I was a young boy when I meet and worked for Roy. It was out at Tomahawk Hills Golf Course. He let me clean the horse stalls and do odd jobs for free rides around the trails. I hung around so much that he figured he couldn't get rid of me so he put me to work. It was the best job I ever had. I remember one summer Roy took around fifty of us kids on a three day ride. We went from Shawnee, all the way to Lawrence, around back through Olathe and back. The next summer we went for another three day ride, and made more memmories that have lasted, atleast for me, a life time. He also had us ride the American Royal Parade a couple years as the Roy Knapp Rough Riders. I hope very much to hear from some of the people that where in my life from way back then. Yours truley John Bozarth
Hello Ricky, I have an interest is all people with the name of SMITHSON. I know where your Margaret SMITHSON lived in Monroe Co., West Virginia and can fill you in on her parents, George Albert SMITHSON and Elizabeth CALDWELL and how you connect to the SMITHSON origins in Maryland. I have a major amount of SMITHSON family information and always looking for more data. The 1880 Census of Douglas, Jackson Co. Kansas has given me some of the children, but I do thank you for the additional children and will add them to the database. We have a SMITHSON website with photos and some death certificates, etc. Would also like to use your query in a future issue of our NEWSLETTER that is now delivered electronically. You can also contact me at: smithsonfamily at gmail.com Let me know if you have obituaries, Bible records, old letters, photographs, etc. that you would be willing to share. Thanks for help on this family line.

My sister and I took riding lessons at the stables in the 1950's. I hadn't heard that Roy was a saddle maker, only that he ran a dry cleaners in KCK. I wish I knew more about his history. He must have been a really interesting guy.

Roy's daughter lives in Burbank CA. I recently sent her a letter asking for information about my father's time with the Rough Riders, but I haven't heard back. She's in her 90's.

If you would like her address, please email me at mlind@lmi.net.

Thanks.

I knew Roy when he had a place on 87th Street in KCKs that bordered with the horse trails of Wyandotte County Lake. My husband, Carl Darrah, was close friends with Roy. Carl leased the stables at Wyandotte County Lake in the late 40's. I was told that Roy and H.Russell Moss made Saddles together in Coffeyville, KS. I'd like more information on that. Mr. Moss died in 2007 at age 96. He was inducted in the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame in August on 2009.

Hmmm. Now I'm confused. I do remember the name McCartens, but for some reason, I thought it was on Quindaro, near my grandmother's house. Childhood memories are sometimes hard to sort out.

We lived on N. 25 & Nebraska so neither store was particularly close. The groceries were delivered, so I don't remember going there much. We kids went to Twitchell's store on Washington Ave to buy candy since it was only 2 blocks away. Linda Twitchell went to Mark Twain with me.

Thanks so much for checking.

Margot

Just for kicks I looked up and found a George McCartens Grocery Store at 1622 Central Ave. in KCK. That's a long way from our Quindaro. This was from the 1950 KCK city directory.

Don
Just a block west of Velvet Freeze was the Gauntier Theater. The Home Theater was at 21st and Quindaro. There wasn't a Quindaro Theater that I ever knew of
but before our time there was a Ligget Theater at Cissna and Quindaro. If you stood facing Velvet Freeze, most of the main business area was several blocks west or to your right.
There was a McCaugheys Grocery (we traded there) between Hiawatha and Hutchings streets.
Karl's Bakery was just west of the Quindaro State Bank at 18th. I can smell the donuts. I saw Karl about a year ago.
Don

Margot
I lived at 3022 Cissna as a kid and made many trips to that Velvet Freeze. I also worked at Lloyd's Drug Store at 1735 Quindaro for 6 years. I don't remember those apartments on No 18th.
Vernon Brown visited me a while back and loaned me a copy of Rodeo Rhythm.
It was great.
Don

Margot
Hi again, it's been a few years since we talked about Roy Knapp. I just read your recent posts and the replies about the apartments on No 18th. I have a 1950 city directory and found the same addresses for Geo. Lind and Jr. I looked up Samuel Wells and his address was 3126 No 18th. A Robert Wells was listed at that address as well. Sam is listed as a deputy district court clerk. Does that make any sense ?
Don Tracy

McCaugheys Grocery is probably McCartons. I remember going there with my mother. If you see Karl again, tell him my sisters and I still remember his donuts. I also remember the baker who sat in a booth in the front making frosting roses for cakes.

Now I don't know which movie theater we went to, the Home or the Gauntier. The Gauntier would have been closer to my grandmother's house.

Margot

Another respondent told me that my father was hit by a car while in a parade and his horse was killed. He never rode again. He never told us that story.

My father grew up at 1211 Georgia in the Quindaro area (just a short block from the Velvet Freeze ice cream store) and I assume he kept his horse at a nearby stable. Did Roy have one?

Margot Lind

Hi,

That address makes sense. Google shows that location is now part of the freeway. Sigh.

I got a call last weekend from Rosie Williams (?-I'm at work and don't have my notes with me). She knows Maybelle Knapp Cline, but says she hasn't been able to reach her by phone. Her mother (Evelyn Troop?) was a close friend of Maybelle's and is still alive at age 92. They lived at 12 & Quindaro, but were not involved with the Rough Riders. She shares my fond memories of the Velvet Freeze!

