Since your 2002 post, have you obtained further info on John Cross?

I am curious because I am tracing a Cross family who were in Sibley, Cloud Co., Kansas in the 1870 census, including a son John b. abt. 1849 in Indiana. His father was Abiah or Abias Byron Cross, and his mother was Julia Burke, b. in Ohio.

Anything sound familiar?

Jane

I am trying to find any information on the Circle L Ranch which was somewhere between Liberal and Hugoton and the Peck family. It was owned by Chas. and Ida Peck in the late 1800's until 1930 when he died and passed it down to their son, Lyle S. Peck. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am researching the events surrounding the County Seat War and have uncovered several new bit of information. I will publish this when I feel there is enough to really add to the mountain of material already put out.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who knows any family stories or other bits of "inside" information. I have particularly noticed many relatives of Sheriff John M. Cross have posted here as several posts about Woodsdale Cemetery.

DonCross99 back on 16 Feb 2002, mentioned Sheriff Cross chasing Jesse James. If you still monitor this forum I would love to here from you.

The biography of Jeff Willis in the book "A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans" mentions his being in the haying crew at Wild Horse Lake. Does anyone know more about this?

These are the kinds of stories I am interested in. Anyone who knows of stories like this please post a reply.
There is a family history of them in the book "The History of Stevens County and It's People". The article is on page 463. There is also a photo captioned "Mr. and Mrs. William A. James" on page 462.
The article is entitled "The William James Family By Opal James (Jennings) (Arnold)"

It says that William A. James was born April 5, 1868, and died July 1955. His wife, Harriet E. (Lolis) James was born December 29, 1870, and died March 10, 1942.
The family came from Marshall, Missouri. Most of th mother's people came from Sedalia, Missouri.
The family came to Pratt, Kansas, around 1905.
It doesn't say what year they came to Stevens County but it does mention having relatives still in Pratt.

I won't post the full article here because there are so many people still living. It traces the children and their families.

I'm guessing that this is on Section 11, Township 32 South, Range 35 West. I really don't have a way to translate between latitude-longitude and legal description. This would be about halfway between Golden Plain Cemetery (in Seward County) and the site of Old Moscow. Do you know what years this might have happened in?

Road V is the old stagecoach route and also the proposed route of Sam Wood's railroad.

If your folks owned this house you should find most of the inforation in the legal papers to the property.

The book( "The History of Stevens County and it's People"; an earlier smaller book by Edith Thompson is sometimes called ‘The Stevens County History Book’ too) shows a John B. Patrick as having filed on a piece of ground at NW ¼ Sec. 35, Twp. 32, R. 37 in 1891. This is at the top of page 649 in the section entitled First Filings. This means the first people to ever file on that land after it was opened up to homesteaders.

The graves from Woodsdale were mostly moved to Moscow (I understand some were moved to Hugoton). In the directory at the Moscow Cemetery is a plat of the Woodsdale Cemetery showing lots with name written in. The text explains that this was prepared when the graves were moved. I have a close-up photo of this I will try to locate. I remember that the first four were the men killed in the Hay Meadow Massacre. I seem to remember Mrs. Ed Short too who committed suicide not long before the massacre. I don’t remember a Patrick but if I can’t find the photo I’ll check at the cemetery tomorrow. The graves are all together in a special section along with graves moved from the Old Moscow Cemetery. All are unmarked except for a stone near the road saying “In Memory of Woodsdale Cemetery”.

My Ramsey family came from Cocke Co., TN in about 1805-1806 and are participating in the Ramsey DNA project http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ramsey/indexDNA.htm...

I've contacted the Ramsey families from the famous Ramsey House of Knoxville, of the Hiram Ramsey of Damascus, Washington Co., VA, the Josiah Ramsey family of Hancock Co., TN and the William Ramsey of Sevier Co., TN and all are in some phase of the DNA testing to further help us with our focus.

My DNA, Kit 25468 has already linked us to three families and two of those families are in Middle, TN.

I see your early Ramsy family came from Hickman Co., TN. If your family is already participating please let me know which kit your associated with. If not I would encourage you to consider participating.

John

Do you know if this was his wife?
Jasper Short & family moved to Garden City, KS in 1886 -- close to the time that Ed appears in Woodson. My g-grandfather, James Taylor Short next appears in Columbia, OK -- same area as Hennessy where Ed Short moved after the massacre.

Moscow, Stevens County, Kansas August 1884 Claudious Merrill Crocker

I am searching for anyone who has information on (old) Moscow, Kansas during the year of 1884. My great grandfather Claudious Merrill Crocker listed "Moscow, Stevens County, Kansas" as his birthplace on his 1937 Social Security Application. He was born August 15, 1884. He spent early years in Washington and Idaho. He is known to have lived in Texas, Oregon, Colorado and California.

