Hi! Great to hear from you. Not sure I can be of much help. None of the Hugh Brennans that I am aware of were born in the 1860's. My father, Hugh, was born in 1888/1889. The people that I believe were his grandfather, Hugh, and his Uncle Hugh lived in Kansas and were born in 1834 and 1874, respectively. My father was born in Rock Island, IL to Patrick Brennan who was born about 1861 in Ireland. The other two Hughs were also born in Ireland. Unfortunately, the name Hugh Brennan is all too common. Please let me know if I can help with anything else. Will share what I have. Thanks so much for your reply. Gayle

If you are interested in this I would be happy to email it.

Charlielpowers@yahoo.com
That surname is usually associated with Burgenland ancestry - German/Hungarian.
See http://www.the-burgenland-bunch.org/Surnames/surnames.html

Per the Rawlins County history books, Mathias Kogl was born in St. John Austria-Hungary. His wife Magdalena Hautzinger was born in St. Peter Austria-Hungary. They each arrived separately in the US in the 1890s, lived in Denver, CO for some time and married in 1899 in Denver. They returned to the "old country" for a couple of years, but then came back to Denver and then moved to Rawlins County in 1904.

Also, see this family tree - http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

I went to Sacred Heart grade school with one of the Kogl girls. I have also seen the name randomly in my research in the Czech actapublica archives and wondered. Is the name German or Czech? There were German settlers in Moravia in particular, because there was farm land available in the 1600s.

It seems the Kogls must have come quite a bit later than most of the settlers in Rawlins County. Do you know when they came over? Or even where they came from?

Mary Sramek Levesque

The group is called "Pioneer Families". We now have more than 80 members, with most of us having ancestral roots in northwest Kansas or southwest Nebraska. Membership is by invitation, and there is no cost to join. myfamily.com is associated with ancestry.com, but you do not need a paid subscription to ancestry.com to join the group. If you do have an ancestry.com userid and password, use them to sign in when you join the group. Reply to this message or send me an email and I will send you an invitation.

Gary Nemeth
gnemeth@earthlink.net
Yes, Mary had only 1 child, George Andrew Hopper, my father. He was actually a Justice for the 5th District Court of Appeal in California. He passed away in June, 1981 in Fresno, Ca. He was only 59years old. My mother is Grace L Duvall-Hopper.
My grandmother, Mary, passed away in 1984...I think. At the time she was in a convalescent home in Hanford, Ca. She had been living with my oldest brother's family in Hanford prior to this.
I think I'll start looking for this castle. I'll let you know if I find out anything
Just saw your email. Am just beginning to try and figure out this ancestry thing and it's very confusing!

I don't remember just where the Gieske castle was located ... in Germany, but know that Mr. Herst was trying to move it to his property in California. Last I heard was that he wasn't able to get it over here. I think there might have been a town called Gieske in Germany but am just learning how to search for these things so haven't tracked it down. If you find it, let me know.

Also think that your grandma? was known to me as Aunt Mary. She was a real character! Loved me to death! If it is the same one, her son was George Hopper... who I believe became a Supreme Court judge. Have tried to find information on him but haven't succeeded as yet. If you have info. on him I would also like it.

Just to let you know... I'm Lorrie Otto aka Garcia... mother Loretta Garcia aka Elbert, grandma Louisa Elbert aka Gieske...Aunt Mary's sister.

Betty, you may want to join this group. I have both Kleidosty and Hafner in my family tree, several members research Zwickl
"OUR BURGENLAND ROOTS" RESEARCH GROUP
If you have ancestors from Austria-Hungary, particularly the Burgenland area, who settled in northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska, you might like to join our social network called Our Burgenland Roots. This fun and recently formed group is committed to compiling and sharing genealogical and related records (e.g., photos, family histories and other documents) to the mutual benefit of its members.

If you respond with your name and an e-mail address to maryerushing@yahoo.com, we’ll send to you an invitation to join or go to www.myfamily.com/group/ourburgenlandroots and ask to join.

