Hello,

I am hoping that someone can help me find the dates of death of Casper Meyer and Barbary Bice Meyer. They lived in Fredonia, Wilson County. From the census information I have gathered it appears that Casper died sometime between 1885 and 1895. He was born Cir 1817 in Germany. Barbary appears to have died sometime between 1910 - 1915. Some of the census' have her name as Barbara. She was born in Virginia in 1830. Can anyone help me with the dates of death or perhaps know where their tombstones might be in Wilson?
Thanks,
Mark
Hi Myron,

It looks like you've found the correct family and I suspect you're right that "Lonzo" is short for "Alonzo". This is at the very least a place to start and hopefully get farther.

The 1930 census is incorrect and I've often wondered why my great grandmother is listed as a widow. I've heard stories that Benjamin (he went by "B.F.") spent a lot of time away from the home for reasons that weren't exactly respectable and that Helen eventually got sick of it and told him to never come back again. Maybe the census was taken at a time when B.F. wasn't around so she said he was dead out of spite? Maybe someone else gave the info and assumed he was dead? We'll probably never know, but he was definitely alive. I have a photo of he and my mom at his nursing home that was taken in 1965 shortly before he died. Had he lived just a few more months, he would have been 100. By the way, another census (can't think of which off hand) lists Helen as divorced, but they never actually did divorce.

Although I can't be positive, I don't believe the Charles E. Havens you mention is the same great uncle of mine. I don't believe that my Charley Havens ever married. B.F.'s father was Harrison Eugene Havens and I have always been under the impression that the "E" in Charley's middle initial likely stood for Eugene.

How do you fit into the Havens clan?

Jami

Thanks for getting back to me so soon. Your info on Willie lead me to find the following:
Census - Jan 15, 1920 - Center, Wilson, KS - ED 231 - pg 20A [111 South 6th St]
Lyman, Lonzo head 30 abt.1890 M MO (MO-MO) Laborer, brick(?) yard
Lyman, Vinie wife 29 abt.1891 M MO (MO) IN
Lyman, Roy son 8 abt.1912 S MO (MO-MO)
Lyman, Willie son 4 abt.1916 S MO (MO-MO)

Looks like there is a 4th son as well. I can't help but wonder if Lonzo is short for Alonzo?

The 1930 census I referred to earlier had Helen listed as a widow, yet an ancestry tree I found had Benjamin dieing much later. Do you know which is correct?

Is Charles E. Havens the person in this record?
Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002
Charles Ernest Havens Marriage Date: 19 Feb 1925
Marriage Location: Carthage, Jasper, Missouri
Marriage County: Jasper Spouse Name: Anna Mabel Bartlett

Thanks,
Myron

Hello,

Although I've never figured out the father's first name, the mother of these grandson's is Vinnie. Vinnie, a name the Havens' used many times only for females, was the second child and eldest daughter born to Benjamin Franklin and Helen Sophronia (Woodruff) Havens. I have information for Vinnie as being born about 1891 in Missouri - that likely comes from a census. I unfortunately don't have anything else on her. I also have an older son named Willie listed as a child of this couple born about 1916 in Kansas - again most likely from a census.

Since my post, I was able to find a wonderful person who lived near Altoona cemetery that was willing to photograph all of the pertinent Havens stones for me. They are all on Find-A-Grave now. Let me know if you need anything else!

Jami

Fisher Family

I am looking for info on my Fisher ancestors. My grandmother, Frances Louise Fisher, was born January 20, 1939, in Neodesha, Wilson, Kansas. Her mother was Jean Pound from Kentucky, daughter of Thelma Ruth. She had one younger sister, Virginia Lee Fisher. Jean Burch divorced her husband and married Jay Burch, who is still alive to this day. After the divorce Jean and her daughter moved to Montana for some time before coming to Oklahoma. I do not know Frances' father's name but I know he was son of Elmer C. Fisher and his wife, Thelma, and a grandson of Richard O. Fisher and Cassie Louise Daniels. He had at least one brother, Amos Fisher. I am not sure if he was a native of Kentucky. Frances had two marriages: the first to Ross Lee Ketcher (1926-1966) from Miami, Oklahoma, son of Isaac and Mabel (Roberts) Ketcher, which produced five children, and the second to Charles Albert Collins (born 1940), from Tulare, California, son of Everett and Leona (Ponnell) Collins) which produced one child. If anyone has any info it would be great; if anyone wants to see a photo of the man in question I can post it on this board or send it to you.

My Great Aunt Ruth Goad married Glenn H. Matney Oct 1934. I was told in Okla City but so far I haven't found it there.
I know they are buried in the Fredonia Cemetery. Glenn died in 1967 and she would later die in Feb 1991. I would like to find out more on his family--parents,brothers etc.

