I am searching for information regarding my great-great grandparents, William Arter and Harriet (Lolis) James. They settled in and raised their family in Stevens Co, but migrated from Missouri. It is my understadning that William was of Dutch and Native American ancestry, and that Harriet was of African and Native American ancestry. I am interested in finding out what tribes they originated from as well as locating relatives.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who knows any family stories or other bits of "inside" information. I have particularly noticed many relatives of Sheriff John M. Cross have posted here as several posts about Woodsdale Cemetery.

DonCross99 back on 16 Feb 2002, mentioned Sheriff Cross chasing Jesse James. If you still monitor this forum I would love to here from you.

The biography of Jeff Willis in the book "A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans" mentions his being in the haying crew at Wild Horse Lake. Does anyone know more about this?

Suicide in house on Road V (5.22 miles SE of Moscow)

There was a woman who hung herself in the house that I'd lived in as a kid. The Box number of the house was either 652 or 651 and it was on the north side of Road V. It was about 5.22 miles SE of Moscow (37 16' 18.46" N, 101 08' 09.85" W) If anybody has got any information on this woman, I'd really appreciate you helping me out.

Moscow, Stevens County, Kansas August 1884 Claudious Merrill Crocker

I am searching for anyone who has information on (old) Moscow, Kansas during the year of 1884. My great grandfather Claudious Merrill Crocker listed "Moscow, Stevens County, Kansas" as his birthplace on his 1937 Social Security Application. He was born August 15, 1884. He spent early years in Washington and Idaho. He is known to have lived in Texas, Oregon, Colorado and California.

He was likely adopted by Samuel and Rachael Baumgardner) Crocker because his mother does not appear to have had in any of her own children in census records in 1880, 1885 and 1900. One relative indicated that he had been traded for a milk cow to a family with several children who was hard up and in a hurry to get out of Dodge, no pun intended. Unfortunately I do no know where Dodge is. It may have been Washington or Idaho.

Samuel and Rachael Crocker were in Brownstown, Illinois in 1880, Walla Walla County Washington in 1885 and Kamiah, Idaho in 1900. Claude Crocker is not listed in any of these census records although he lists them as his parents on his SSA application and homesteaded adjacent lands in the early 1900's in Idaho.

"Mrs. Malone had lived in Hugoton most of the past 25 years after moving to Stevens county from Meade county where she and Mr. Malone had homesteaded in 1904. They farmed northwest of Hugoton.
"Survivors include eight daughters, four sons and two brothers. The daughters are Dora Button and Mrs. Fred Hampton, both of Ulysses; Mamie Correll, Big Bow; Ruth Milburn, Hugoton; Lena Youngren, Council Grove; Ella Church, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Alta Wheeler, Asotin, Wash.; and Thelma Fairchild, Boise City, Okla.
"The sons are Cecil Malone, Big Bow; Jim Malone, Johnson; Orda Malone, Rico Rivers, Calif.; and Clyde Malone, Cimarron, N.M.
The brothers are Williams and Dean Porter, both of Wayne County, Ill.
"Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Christian church in Hugoton with Claude Lorts officiating. Burial was in the Hugoton cemetery."

William W. Ramsey was born August 7th, 1838, in Hickman Co, Tenn; and died at his home in Stevens Co., Kansas, March 7th, 1911. From Tennessee, he moved with his parents to Illinois. Here, when the war broke out, he enlisted in Co. K 98th Vol. Inf. of ILL.; serving three years. In 1865 he was married to Rebecca Tarrant. To this union were born seven children - four girls and three boys - five of whom survive him (Willis M., Albert V., Willie B., Ella H. [Campbell] and Anna Sutton, of Portland, Oregon. In 1883 they moved to Texas; from there to Pratt, Kan; and then, in 1887 to this County which has since been his home.
He was united with, and baptized into, the Primitive Baptist church in 1897; and has been a consistent Christian and constant student of the Bible since that time.
Bedridden since last March, he has uncomplainingly, and with an unshaken faith in ultimate recovery that he might be less of a charge to those who loved and cared for him, borne all his ills and pains and patiently awaited this reunion with the loved wife, who had preceded him to the better world by seven years and nine days. Saturday evening, the 4th, he became suddenly worse; and Tuesday his spirit took its flight, at the age of 72 years, 7 months.

woodsdale cemetary was moved to moscow cemetary and hugoton cemetary. in moscow 13-13 &13-14 are the spaces where the bodies were buried. remains were placed in boxes about two to a grave were placed there in 16 graves. ther is no mention of that name. in hugoton there is not a total list that i can find of people buried from woodsdale cemetary or old moscow cemetary. what names i have found he is not on that either. there is a lot of unknow man in the list. trying to get this info on internet as soon as i can. thanks

Sarah Calvert died July 6, 1884. We have believed that she died at Iuka, KS. However, we have been unable to locate her grave site. It is possible that she may have traveled from Iuka to Hugoton with her son just prior to her death. Has anyone compiled a list of the graves in Hugoton's cemetary?