Ed. note: At my request, Mary shared additional information about the group. It formed initially as an email exchange but, wanting a better way to do this, a member set them up in January as a private family group on MyFamily.com, a sister site to Ancestry.com. There are currently (in mid-February) 32 members who have posted 7 family trees, 16 photo albums (holding 276 photos) and 12 data files, and who also have 58 discussion threads underway. For BB members who have family from this area, it appears to be a great group to join!

Hello Ulrika,

Copies of naturalization records can be obtained from the county courthouse. If I still lived in Kansas, I could do it for you, but I live in Maryland now, and make it back to Kansas a couple of times a year. Perhaps I can find someone still living there to get a copy. Would you want a hard copy mailed to you? The alternative would be a scan to create a pdf or image file that could be emailed to you.

You may also want to check the web page for neighboring Decatur County to see if you find anything. The URL is http://www.skyways.org/genweb/decatur/index.html.

I also informed some others who either live in Rawlins or Decatur counties or have ancestors who lived there of your search for information. Perhaps they can also help you. I will be in touch when I know more.

Gary

http://www.skyways.org/genweb/decatur/index.html

Thanks Gery,
Yes please ask your father. Thank you for the link. I found Caroline's nephew Johan Hagman in the "Index to First Naturalization Records for Rawlins County". He apparently applied for citizenship February 17, 1904 in this county. Do you know how to get a copy of the original application? Perhaps he resided at Caroline's home? I sent an e-mail to the woman who created that webbpage also.
/Ulrika
Hello Ulrika,

I grew up in the Ludell area, as did my father. I know that there were Erikson and Anderson families in the area. I will ask my father, who is 89 yrs old, but it does predate him a little.
Hello!
I´m looking for more information about Caroline Erickson, born in December 1842 as Carolina Josefina Andersdotter in Hidinge parish, county of Orebro, Sweden. She emigrates as Carolina Josefina Hagman (Hagman was her mother's maidenname) on October 29, 1872 from Sweden.

When her niece Anna Andersson emigrated from Sweden in 1899 the shipmanifest says she should go to her "uncle E Erikson" in Ludell, Kansas". When Anna's younger sister Elin Andersson (in the U.S. Ellen Hagman) emigrated in 1905 she went to her "aunt Carolina Ericson in Atwood, Kansas". Anna and Ellen also had a brother named Johan Andersson (later Hagman) who emigrated 1903. When he applied for his citizenship in 1910 he lived in Herndon, Rawlins County, not far from Atwood.

In the U.S. Census 1910, Kansas, Rawlins County, Ludell Township:
Enland (or perhaps Emland or Erland) Erickson, 75, born in Sweden, immigrated to the United States in 1877, wife Caroline, 66, born in Sweden, immigrated to the United States in 1872.
They had been married for 26 years. It was both their second marriage. It says that she had given birth to nine children.

Is it possible to find anything about Caroline's children or anything else about Caroline and her husband?

Best regards,
Ulrika Lundin, Sweden

Gee, you've obviously been doing this for a while. I've only been doing this since earlier this year and I have a LOT to learn. I was still trying to find a ship that arrived from Ireland in 1872 with the right names on the passenger list with no luck. As someone pointed out to me on another board, I have to learn to look at the big picture and not rule things out just because they don't fit perfectly. I had not even considered that 1872 might in fact be 1873. So thank you for sending that info to me. I'll keep it handy and hopefully as time goes on I will be able to confirm it or not.
Thanks once again for your help!

You're welcome.

I did a quick search of immigration data on ancestry and found some Brennan's that came over in Aug 1873 on "City of Chester". Some names that stood out traveling together were :

Pat H. Brennan, age 15
Maria Brennan, age 13
Hugh Brennan, age 12
Honor Brennan, age 39 (Honor=Hanna?)
John Brennan, age 7
James Brennan, age 6
Bessie Brennan, age 5
Kate Brennan, age 4
Owen Brennan, age 3

So maybe this could be an immigration match? Seems close to the correct ages.

Hi. Thanks for responding. Two things stood out as I read your message; one was the mention that the Rawlins Brennans had a connection to Illinois and also because of the fact that my great-aunt Annie also immigrated in 1872, the same year as Lawrence's father, Hugh, did. So there is a real possibility that Annie and Hugh and therefore Patrick (my grandfather) were siblings. I know that this is not proof but I am excited to follow up this lead.
Thanks so much for all the info you sent and the trouble you went to. I really, really appreciate it!

