The Grinter House Historical Society may be of assistance. It is on the Historical register and many activites are held there during the year, ie Grinter Apple Fest usually in October, recently they had a quilting exhibit, etc. Visit the Grinter Heritage Center on the web for sites operating hours and other information. It is located at 1420 S. 78th and is a major part of Wyandotte County History. Other Delware Indian information maybe found watching census records etc. from the Wyandotte COunty berg of White Church (Hovey's, JourneyCake etc...)

Joe,
This is all wrong. My apologies. Apparently there is more then one Fielding Johnson. If you go to rootsweb.com there is quite a bit of information on him. Put in his name and then click World Connect and scroll down, there are two Fielding Johnsons, click on his name.

Apparently before the age of 38, Fielding buried two wives and two sons, none a Christopher.
Wives were Eliza and Sarah, sons Hiram and James who both died at one year of age.

Elaine

Joe,
Merry Christmas. I found another marriage for Fielding Johnson in the Indiana Marriage index. It really doesn't tie in with the ages of the older children but wanted to forward it anyway.
Fielding L. Johnson married Nancy Reno 6/14/1837 in Jackson County, IN.
1840 census from Jackson Co., IN lists Fielding and a female under 30 as well as a male and female under the age of 60. Probably parents. There was no name index on the 1840 census records.

Elaine

Hi Shawna! Many thanks for your reply! I have been immersed in the terrific and fascinating research on the Lenape Delaware community of Wyandotte Co. Can't believe I missed the Grinter family previously but was focused on Johnson Co., KS and not so much on Wyandotte.

Wish we all had the tradition of personal oral histories passed down through the generations!

Will contact your private email on some other details.

Regards,
KMF

Dear Elaine,
Thank you for your kindness in response to my query. Unfortunately, there is no mention of a Christopher here. I was seeking Christopher Johnson and his wife, Elizabeth, found in the 1870 census in Platte County, Missouri. I was hoping Fielding was his father, but unless Christopher was older than Thomas, I guess not.
I did receive a reply on my post in the Shawnee county section. That gentleman indicated that Fielding had indeed been married previously, but had no information on the first wife.
I will copy these pages for further investigation.
Thank you for your time.

Joe
I think you are correct, back in that time, I found that there were very few settlers out this far into Kansas area. I am sure that there is a connection. There is a book all about the Grinter Place, there house, and you can even still go visit it, as it was dedicated to history I believe. I wish I had more to share with you about your family, but I have not seen an mentions of them, although, I am still just now touching the first bits of history for them. I will share more when I find any info, if you have any questions or anything let me know. I am slowly gathering more and more info as time goes by and might be able to ask my grandmother any questions. Thanks for writing and I will keep in mind looking for more about the connection. I have found http://lenapedelawarehistory.net to be a great site for info on the Girnters and there family and friends. They have a lot of history there, you might look for info on your family as well. Take care!

My at home email is shawnacarpenter@mac.com, in case you'd like to write me there too!

Shawna

Shawna, I was fascinated to read this thread. I have just learned of Moses and Anna Grinter. It seems highly likely that my great grandfathers, Charles King, Harry King Sr. and Harry King Jr. living across the river in Wilder from 1870 on would have been acquainted with the Grinter family. Curiously, a death record for the **maybe** dau of Harry Sr.'s 2nd wife, Roxie Ann Ballard, mentions the name Grinter. So have been looking to find if this is an error/misunderstanding or if there is some connection.

I'm also interested in the history of the area so even if no connection, would love to share information if you have any interest.

Shawna, we may have corresponded about 5 years ago if you were then researching Joseph King (brother of my above great great grandfather Charles). Joseph was associated with Charles Boles and the Methodist Mission.

private email: kfanning (at) earthlink.net

Happy Holidays!

KMF

Thank you for your response. It was my father that worked in KC at Griffin. I found it in the 1929 KC,KS directory and again in 1930. I just recently found out Griffin had plants in Chicago where I grew up and thought possibly that is why he moved to Chicago. I learned of a friend from KC who had a relative living in Chicago who worked there. I did google Griffin and came up with some university books that had alumnae listed as working for Griffin but that is all I have found so far. I am in Chicago now but I live in FL and won't have time to go to the Newberry Library for research. I will have to try this summer when I come back.
Try to google Griffin and you will find the books. Keep in touch.

