I have a Berry Sanders COOMER, born 1858, married to Nora, last name not known, born 1875, and several children. Could this be the Berry you are looking for?

A George Coomer makes surety of oath bride of age for my Matilda Ashbrook & John Elliot marriage in 1839. William
Coomer is married to her sister, Mariah, in 1836. Are these
your Coomers? I am researching the Ashbrook family. Wm & Mariah raise Matilda's children when they are orphaned after
1850. I cannot find Wm after 1860.t find Wm after 1860.

Thank you for your reply! I have learned a lot since my original post. I am descended from Mariah's sister, Matilda (who married John Elliott 1839). Yes, their mother was Christina Fry. She married James Ashbrook Apr. 28, 1811 in Wayne Co. Also, the Ashbrook twins on the 1870 Metcalfe census with Wm. and Mariah belong to Sophia Ashbrook, half sister to Mariah and Matilda. Believe George Coomer's wife Serina also to be an Ashbrook. Do you know anything about this? Are Berry Coomer(Adair Co.) and Wm. Coomer brothers to George?
Matilda Ashbrook last appears on Russell Co. census 1850, with son Wm., Ashbrook, age 10. The next record I have for William Ashbrook is a marriage to Mary Frances Lynch 1860 Russell Co. I was hoping if I tracked the Coomers, I might find some answers to my Ashbrook puzzle. What happened to John Elliott? Where was Wm. Ashbrook bet 1850 and 1860?
I have the line on the Fry/Frey family back to 1600s. I would like to have the children of Mariah and Wm. for my Ashbrook file. If you'd like to exchange info, please email me privately. briggs@vci.net

I descend from William Coomer and Mariah Ashbrook. Family tradition says that Mariah's mother was a Fry. Have you found anything to back that up? William and Mariah are in Metcalfe Co., Ky in 1870, don't think they ever lived in Adair Co., but Berry Coomer did. My Dad has a first cousin, Eva Coomer (mar Henry Scudder), whose parents were both COOMERs, her father descended from Berry Coomer and Sereptia Chambers, and her mother descended from William Coomer and Mariah Ashbrook. She is in a nursing home now, but has given me some information on the two Coomer families. Will be happy to share. Lillie Rackley

Calvin Shepherd

I have a CALVIN SHEPHERD/SHEPARD(my ggggrandfather) with a very muddled record. If someone could help me straighten him out I'd be very thankful. According to an 1860 census in Monroe Township Indiana Calvin was born in Kentucky in 1820. He was married to Nancy Unknown,b. 1821, and had children Preston (P.W.),James A.,Andrew F., Rice, Delphia and Jess.

I'm almost certain my Calvin is the son of ANDREW SHEPHERD and NANCY CUNNINGHAM in part because of a strong continuation of given names (some of them not so common) in his offspring and theirs. However, some of my sources just don't match. Almost...but I still need some conclusion. The most obvious and easiest mismatch to ignore is that my Calvin (or someone else) has changed the spelling of SHEPHERD to Shepard after arriving in Indiana. All descendants without an exception spell it Shepard.

LDS records have this Calvin's d.o.b. as late as 1824; others as early as 1812. I'm assuming the Indiana census is the hardest evidence to go by. Various records have Calvin SHEPHERD born in Adair Co. KY, Russel Co. KY and Reddies River Wilkes, NC. According to records these all appear to be the same gentleman. I'm willing to concede the poor memories of descendants and lax record keeping of the time, but I'm wondering if anyone can help me with a shred of evidence that I should make this leap.

I am positive I have corresponded with you before. But here goes again. My Calvin Shepard was born as late as 11/19/64 and in LeNoir County North Carolina. But this Calvin Shepard is African American. He was later adopted. His mother was 18 at the time of his birth. Any relation???

I believe we have the same WIlliam & Mariah Coomer, though I have some differences on their children than what you have. I have:
Juyetta (Juretta, Araetta) born 1837
Joseph Newton b. 17 June 1844
Daniel James (Jim) b 01 Aug 1849
Son - stillborn 23 July 1853
Mary C. b 18 March 1855.

I descend from Joseph Newton & Fannie York Stephenson thru their daughter Araetta Frances married James William Haskell Garmon. Joseph & Fannie had a daughter Nancy Myriah who married James Elliot Acree. Is this your line?
Lillie
PS Please note I have a new email address. Thanks.