Hi. I appreciate your wanting to help. Unfortunately, I know very little about the Brennans that would have been in Ks. My father, Hugh Brennan, was born in either 1888 or 1889 in Il. He's been dead almost 37 years so I have to rely on what little I can remember him telling me. I remember him mentioning Colby, KS. His father was Patrick Brennan, born about 1861 in Ireland. I remember dad saying that Patrick's father was named Hugh Brennan, also born in Ireland.
Annie, Patrick's sister and my great-aunt, immigrated to the U.S. in 1872 so my great-grandfather, Hugh, would have been in Kansas sometime after that. Hugh's wife I have seen as Hanna (sp.?), also referred to as Nancy (I believe that was a nickname). Her last name was Flannagan or Flannigan-not sure of the spelling. I believe she was from County Monaghan. So Hugh and Hanna would have come to this country in 1872 and settled in Kansas at some point but I have no idea what year. There is also the connection to Il so they may have lived there also. They would have had at least 2 children when they immigrated, Patrick and Annie (real name probably Anna). Being Catholic, there were probably more children.

I realize that this is muddled and probably confusing. Hugh Brennan is a very common Irish name which makes it all the harder. I wish I knew more. Thanks for at least trying.

There is a family story writeup of Lawrence Brennan in the "History of Rawlins County Kansas", published 1988. Here is some information from that family story and and a few census searches to get age data.

Lawrence (born 1913) says his father Hugh came to America from Ireland at age 6. That would be about 1872 since the census shows Hugh born about 1866. Lawrence says his grandfather (also named Hugh) left Illinois to homestead in Achilles. The grandfather (1885 census says "H. Brennan" was born about 1831) became old and in bad health and returned to Illinois, leaving the son Hugh to buy the land and remain in KS. Lawrence's father Hugh married Mary Agnes Ryan of Nebraska in 1902. Lawrence & siblings eventually attended High School in Colby.

So that seems to be a possible match with your line. Perhaps Lawrence's father Hugh (born 1866) is a sibling to your grandfather Patrick (born 1861) and your gr-aunt Annie Coleman (born 1864). So Lawrence's grandfather that came from IL and then went back to IL is your gr-grandfather.

See this google search for matches of "Brennan" on the Rawlins County website: http://www.google.com/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&am...=

Lawrence still lived in Achilles in 1988 when he submitted the story.

Hope that helps. Good luck with your searching.

Hello, I grew up in Rawlins County, Kansas, and still have family there. If you give me more info, I may be able to tell you if the Rawlins's County Brennan family is your family. When would have your family been in Kansas? What were their given names? Approximate years they were born? When was your father born? What was your mothers maiden name? If your family seems to match with the Achilles Brennan family I will send you what info I have.

Brennan Info/Descendants

I am looking for info on the Brennan family. I don't have much to go on. My father's name was Hugh Brennan, born in Rock Island, IL. His parents were Patrick Brennan, born about 1861 in Ireland, and Margaret Buckley, born in England. I believe Patrick's father, my great-grandfather, was Hugh Brennan, born in Ireland, year unknown. I believe his wife was Hanna/Nancy Flanagan(sp.?). Besides Patrick, they had at least one daughter, Annie, who married John Coleman and also lived in Rock Island.

At some point in my childhood, Colby, Kansas was mentioned to me in relation to the Brennans. Searching the census, I found 2 Hugh Brennans. One Hugh Brennan lived in Achilles, Rawlins, KS with a son, Hugh, the other in Wellington, Sumner, KS with a son, Michael.

Any help at all appreciated. Thanks!

I think you are on the right trail. I thought I had found a Rebecca Jane Brooks I had been looking for, but I was on the wrong trail. Both Rebecca's had a father, John Brooks. Thought I had found her, but I found out later I was barking up the wrong tree. I think I still have some info from my errant searches. Thanks for your reply and if I can be of any help to you, I would be glad to assist.

Andy