He was likely adopted by Samuel and Rachael Baumgardner) Crocker because his mother does not appear to have had in any of her own children in census records in 1880, 1885 and 1900. One relative indicated that he had been traded for a milk cow to a family with several children who was hard up and in a hurry to get out of Dodge, no pun intended. Unfortunately I do no know where Dodge is. It may have been Washington or Idaho.

Samuel and Rachael Crocker were in Brownstown, Illinois in 1880, Walla Walla County Washington in 1885 and Kamiah, Idaho in 1900. Claude Crocker is not listed in any of these census records although he lists them as his parents on his SSA application and homesteaded adjacent lands in the early 1900's in Idaho.

my grandfather was Arthur Beckerton Campbell and your letter came up when I was searching --- He was one of the old-timers mentioned in the article about
woodsdale cem. I heard a lot about that move as my father was in the crew that dug them up and moved them. It was a WPA project. My father lived in Liberal at that time but Stevens cty. before, and my grandfather and grandmother (Hestor Rosella Campbell) had their homestead near Moscow. Both of their families moved to Stevens cty. in the early days. They are pictured in the family photo of William W. Ramsey posted on this site. Leonard

No, sorry; it doesn't have names of people buried in cemeteries. But here is what it has to say about Woodsdale Cemetery:

"Old Woodsdale Cemetery is Replatted
In March of 1934, Stevens County engineer W.B. Crawford and his crew went to the old Woodsdale Cemetery to make a survey to replat it in preparation to move the graves to Moscow and Hugoton.
Some of the oldest residents of the county met at the graveyard trying to recall who was buried there and where the graves were located. There was no detailed account of those buried, and it was difficult to remember much about it.
Those old-timers who were there included J.C. Gerrond, D.D. Crotts, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Miller, A.B. Campbell, Lee Reynolds and others. Some of them could name and place the graves of the following: Sheriff John Cross, C.W. Eaton, Rolly Wilcox, Robert Hubbard, G.C. Clark, Fred Butterfield, James Cole, Mrs. Etta Brower, Marshall Wells' baby son, Mrs. Yeager and two daughters, Blaine Cox, Mrs. Ed Short, Frank Nugen, Oliver Brant and Mrs. Rhoades.
It is the opinion of the old settlers that there are a great many graves there and it will take lots of digging to find them all. --Hermes, 1934"

However, the Stevens County Library in Hugoton Kansas which is within a few miles or so of old Woodsdale, has cemetery records in their genealogy department. Their address and phone are:
Stevens County Library, 500 S. Monroe St., Hugoton, KS 67951
(620) 544-2301

If I lived in Hugoton or at least a lot closer, I'd be happy to look at the city cemetery and/or in the record books mentioned above. I WILL look the next time I go over there though--don't know when that will be--and post info here if I happen to find any on your John Patrick!!
Greetings Stevens Countians,
I am wondering if there is one among the subscribers of this message board who is acquainted with a member of the BONSALL family now residing in Stevens County, or aware of a Stevens County BONSALL who is into genealogical research. I have made a quick trip through the site and see no evidence of the same. I have recently researched the surname in Ford and Kiowa Counties and would be delighted if someone could put me in touch with one of their number from Stevens County. If anyone can bring this request to fruition, I am Gary Bonsall at <bonsall@socket.net>. Thank you very much for your time.
Kind Regards, Gary

Hello Donna: I have come across your query several times and the name Nipple has stuck with me (I guess because it is an unusual name and easier to remember than common ones!) when I've gone over to Hugoton, KS (near Moscow) in search of my own family history. I have kept my eye open for any Nipples in my searches at Hugoton library. I've not come across your Nipple obituaries yet, but I have a history book of Stevens County which lists and has a small bit of info on your Nipple ancestors. If you've not already seen it, I will be more than happy to share it with you. Kristina
I am trying to find information about my grandmother's family who immigrated to America from Germany in 1884 and homesteaded in the far southwest corner of the Kansas (Stevens County). I ordered the 1900 Stevens County census from the FHC, and was very disappointed that it only included three of the townships of Stevens County - Voorhees, Center, and Harmony Townships. The FHC has no other microfilm for it. Does anyone know where I could access Woodsdale Township records for Stevens County? I am looking for the family of Hermann MILLER and any AHLF relations.