Years ago, Ruth brought a niece and a nephew to Mangum with her. It seems like the nephew was named Glen but don't remember the niece's name. Mangum is where my grandfather Bill, her brother, lived.

Ruth later remarried.

I have recently started looking into my family genealogy and I found a post by you back in 2004 concerning Mackwell Sorley. In your post you stated that John Alvin Sorley (Mackwell's son) was your great grandfather. Well it turns out that John Alvin Sorley is my Great GrandFather, my Grandfather is Truett Maxwell Sorley. I would like to know what information you have concerning the Sorley's if would not mind sharing.

I recently found a great uncle buried in the Altoona Cemetery via Find-A-Grave. His name is Charles E. Havens b. 1892, d. 1929. I wasn't sure it was him but the person who posted his info also posted a photo of his headstone which luckily has a pictured of him on it. I was able to compare it to a photo I have of him and confirm that they are one and the same.

I have always suspected that his mother, my great grandmother is buried in this cemetery and now have even more reason to believe this. If anyone out there lives close enough to check, I would really appreciate this...I'm in California. Her name is Helen Sophronia Havens (I've seen her middle name spelled "Sofronia" also) and she lived from 1869 to October of 1934 if my records are correct.

Thank you in advance!

Jami

Hello Truett! It's very good to hear from one of the "Sorley people" as they are one of the biggest enigmas on my family tree! Are you one of Patsy's kids? I am in the midst of changing computers and haven't had a chance to install my family tree maker database onto this new one. I'll try to get that done in the next few days, and get you a more detailed answer as soon as I can. My grandmother was Ruth Sorley Russell, Truett's sister. I came across a Bible where she had written that her grandfather was Mac Sorley, born in Glasgow, married to Eliza Jane McIntosh. That was the beginning of my entire interest in our family heritage which included two trips to Scotland. I did find out a few things: that great great grandfather was Maxwell, not MackWell; that census record takers were terrible spellers (in one of the records, Eliza Jane was recorded as Sarde, nor Sorley), and recently I found a surviving line of Sorleys (one of John Alvin's siblings) living in Kansas. Other mysteries remain: for instance, when I found Maxwell Sorley's grave in Kansas, it was marked with a GAR star, indicating service with the Union Army (I have pictures of his and Eliza's tombstones). But, I can't figure out who would have marked the grave or why, as I can't find any record of what he did during the war. If you would like to correspond with me personally, my e-mail address is: rabsite@hotmail.com Let me hear from you, and I'll try to get my family tree data installed on this new computer. Thanks for getting in touch! RuthAnn Brown

So you are the gggrandson of Wm Thrasher's (Roberts father) sister Eliza. What was her married name? I have been searching family mainly on-line but find most of the sites cost so much and then produce no results. This is the best site I've found so far but as I mentioned I'm new to this. Do you find lots of information at the library? Where in Indiana do you live?
Gotta go to work now.
Jean

I have noticed that it is difficult to find marriage records. Yeah, I thought it was pretty interesting to see that the Baxter family from Ireland lived near the Thrashers. The thing that is really strange is that in the 1870 census the Thrasher family is still on the census sheet but the entire Baxter family has disappeared.
Jean

Hi Cousin, we must be like 15th cousin. Anyway it is really exciting to meet a relative. The census of 1860 shows the Thrasher and Baxter families on the same sheet, hence how Mary and Robert met. But strangely the 1870 census lists the Thrasher family but not the Baxter. I did find a Mary Baxter in Lancashier, England in 1871 who was born in Ireland who was the right age to be our Mary. And this is one year prior to her marrying Robert in 1872, where they married I have not been able to find. Marriage information seems more difficult to find.

I just found the Birth Certificate for my father Howard Coleman that lists Chella as "Chella Makel Thrasher." I have Chella's photo album. There are photos of Robert Thrasher and Mary, however, not too sure about William. Chella married Paul Coleman, which you probably already know, and had two sons, Howard and Ralph.

I've just started my research so haven't done much in the direction of Daniel. I've been so fascinated with finding an Irish great granddmother I've been pursuing that direction. Can you access my Family Tree on-line, it is the Coleman Family Tree? I'm still building it.

I appears that the Thrasher family has many generations in Indiana.
Cousin Jean

Re: Altoona Cemetery burials

I'd recommend contacting the W.A. Rankin Memorial Library in Neodesha, Kansas they have a lot of the cemetery listings. On rootsweb they have a page too with an obituary index (although they have more obituaries then is in the index). They have a C.S. Havens listed in thier obituary index and a Rose Ruth (Mrs. Chas S.) Havens listed. But I'm fairly certain they have an Altoona Cemetery index in their library and they'll look it up for you.

