Please check with Michael Hathaway at the Stafford County Historical Society and ask for an obituary. He can be found at this site. They are a wonderful resource for this county.

http://home.earthlink.net/~mjhathaway61/

Also, you can contact Jay Minnis at the Minnis Chapel and ask if he has burial information. If Charles Edward Johnson had a will it might be at the courthouse in St. John.

The Stafford Public Library is another place for research. The librarian is a wonderful assistant.

Hi- they say two heads are better than one, so perhaps someone can help with this one. I have a Charles Edward Johnson, b Aug 1872 in Marshall Twp, Clark County, Illinois, I have never really found a death date, but was told it was 1935, no day, no month. He died in Stafford, Stafford County Kansas At age 21 he was in Kansas and married June 21, 1894 in Pratt County Texas. He married Nona Marie Johnson, Yes, JOhnson was her maiden name & married name! I have a marriage certificate and pictures of the both of them. I have been told by much older family member that the two were distant cousins. I just cant seem to make that connection. I cannot locate siblings or parents for Charles Edward Johnson. I am thinking the only way I can hope to know who his birth family is , would be to secure a death certificate, but even that is not 100% because I dont have a day or month and find no online record that he really did die in 1935. I do know he is indeed buried in Stafford Cemetery. Any ideas and or help, clues, anything would be great! Thank you in advance. Enclosed, his marriage certificate and photo

Mabel Lamb was born Feb 9, 1895 , I am thinking in Iowa, but she grew up in Stafford, Stafford County Kansas, by some quick research it appears her father was William J Lamb and mother Eliza Lamb. I know that Mable had a sister Blanche and several other siblings. Mabel was a childhood friend of Ethel Johnson of Stafford Kansas ( ancestor of mine) Apparently Mabel was in the Theatre in Chicago Illinois and basically had her career in theatre. I have been unable to find any information about her. I dont know if she ever married, but did find a dod of Ap 22, 1973 in Los Angeles that could be her. I do have a couple of nice photos of Mabel , while she was in theatre and would like to find family . Thanks

W.R. Gray photo collection, St. John, Stafford Co., KS

The W.R. Gray glass negatives collection housed at the Stafford County Museum Library contains a wealth of genealogical information for those with Stafford County roots (and the surrounding area).

Here is the website where you can view some of the photos. About 4,500 have been uploaded to this website at Forsyth Library (Fort Hays State University):

http://contentcat.fhsu.edu/cdm/landingpage/collection/staffo...

For more information about the collection, including photos that are cataloged but not yet uploaded to the Internet, e-mail the Stafford Co. Historical & Genealogical Soc.: staffordcountymuseum@earthlink.net.

Here is the story as it appears on the museum's websites:

Windows to the Past:
The Story of the W.R. Gray Studio Glass Plate Negatives

by Michael Hathaway
Curator & Project Director

WILLIAM ROSSETTER GRAY was born March 22, 1865 in Greentown, Howard Co., Indiana, the first of four sons of Luther and Rebecca (Oxley) Gray. In 1883, he moved to McPherson, Kansas. He was 22 years old and working for a farmer in 1887 when he asked for his wages a few days in advance to buy a 5x8 camera he’d seen advertised in a circular. In his first job, he operated out of an overland gallery (photo car) owned by a teacher named Van Duesen. Communities they served were Fall River, New Albany, Fredonia, Neosha and Lafountain. He eventually bought the photo car from Mr. Van Duesen and was successful.

Around 1898, he married Mary Tipton (born Dec. 12, 1876, McPherson County, Kansas and died Feb. 4, 1958, St. John, Kansas). In 1905, W.R. Gray moved his family from Fall River to St. John and bought the studio at 116 N. Main. At that time, there were three children: Royal L. (1899-1981), Ina Amelia and Jessie Ruth (1903-1993). Two more sons, Arzy Robert (1906-1978) and Cecil Tipton (1908-1980), were born after they moved to St. John. The family’s home was also in the building. It stands today at the corner of 2nd and Main.