Sincerely,
Katherine
Bellingham, WA
Hello. My name is Sharon (Bonsell) Miller. Our original Bonsell/Bonsall spelling was Bunzel, and John Bunzel and Anna (Zeilinger) Bunzel immigrated from Bavaria/Black Forest area about 1830/1840. I live in central Pa., and their are many Bonsell, Bonsall families in Pa. Although, Bonsell (spelling)is the most common for this area. I just happened to come across your reply, and though I would add a little to the "Bonsell, Bonsall, Bonsal and Bunzel" name. Sincerely, Sharon

The folks in Woodsdale township were included under Harmony township in the 1900 census for Stevens Co. The population in the county declined from 2,662 in the late 1880's boom years to 620 by 1900, almost 3/4 of the people having moved on seeking a better place. The Herman Miller family undoubtedly was among them.

The 1910 census for Stevens county also had the same three townships as 1900, Harmony, Voorhees and Center.

Iowa had an 1885 state census. You can check it to see if John was still in Iowa at that time. I'm not sure it it show occupations. It is available on microfilm through your local LDS Family History Center and also via interlibrary loan from the State Historical Society of Iowa.

Kansas also had state censuses, but Stevens was not included in 1885 as it was not yet a county and folks were just beginning to arrive.

I am looking for information on Frederick/Friedrich AHLF/ALF and his family. He homesteaded on a claim north of Woodsdale in Stevens County - December 1886 (NE 1/4 Sec 14, Twp. 31, R. 37). My great-grandparents Herman MILLER and Elisa/Elisabeth AHLF MILLER homesteaded on an adjoining claim in April 1887. I am convinced that there must be a family relation. They were from Germany, immigrated to America about 1884. Does anyone know of any information about Frederick/Friedrich AHLF/ALF?

Thank you for any help or suggestions,
Katherine Willis

I am looking for any leads and information relating to the family of my grandmother Elizabeth/Elisabeth Frieda MILLER, born 1891 in Hugoton, Stevens County, Kansas. Her parents immigrated to America in 1884/1888 from Germany. Her father Hermanm/Herman MILLER was born in Berlin, her mother Elisa/Elisabeth OLF MILLER was born in Hannover. My grandmother's sisters were Katherine, Alice, Anna, Henrietta, and Wilhelmina.

Does anyone know if there was a Lutheran church in the Hugoton area in 1890s, also why a German family would settle in the Hugoton area in the late 1880s. I cannot find much information on the internet, except that this is a flat semi-arid area, now important for its oil fields. The oil fields must not have been discovered yet in the 1880s. Any information or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,
Katherine Willis
Bellingham, WA
kurtkathkels@aol.com

Sarah Calvert died July 6, 1884. We have believed that she died at Iuka, KS. However, we have been unable to locate her grave site. It is possible that she may have traveled from Iuka to Hugoton with her son just prior to her death. Has anyone compiled a list of the graves in Hugoton's cemetary?

Sarah's first name may be Mary. She used the name Sarah most of her life, but the Belmont County, OH records list only a Mary Daniel marrying a John Calvert (her husband who died in Appanoose County, IA in 1854).

If someone could check the cemetary records and provide the inscription on Sarah's headstone, if it exists, it will be deeply appreciated.

Jim Calvert

William W. Ramsey (1838-1911)

Hugoton Hermes, Friday, March 17, 1911
William W. Ramsey was born August 7th, 1838, in Hickman Co, Tenn; and died at his home in Stevens Co., Kansas, March 7th, 1911. From Tennessee, he moved with his parents to Illinois. Here, when the war broke out, he enlisted in Co. K 98th Vol. Inf. of ILL.; serving three years. In 1865 he was married to Rebecca Tarrant. To this union were born seven children - four girls and three boys - five of whom survive him (Willis M., Albert V., Willie B., Ella H. [Campbell] and Anna Sutton, of Portland, Oregon. In 1883 they moved to Texas; from there to Pratt, Kan; and then, in 1887 to this County which has since been his home.
He was united with, and baptized into, the Primitive Baptist church in 1897; and has been a consistent Christian and constant student of the Bible since that time.
Bedridden since last March, he has uncomplainingly, and with an unshaken faith in ultimate recovery that he might be less of a charge to those who loved and cared for him, borne all his ills and pains and patiently awaited this reunion with the loved wife, who had preceded him to the better world by seven years and nine days. Saturday evening, the 4th, he became suddenly worse; and Tuesday his spirit took its flight, at the age of 72 years, 7 months.

It was the discovery of natural gas about 1918 and its later developement that turned things around in Hugoton.

Land was the primary reason most people came to Stevens county during the boom of the mid 1880's. By 1900 three quarters of them, almost two thousand, had given up and moved on from this harsh country. The Millers apparently were among them as they are not listed in the 1900 Stevens Co census.