I sent Maybelle a letter this week, asking if she remembers anything about my father.

Thanks for finding the address.

Margot

What a wonderful thing you're doing! I'm looking for cemetery information. William Edward Mullen was shot and killed in Argentine on 22 Jul 1890. There were quite a number of newspaper articles about the arrest of the shooter, etc. and that his brother was arriving to retrieve the remains for burial in Brown Co., IL. Another article said his father was coming to take the body. There are no records that he was buried in any cemetery in Brown Co., so I was wondering if he was buried at a cemetery around Argentine. It has been suggested he might have been buried at St. John's Cemetery in KC. Thank you. Gayle

I don't mean to be forward, but if you would like I can check it out for you, I know how frustrating these searches can be at times. I grew up in KCKs and have alot of geneological resources here. Just let me know if you would like me to assist and in my weekly cemetary searches I will look for you and see if I can come up with any info for you. I will wait for your response before I check it out. If you would rather me not I won't. Just know how it can be hitting a brick wall, and there are times in this geneological search that seems to happen! Oh my, Ive been doing this since 2002 only had bits and pieces revealed and just 3 months ago I got an email on ancestry and now I have been connected with my great grandmothers sisters great granddaughter! My cousin! wow! Anyway let me know I'd be glad to assist you in your search since i have access to alot of the KCKs cemetary records.
respectfully,
Brenda Littlefisher

I am looking for more information on my family. I apoligize in advance if my formatting is wrong. This is my first time posting and my first attempt at geneology. I've traced my roots back to Kansas City, KS. However my Grandmother and Aunt have given me different sets of information, however neither of them seem sure about anything. Here is what I have. Any additional information would be appreciated.

My great grandmother was Ethel Gay (Brown) born in Kansas City, KS to Lutecia Jenkins (previously Lula Brown). Lula was married to George Jenkins after the birth of two chilren Lula and Myrtle Brown. George and Lula had more children, Myrtle, George, James, and Alfred in Ashland, KS.

Here is where the story gets confusing and I'm not certain of the information becuase my Great Aunt and Grandmother don't agree. It is thought Lula Jenkins mother was Pheobe Brown. Pheobe died when Lula was young and I am not sure where Lula grew up, however Lula had a sister named Mary Brown or Mary Clay later married and became Mary Wade who spent some of her childhood in Lathrop, MO. Then Mary went to live with an aunt, Annie CLay. There is also a Lawson Clay/Brown. Brown at some point may have been spelled Browne at some point, but the e was dropped.

Pheobe Brown and Annie may have had a brother from a later marriage of their mother's to another gentleman named McCullen who was white. They had a son named George McCullen who owned a barbershop on Minnesota Ave.

Sorry for the mish-mash of information. And thanks in advance for any information.

If the suggested resources fail for you as they did for me, You can order the death records of Wyandotte County for that period on microfilm by interlibrary loan from the Kansas State Historical Society library in Topeka.
I have been waiting over three months for any kind of an answer from Mr Bennett Green.

There is no charge. Just ask your local library to order the film from them. Go to:
http://www.kshs.org/genealogists/localgovt/microfilm/wyandot...
You will see what is available for Wyandotte County. Scroll down to Kansas City, KS for the birth and death records.
I found both birth and death records here that I probably would never have found otherwise.

I'll bet you were deluged with requests for help after you posted your message. I will add my "please" to the rest. I'm looking for any information on the deaths, burials and/or obituaries for William L. Black, wife, Bertha, and son, Leroy. William L. lived his life in Wyandotte County and is last found there on the 1930 census. His first wife, Jennie M Johnson died there in 1897 and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery. I appreciate anything you can find.

My whole family rode with Roy Knapp and we were in the Movie-
The newspaper listed it incorrectly. The name was
"Rodeo Rhythm". We rode from 1936 to l942 when he stopped the group because of the 2nd World War. However, he did start again, but we were older and had gotten rid of a horses.
I wish I had a horse today "Tennessee Walkers" are my favorite. Even tho I'm almost 80, I'd still ride. I'm very agile.
I received a card from Roy's daughter, Maebelle today, she's
91 and her husband just passed Jim Kline. She lives in CA.
Jude passed away very young. He was married to Helen Moss and they had 1 boy. I'd like to think his name is Judd (?).
I have a video of the movie and a marvelous picture of Roy Raring-up on Jude's horse Polecat. Somehow we had a few little Polecats! We had 9 horses all at one time in town on 27th St. across from Klamm Park between Quindaro and Parallel. I've been a widow for many years as my husband died at 48. So riding horses was the happiest time of my life.

I would like to respond to your march 2005 posting - I don't believe that the Fuhrs that own the Fuhr Furniture Store were directly from Germany. I believe they were Volga Germans as was my father, Peter Fuhr who came over from Russia in 1912. I am related to these Fuhrs back 4-5 generations. My father attended St Anthony's church in the early days here. Do you recognize the names Peter and Andrew Fuhr or Mona and Charles Vogel? Mona Fuhr Vogel was my father's aunt. I have visited St. Anthony's church and the Fuhr Furniture Store in Shawnee, Kansas. I think it has gone out of business now. Please respond.
