I have a CALVIN SHEPHERD/SHEPARD(my ggggrandfather) with a very muddled record. If someone could help me straighten him out I'd be very thankful. According to an 1860 census in
Monroe Township
Indiana Calvin was born in
Kentucky in 1820. He was married to Nancy Unknown,b. 1821, and had children
Preston (P.W.),James A.,Andrew F., Rice, Delphia and
Jess.
I'm almost certain my Calvin is the son of ANDREW
SHEPHERD and NANCY
CUNNINGHAM in part because of a strong continuation of given names (some of them not so common) in his offspring and theirs. However, some of my sources just don't match. Almost...but I still need some conclusion. The most obvious and easiest mismatch to ignore is that my Calvin (or someone else) has changed the spelling of
SHEPHERD to
Shepard after arriving in
Indiana. All descendants without an exception spell it
Shepard.
LDS records have this Calvin's d.o.b. as late as 1824; others as early as 1812. I'm assuming the
Indiana census is the hardest evidence to go by. Various records have Calvin
SHEPHERD born in
Adair Co. KY,
Russel Co. KY and Reddies River
Wilkes, NC. According to records these all appear to be the same gentleman. I'm willing to concede the poor memories of descendants and lax record keeping of the time, but I'm wondering if anyone can help me with a shred of evidence that I should make this leap.
