've just looked at the 1870 census of Elija SMITH. In the household before him is William R. SMITH, age 48. In the household the other direction is George W. Pickett. What is interesting about this is living with the Picketts is Clarissa GROVES, ward, who is the child of OUR Wm. "Perrin" GROVES/SMITH, who died mid-1860s. "Pern" Smith/Groves' widow is not named in his estate which makes me wonder if she died also. Like I said, couldn't find marriage record for them. Looked under Groves and Smith.
You say your ancestor is Hugh Beard. I've been researching William Smith in Adair Co. This William Smith, in 1825, was placed in the guardianship of Hugh S. Beard by the court. The child was a foundling of a mother over 14 years old and unknown. He was raised by Hugh S. Beard and on the 1840 census he is living right next door to Hugh S. Beard and he has married with a family.
From the 1830 and 1840 censuses I've concluded William Smith was born about 1815 so he was about 10 years old when the guardianship was awarded by the court.
I've accepted that this William Smith will be a dead end for me, can only hope somebody in the Beard family has some records to clarify who he is if anybody knew.