Royal and Jessie, as well as two of Mr. Gray’s brothers became photographers. Royal opened a studio in Ulysses, Kansas in 1931 and served that community until his death in 1980. Dr. Arzy Gray worked as a chemist for Eastman Kodak.

Jessie attended the Southern Branch of University of California (now UCLA) from 1926-1929 and became her father’s business partner in 1940. After W.R. Gray died on Aug. 2, 1947, Jessie took over the studio. She specialized in the art of tinting and enjoyed working with landscapes. The desk she used in this work is on display at the Stafford County Museum as are several of Mr. Gray’s cameras and other tools of his trade.

Jessie went into full retirement in 1981 and donated the glass plate negatives to the Stafford County Museum in 1986.

We estimate there are about 29,000 negatives in the collection. We’ve been told that although there are larger glass negative collections in the country, ours is probably the largest collection specific to one geographic area.

WHAT IS A GLASS PLATE NEGATIVE?

A glass plate negative is a reversed photographic image transferred onto a piece of glass, which is then developed into a photographic print. This technology came in to use in the early 1850s.

The first types of glass negatives were known as “wet plate” negatives and were used until about 1880. A photographer would coat a piece of glass with a collodian emulsion and then expose it before it dried.

After 1880, “dry plate” negatives came in to use. That process used a silver gelatin emulsion that was applied by the manufacturer, not the photographer. The emulsion dried and then the pre-sensitized plates could be stored until the photographer needed it, making the process much more convenient. Mr. Gray only worked with dry-plate negatives.

CONSERVATION

We have received three Kansas Humanities Council grants, three local community grants and two private donations that have helped us process about one-third of the collection.

The conservation process involves brushing the emulsion side of the negative with an anti-static whisk brush and washing the shiny glass side with a cotton ball dipped in distilled water. After the negative dries, it is assigned a new catalog number and placed in an acid-free four-flap folder and placed in an acid-free box.

Since Mr. Gray numbered most of the negatives and recorded information about them in 11 ledgers, which we also have, volunteers are able to record information about each negative on a catalog sheet. Information is usually limited to the photo’s date and client’s name who originally ordered the photo, but that is usually enough to determine which family the photo belongs to or to conduct further research. The catalog sheet is then given to a typist who enters the data in our computer database.

WINDOWS TO THE PAST

Those who have worked with the negatives have come to understand that Mr. Gray was not only a photographer, but an accomplished and respected artist. He was an expert at composition and lighting and his photos are true works of art.

Images in the negatives reveal glimpses into what life was like in central Kansas in the early part of the 20th century. From these negatives, volunteers have learned about the lifestyles of St. John and area citizens. Revealed in the photos are clues about their cultural and leisure time activities as well as work, schools, churches, clothes, vehicles, homes, pets and farm animals.

Although a good number of the negatives depict formal studio shots, there are still many surprises. Volunteers cannot predict what they might see when they peer into these little windows to the past. Surprises have included photos of surgical scars, medical conditions, crime scenes, street scenes, festivals, parades, traveling entertainers and shows, local and visiting athletes, oversized produce (pumpkins, squash, etc.), long-defunct stores and other businesses, farmsteads and harvest crews.

W.R. Gray’s studio also served the community as an early day Kinkos, where clients ordered photos of older photographs for duplication purposes as well as legal and vital statistic documents, cancelled checks, local maps and military papers dating as far back as the Civil War.

By studying these photos one can find clues as to what was important to the people who lived here 100 years before us. We find that we are not so very different from the folks who lived here a century ago. What was important to the people back then is the same as what is important to us now. Styles, fads and technology may change in the blink of an eye, but basic human values and needs remain the same: love of beauty and truth – and what shines through most in these photos – the love and all-encompassing importance of family.