Sarah's first name may be Mary. She used the name Sarah most of her life, but the Belmont County, OH records list only a Mary Daniel marrying a John Calvert (her husband who died in Appanoose County, IA in 1854).

If someone could check the cemetary records and provide the inscription on Sarah's headstone, if it exists, it will be deeply appreciated.

Am looking for information on individual said to be Ferdinand Love HALL. He is living in Stevens Co. in 1910 beside a Charles HALL who I assume to be a brother. Have no information on Ferdinand's family. A family member has found a note for a marriage of an Emeline or Ermeline (Hall?) to a Lewis HALL April 26 1851 but we don't have any idea if these individuals might be connected to Ferdinand.

Ferdinand was born in NE according to the census, parents born in MO and OH. Charles was born in IA with parents born in MO and OH.

I am trying to find information about my grandmother's family who immigrated to America from Germany in 1884 and homesteaded in the far southwest corner of the Kansas (Stevens County). I ordered the 1900 Stevens County census from the FHC, and was very disappointed that it only included three of the townships of Stevens County - Voorhees, Center, and Harmony Townships. The FHC has no other microfilm for it. Does anyone know where I could access Woodsdale Township records for Stevens County? I am looking for the family of Hermann MILLER and any AHLF relations.

Her second husband was Thomas Ballentine. They lived in Satanta and Hugoton, KS. She died January 10, 1968. I am trying to find where she is buried. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for information on Frederick/Friedrich AHLF/ALF and his family. He homesteaded on a claim north of Woodsdale in Stevens County - December 1886 (NE 1/4 Sec 14, Twp. 31, R. 37). My great-grandparents Herman MILLER and Elisa/Elisabeth AHLF MILLER homesteaded on an adjoining claim in April 1887. I am convinced that there must be a family relation. They were from Germany, immigrated to America about 1884. Does anyone know of any information about Frederick/Friedrich AHLF/ALF?

I am looking for any leads and information relating to the family of my grandmother Elizabeth/Elisabeth Frieda MILLER, born 1891 in Hugoton, Stevens County, Kansas. Her parents immigrated to America in 1884/1888 from Germany. Her father Hermanm/Herman MILLER was born in Berlin, her mother Elisa/Elisabeth OLF MILLER was born in Hannover. My grandmother's sisters were Katherine, Alice, Anna, Henrietta, and Wilhelmina.

Does anyone know if there was a Lutheran church in the Hugoton area in 1890s, also why a German family would settle in the Hugoton area in the late 1880s. I cannot find much information on the internet, except that this is a flat semi-arid area, now important for its oil fields. The oil fields must not have been discovered yet in the 1880s. Any information or suggestions would be much appreciated.

My grandfather is Benjamin Alberta Stevens born February 14, 1914 in Climax, Kansas. He married Estel Marie Williams in 1942 or 1943. Benjamin died September 9, 1951 & is buried in Wichita, Ks. "Marion Malone Funeral Services Saturday Afternoon"
"Funeral services for Marion Malone, 72 year-old resident of Hugoton and Stevens county were held on Saturday afternoon of last week at the Chirstian [sic] church with R.L. Wells, Methodist minister of Plains in charge of the services. Burial was in the Hugoton cemetery.
"Mr. Malone was in fair health until just recently when he became ill. He was retired and had lived in Hugoton for many years. Members of his family were called from far and near to be at his bedside and to attend the funeral services.
"He is survived by his widow and 12 children and their families. A "Thank You" card contained the following names: Mrs. Marion Malone, Mr. and Mrs. O.M. Butler and family, Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Looking for information on the family of Arthur and Lillie (Crabtree) Webb. They are found on the 1920 census in the home of her parents, Peak and Rosa Crabtree in Turney Township, Texas County, Oklahoma.

The Social Security Death Index shows that Arthur was born 21 Oct 1902 and died 15 Apr 1988 and Lillie was born 16 May 1902 and died Sep 1989, both were in Hugoton, Sevens County, Kansas.

I am looking to verify her parentage and find information on Lillie and Arthur's family. Peak Crabtree was the brother (half brother?) of my grandfather, Samuel Franklin Crabtree.