I was looking for employment records and a history of Griffin Wheel Company. My grandfather began working for the company in Chicago(this is where the company started) in the 1890's. When they opened a plant in Kansas City he cam here to be Superitendent.
I called the company in Kansas City and Chicago and they do not have records going back that far. They also did not have any written history. I have not tried any historical societies or libraries in Chicago yet. That might be a step I take. Was your grandfather connected with railroads? That might be why he moved from Kc to Chicago.

I am researching the history of Knowlton Edward Carson, of Wyandotte County KS, born in 1910.

Al I really know about Knowlton is that his father was William E Carson, Mother is Pearl Carson (Maiden name unknown) His paternal grandfather was possible William Holland Carson, Paternal grandmother is Anne Mary Friendly. His uncles were Henry, David and Frank.

Knowlton joined the US Army when he was approx 35 years old….he was an avid picture taker, and appears to have been a part of the force (or unit) that liberated the Dachau (sp) concentration camp.

Knowlton passed away in Tucson Arizona in 2000 (October 10th I believe. I know he was married prior during and after his service in WWII to a woman possibly named Susan (either he was married to a Susan or his daughter’s name is Susan) and was a well known attorney in Wyandotte County.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I was a young boy when I meet and worked for Roy. It was out at Tomahawk Hills Golf Course. He let me clean the horse stalls and do odd jobs for free rides around the trails. I hung around so much that he figured he couldn't get rid of me so he put me to work. It was the best job I ever had. I remember one summer Roy took around fifty of us kids on a three day ride. We went from Shawnee, all the way to Lawrence, around back through Olathe and back. The next summer we went for another three day ride, and made more memmories that have lasted, atleast for me, a life time. He also had us ride the American Royal Parade a couple years as the Roy Knapp Rough Riders. I hope very much to hear from some of the people that where in my life from way back then. Yours truley John Bozarth
Obituary Lookup Please for Lucy Sellers died 1924 in Kansas City, Wyandotte Co., Kansas

My grandmother's mother died when she was 10, and now my grandmother is dead. There is no information for her on any board. All boards leave "Lucy Sellers" information empty! I know she was married to Alonzo Earl "Lonnie" Dean, and they are on the Wyandotte census for 1910 and 1920. Is there any obituary for her in the newspaper around 1924? Thank you very much!!!

My sister and I took riding lessons at the stables in the 1950's. I hadn't heard that Roy was a saddle maker, only that he ran a dry cleaners in KCK. I wish I knew more about his history. He must have been a really interesting guy.

Roy's daughter lives in Burbank CA. I recently sent her a letter asking for information about my father's time with the Rough Riders, but I haven't heard back. She's in her 90's.

If you would like her address, please email me at mlind@lmi.net.

Thanks.

I knew Roy when he had a place on 87th Street in KCKs that bordered with the horse trails of Wyandotte County Lake. My husband, Carl Darrah, was close friends with Roy. Carl leased the stables at Wyandotte County Lake in the late 40's. I was told that Roy and H.Russell Moss made Saddles together in Coffeyville, KS. I'd like more information on that. Mr. Moss died in 2007 at age 96. He was inducted in the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame in August on 2009.

Hmmm. Now I'm confused. I do remember the name McCartens, but for some reason, I thought it was on Quindaro, near my grandmother's house. Childhood memories are sometimes hard to sort out.

We lived on N. 25 & Nebraska so neither store was particularly close. The groceries were delivered, so I don't remember going there much. We kids went to Twitchell's store on Washington Ave to buy candy since it was only 2 blocks away. Linda Twitchell went to Mark Twain with me.

Thanks so much for checking.

Margot

Just for kicks I looked up and found a George McCartens Grocery Store at 1622 Central Ave. in KCK. That's a long way from our Quindaro. This was from the 1950 KCK city directory.

Don