You may also view photos of Mr. Gray and the studio at the museum website:

http://home.earthlink.net/~mjhathaway61/id1.html
Roxanna, I am still digging through my genealogy things to find the photos of Seward Cemetery...Trust me I have many. Any way, I did come across a note from my dad regarding some dates off of headstones and there are two Mike Belgers buried there. I will send you the dates shortly.
Marlene

Ok I have not found all of the photos yet, apparently I have filed the gen. photos in a very good hiding place. Anyway, I did find the notes my dad made and the dates of the two Michael Belgers buried in Seward's cemetery (St Francis) are birth 1885 Death 1918 and birth 1898 death 1910. Of course Sarah Jane is there and her headstone says Jane Belger 1852-1936. Frank Belger 1888 to 1964. Of course those two Mike Belgers can't be S J's husband. I will look better when I am there this spring. I do have a baseball photo with Uncle PL Keenan and Mike Belger in their uniforms. I will get that scanned in as well.

I've seen a few photos of the lovely church though :).

Would Father Rene' know if there were any journals kept back in the mid to late 1890s? I can't seem to find a definitive death notice for Michael, but if he was killed out of town or overseas, I'm hoping the church might have some recording of the events surrounding his passing, or the year of his death.

Thanks again for your help!

Hi Roxanna,
I haven't had time to go through my photos yet but will try to do so in the week ahead.

The Church in Seward is St Francis Xavier. It used to be that it was the Parish with the church in St John being sort of a mission church. Priest from Seward would go there to say Mass. Now it is the other way around. Have you been there? The confessional was donated by Francis Keenan (my gr grandfather) in memory of his first wife Mary. My dad's funeral was there. Anyway, there is a retired priest that lives in Seward, Fr. Rene' and he is a relative of mine/ours. I think on the Keenan side. but I will double check to be sure. I will call my cousin tomorrow or the day after and see what she knows.

Thanks for the info. We did find this as being the last census showing him alive. He appears to have died sometime after this but before 1900. We're trying to track down what actually happened to him and more information on any siblings and his parents. He remains a mystery to us all.

Thanks for your reply!

Hi Marlene,

From what others in the family have told us, he was not buried in Seward. The two stories we have heard is that he returned to Ireland and was hung and the other was that he was killed in an accident on his way to the St. Louis fair. We can't find a middle name, siblings or parent names. It is a mystery to us all. Do you think the church would have any information on him?

My grandfather was Vernon (Babe) Belger, son of William Patrick. Michael Belger (Bulger) was William's father. We've found the census info on him and several ship manifests listing a Michael Bulger, but can't be sure which was him. I was hoping the Keenan side might have some insight.

Thanks so much for your response. I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Roxanna

I can't be sure and would have to look through my headstone photos but I thought he was buried in the Seward Cemetery. I am pretty sure Sara Jane is although her headstone is very faded if I remember correctly.
Sara Jane and my gr grandfather (Francis) were brother and sister. My grandmother was Mary Ellen Keenan (known as Ella or Elly) and she was married to Henry Anthony Chadd. My dad was John Elmer Chadd.

I will be going back to Kansas later this year and can check in the cemetery. I don't think I ever heard about a hanging but you never know.
Marlene Chadd LeBlanc

Hello Gary,

I hope time has been well for you. You posted the information about Walter John Granger's obituary in March of 2001. Nettie Granger, Walter's sister, was mother to my grandmother, Edith Maude Grindle. My mother, Marjorie A. Grindle was the younger daughter of Edith. I have a picture of Nettie and I also have copies of articles from the Stafford Courier that tell about Nettie and Walter's death from pneumonia in 1906. Since it's been so much time I wonder if you are still researching the line. If you still are I'm sure you've traced Nettie's parents back to England. It's good to find someone else researching. Send me a message sometime. Thanks!

John Wilson

I descend from Aaron Toland to Charles C. and Eva Ellis Cubbage-Toland. My mother was a daughter of John Aaron Toland [son of C.C. and Eva] of St. John, KS. I have proven the Cubbage line back to Gallia County, OH. I have lots of info and pictures I'll share if anyone is interested. I also own the old pump organ that belonged to Eva Cubbage-Toland. You may email me direct drm825@wildblue.net