Children were Rosco, Irene, Emma, James William, and Oliver DeeJohn Phillips (my grandpa). Mainly trying to find their actual birth place, parents, and perhaps death location. Genweb cemetery search not popping anything up. Most of the kids were born in Kansas City, MO.

Cousin Jean,
If Chella is your grandmother, then we are 4th cousins, not 15th like you thought.
As I get & send my email from my local library, I can't carry a lot of my stuff with me, so can you remind me where was Robert in the 1860 census?
Wasn't it Ill. or Ks.?
I figure if Chella was b. 1876 & was the oldest, Robert & Mary was probably married about 1875, maybe somewhere in Ks.
I don't have much time today to do genealogy, as I'm going to a potluck dinner in a little bit.
Cousin Don

Jean,
Its me again, 5 mins. later. I looked at that 1860 Monroe Co.,In. census & see that the Baxter & Thrasher family was living just 2 houses apart, & I wasn't aware or I've forgotten that there was another Baxter family (William) here in Monroe Co., In. as this is not the one I have a Baxter file on at home. I have a cousin who married a Baxter who is descended from William & she is into genealogy. I might call her & ask if she might happen to know anything about this Benjamin Baxter.
There could be a record of Naturalizations here in Monroe Co. that might tell what part of Ireland they were from.
Do you know if Benj. & Amelia also went to Ks.?
Cousin Don
Jean,
I've been wanting to ask, haven't, so now I will, do you have a email address that I can write you directly to?
Everytime I write you, I have to fill out a Ancestry.com form & then everyone on the Thrasher pages, can see what we've been discussing, which I think should be more private.
Yes, my g-g-grandmother was Eliza (Thrasher) wife of William Riley May. She lived here in Ellettsville where I was born, raised & still live. I live about 2 blocks from the house she died in.
I looked through my Thrasher stuff & I don't have a picture of William Thrasher.
If your Robert & Mary (Baxter) Thrasher were living here in Monroe Co.,In. in Van Buren Twp., in 1860 census, then I would say she must be a part of the Baxter family of Monroe Co.,In. but I don't remember any of those Baxters marrying into my Thrasher family or vice versa.
After I send this message, I'll check the 1860 Mon. Co.,In. census for a Robert Thrasher. Are you sure he was in Monroe Co. in 1860? I was thinking more like Illinois.
I avoid the web sites that charge too.
Here are the sites I use every day & they are free.
genforum.com
familyhistory.com (these 2 are arranged by surnames, & are for queries you want to see or place & to reach researchers working on a particular surname
rootsweb.com go to World connect project here
gencircles.com
genealogy.com
cyndislist.com to find places in U.S. & all kinds of things
familysearch.com the Morman site
Cousin Don

Jean,
Any idea where Robert Thrasher married Mary Baxter at? I would say it was in Ks. somewhere as oldest child born there. If you could find that date & place, it might help you with Mary Baxter. As I'm not related to Mary Baxter, I wouldn't have the foggest.
I'm related on my g-g-grandmother Eliza (Thrasher) May 1821-1918 who was a sister to William Thrasher who marr. Eliza Carroll.
Do you have any pictures of William Thrasher?
Can you fill me on the descendants of your grandmother Chella & her brother Daniel?
I try to get all of my blood lines down to the last generation born if possible.
What was Chella's middle name?
Cousin Don
I am researching my great grand aunt, Melissa BLACK, dau of James & Catherine BLACK [1850 IL Census]. Her father died, and her mother md George WILSON [1860 KS Census]. Melissa md George STIGENWALT, 1864 in KS; she md Calvin STREETS, 1872 in KS; had 4 children; She was widowed, living with her dau, Bell BARNETT, wife of George BARNETT, in 1910, Sedgewick Co, KS; she was not with the family in 1920. Larry ELLIOT [World Connect Project] says she died 21 Mar 1928, location unknown. Is there a record of her death in Wilson Co? She lived there from 1880 to 1900.

Lewis family. Need any kind of help.

I am researching my husband's family. Joseph P. Lewis (b. 1838) m. Rachel R. ? (possibly Grant) sometime before 1860. They are in Daviess Co., MO then. Joseph married again to Susan Jones in 1880. This means that the six children found on the 1880 census with Old Joseph and Susan: 1)Joseph b. abt 1863 in MO; 2) George b. abt 1866 in MO; 3) John b. abt 1869 in MO; 4) Jesse b. abt 1871 in KS; 5) Ada b. abt 1874 in KS; and 6) Isaac b. abt 1876 in KS, were all Rachel's. Since the last three children were born in KS, I feel like that is where Rachel died. Old Joseph died in Wilson Co., KS, in 1908. Is anyone willing to help me research this family? Or is anyone still available who is connected to this family? I welcome contact.
