I am also looking for information on Harmon WOOD. He was my great-great grandfather from waukon allamakee co. iowa. He was married to Rachel Hanna Matthews in deerfield. portage co. ohio. they had three daughters. Elvira, Adaline and Emaline. He shows up on the early census for alamakee co, ludlow township and then disapears. I cant find any obituary and he is not buried with his wife and children in waukon iowa. I am wondering if we are talking about the same Harmon wood.

Hi,

There is no list because Kansas considers all vital record dates confidential unless you are a member of the family or have direct need for the copy of the birth certificate. For more info go to Kansas Dept Health & Environment, Office Vital Statistics, www.kdheks.gov/vital/index.html and www.kdheks.gov/vital/genealogy.html.

I did find something and clicked on your name to send it to you private since he might still be alive but the link doesn't work. Send me your email and I'll send the info to you.

In the 1987 Lucas (Kansas) history book, the Harshbarger family history is explained. Your family's history is quite fascinating as the Harshbargers are thought to be the first white family to settle in the Lucas area. An updated Lucas history book is currently being published and will be available for purchase by September 2012. Contact information [to purchase the new history book] is available at the Lucas newspaper.

Kansas has both a Larned and a Dorrance, so I am definitely curious. Am I related to anybody here? Or is this just a weird coincidence?

Some time after the Civil War, a relative of mine, C.M. Harshbarger and his uncle John Harshbarger/Harshberger went on a buffalo hunting trip and landed in what is, I am given to understand, Russell Co., KS. They liked it so much, that CM stayed as a squatter, later to be convert to a Civil War Land Grant (or so I am told). John went to Lincoln Co.

The records show that CM and his kin are buried in the cemetery at Lucas, KS and that includes my g-g-g-grandfather and mother, Jacob and Lucinda Kessler Harshbarger.

I am wondering what materials are available about the Harshbargers and Roses locally and the availability of documents to place in a genealogy.

Many thanks.

I am looking for information on Lucy Jane (Dalton) Bland, she was married to Fletcher Travis Bland. She was born in Iowa in 1856 and apparently died in 1945. I believe she is buried in Delhi Cemetery.

In 1913, she married William Wright Townsend in San Diego, California and lived with him in Colorado Springs, Colorado until his death in 1919. She apparently moved back to Osborne County, Kansas and resumed the name Lucy Jane Bland.

I would be greatful for any information, but a death date would be very helpful so I could possibly find an obituary.

1860 - 1890 was there any thing about "the Plymouth development" at Dorrance ? John Conrad Essig and his wife Magdoline and their son, William were found in 1870 record of census, but little else is recorded. I see "Plymouth Road" south of Dorrance; and beatiful cemetary at Dorrance; and a sign on the side a building about " Plymouth " but nothing else.

Sheman McKown, Bunker Hill, Dies
16 Aug 1865 ~ 14 Jan 1941

Sherman McKown, who farmed north of Bunker Hill 35 years, died Tuesday morning about 3 o’clock at the Ellsworth hospital where he had been a patient since last Friday.

Mr. McKown was taken ill with pneumonia New Year’s day. For another complication which developed last week he underwent an operation at the Ellsworth hospital Friday night. He was 75 years old.

In his immediate family Mr. McKown is survived by his wife and three sons, George, of North Carolina; Ross, of Chicago, and Sherman jr., of Bunker Hill.

Mr. and Mrs. McKown observed their 50th wedding anniversary May 9, 1939. Mr. McKown was born in Pennsylvania and came to Kansas in 1886. For several years after his marriage he lived in Hugo and Denver, Colo., returning to the farm north of Bunker Hill where he lived the remainder of his life.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at the Methodist church in Bunker Hill.

Efforts to locate George McKown have been futile the past several days because he is on a construction job some place in North Carolina.

If a mutual interest in this family, please email me at penelopesancestors@hotmail.com.
Penelope
Hi Rhonda of Victoria:

All the Lindsays interred in the Bunker Hill Cemetery are my ancestors! I have taken pictures of their headstones in the past but woe, they are lost by the passage of time! Grandmother Mary Ann Lindsay (wife of William Henry Lindsay)is a Missimer and the Missimers buried there belongs to me as well.

At your leisure, would you be so kind as to once again obtain them for me?

Post word and I'll send you my email address.

I'm forever grateful for volunteers such as you . . .

Bob Lindsay, Denver, Colorado

I photographed the headstones in Bunker Hill, Russell County, KS recently. I have not posted all of them to Find-A-Grave yet, but could look through them to see if I have the ones you want.

findagrave.com has cemetery listings, and many volunteers take photos of headstones for that site.

Rhonda in Victoria, KS

Here is the current public records law. You may have to talk to the Clerk of Court to ensure you've reached someone who is empowered to say "yes." Perhaps in a gentle way, you can mention the "records over 70 years" provision.

5-221
Chapter 45.--PUBLIC RECORDS, DOCUMENTS AND INFORMATION
Article 2.--RECORDS OPEN TO PUBLIC

(f) Notwithstanding the provisions of subsection (a), any public record which has been in existence more than 70 years shall be open for inspection by any person unless disclosure of the record is specifically prohibited or restricted by federal law, state statute or rule of the Kansas supreme court or by a policy adopted pursuant to K.S.A. 72-6214, and amendments thereto.

The entire statute is here:
http://www.kslegislature.org/legsrv-statutes/getStatuteFile....

If you feel you have not been allowed to see a public record, I'd suggest you attempt to resolve the issue through the Kansas Attorney General's office. In a way, you could consider it a consumer issue, and so you can file an online complaint here: http://www.kslegislature.org/legsrv-statutes/getStatuteFile..... The local folks usually do what the attorney general's office says.

Hope this is helpful.
Laura in a balmy NC
Thank you for your reply. May I ask what you mean about Kansas Law changed and when did it change? I thought the Lady that was helping at the Russell, KS. courthouse was just being rude. She acted like she was very put out that I even asked the question. I could understand if I was asking for a recent Marriage application but I wanted one from 1881. I would have understood if she had said that Marriage applications from 1881 no longer existed. She just said that the info was confidential and nothing else.
Thanks Again for your reply,
Debbie

I don't know who you talked to, but Marriage, Divorce, and a million other records are simply Public Records. I was there about 3 years ago and picked up marriage records, Declarations of Intent and Petitions for Naturalization. If you are some distance from Russell, you might see if there is someone who does RAOGK (random acts of Genealogical Kindness) in that area. They are usually wonderfully helpful and should only charge you for their actual costs and mileage.

Jo

Marriage applications

Does anyone know if you can get copies of marriage applications in Russell Co., KS.? I went to Russell, KS. and tried to get a copy of my Great Grandparents marriage application and I was told that I could not have a copy as the info is confidential. I have a copy of their marriage license. My Great Grandfather left for work one day and never came home so I was hoping the marriage application might give me some info on his parents. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!
