(b. 1923 d. 1978) She has several documents and handwritten papers that Paul wrote. I am going through and adding people as fast as I can, and I am not quite finished with them, but nearly done.

Other brothers were in various branches of military, WWII, Phillipines & Normandy (legend has it). Paul was in Salina in mid 1960's, had daughter Zaoda (sp?). Mom traveled back to Ks for her mothers death in 1971-71
I have found 1930 Fed Census that gives father as Willie G., mother Zeola, Zeoda, or Zelma, and Hilda M.
Questions:
1. any one familiar with this group of Peterson's?
2. Did Zeola (Zeoda, Zelma) abandon her family? She was 10yrs younger than Willie G., married @ 16 (??)
3. Is Hilda the mother or Step-mother of Wilma (Paul)?
4.
:D
Thanks for the great information.

I have seen the 1900 census of Kansas. I have also seen the 1895 census of Kansas (he is listed as C J Young). In it there is an Amanda C, who I assume to be the mother of the children. Perhaps she is also the Marie Carlsson listed on the passenger list for Anna Lisa, and Amanda was her middle name. Maybe she was betrothed to Charles/Carl at the time of the passage to America.

Charles/Carl must have moved to Kansas prior to 1890, since the birthplace of Edith is listed as Kansas. I have yet to discover a census from 1890 for Charles.

:)

Charles YOUNG was born Carl Johan CARLSSON on 13 Aug. 1857, the third child of Carl August NILSSON and Anna Lisa JONSDOTTER, at Gässlingsäng, Mörlunda parish, Kalmar lan. (Carl the father died 13 Aug 1868 at age 42 and my g-g-grandfather was a servant on that farm after the early death of his own father.)

(For more on Gässlingsäng, google it...)

There were four children: Christina Fredrika who never married; Maria, my g-g-grandmother; Carl/Charles; and Nils August who came to Burlington IA in 1883.

Carl/Charles left Sweden on 16 May 1884 and Swedish Immigration Index LDS film 1043034 states he came to Cambridge IL for awhile (I don't know how long) before he moved to Kansas.

My notes for Anna Lisa state she "Travelled on Steamship Bothnia from Liverpool and Queenstown, arrived on 3 June 1884 in New York, destination listed as Iowa. With her daughter Christina Carlsson, a servant, also going to Iowa, and her son C.F. Carlson, age 24, a saddl??, who was bound for Illinois. There was a Marie Carlsson, age 20, listed below C.F. who was a "matron" and bound for Illinois, also. Anna Lisa, Christina, and C.F. each had one piece of baggage, and were listed as travelling for a "protracted stay." "

Carl/Charles' sister Maria is my g-g-grandmother, but she would have been 32 years old then, not 20. She and her husband Nels Peter NILSSON/ENGSTROM had already emigrated to the US in 1881 with their son, Axel, my g-grandfather. It would be unlikely that the Marie listed below them is my Maria because A) It would be unlikely that a married woman would go back to Sweden to help the rest of them emigrate -- the other son would have been more likely, and it would be unlikely that the listed age would be that far off. Have not verified but perhaps she is Nils August's wife... She would be unlikely to be listed as "matron" if Charles were her husband, she'd have been listed as "wife" of the person above her.

I don't have any death info on Carl/Charles, but I know it was after 2 Feb 1933 when he was named in Maria's obituary and was living in Marquette.

Information on Christina and Carl from that obit: "She [Maria] leaves behind seven children, 17 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, also a brother, Charles Young of Marquette. It is noteworthy that her sister, Christine Young, who was a couple of years her senior, passed away on March 23, 1930, having reached exactly the same age as Mrs. Engstrom." Christina and Maria were 80 when they died.

Charles is in the 1900 census of Kansas, have you seen that? He's listed as a widower. I have his youngest child as Walter born Feb 1895.

Lisa,
Do you have Charles' birth date and the name of his father?
Do you also know his port of embarcation?

His wife's name was Amanda C. She was born about 1860 in Sweden. It is possible she died between 1895 and 1900.

I do not know where Charles died nor where his mother died. I may find more information after talking to my cousin Marlin. (I just started researching Jan 8).

Edith married Emil Martin, son of Nils Edward Nilsson, (who emigrated from Sweden with his 3 brothers and 2 sisters) in 1925. She passed away 18 Jul 1969 in Marquette, Kansas.

Hi Charles,

What information do you want on Charles Young? I have information on them in Sweden. His sister was my ancestor. He was born Carl Johan but changed his name to Charles. They were born at Gässlingsäng, Mörlunda parish, Kalmar län. Gässlingsäng was the name of the farm. It's now a wildlife refuge or a conservation area. My cousin Denny was there a few years ago.

Charles must have married in Kansas, because he was not married when they came here with my g-g-grandparents Maria and Nels Engstrom. I don't have a whole lot of information on Charles but do on the family in general. Their mother Anna Lisa Jonsdotter also came with them to the US in 1881 at the age of about 65. I don't know where she died. Do you?

-Lisa

I am looking for information on Frances McCann who lived in McPherson, Kansas in the mid to late 1880's. I do not know her husband's given name, but a newspaper account (1889) in another county describes him as a respected merchant in McPherson, probably hardware store.

Mrs. McCann was in an orphanage in Kentucky or Iowa before her marriage but I don't know her maiden name.

I would appreciate any vital information about Mrs. McCann: date of birth (even approximate), where she was born, her maiden name, her husband's full name and vitals as well.

So far, I have had no luck with basic searches of the census. Thanks for any help available.

Would like to communicate with anyone who studies Persinger families from early 1800s Ripley County, Indiana. James Persinger on the 1830 census at Ripley Co, Ind. apparently was alleged to have murdered a man, may have then changed name to James Hardy and went to Newton Co, Texas. But in September 1830, another man, Abraham Persinger married Rachel LAW and was on the 1840 Ripley County, Ind. census. This family moved to Lee Co, Iowa (town of Keokuk) by the late 1840s, then by the 1880s moved to McPherson Co, Kansas. I'm trying to track their children to find descendants to share family history. Thank you, Allan Griffith, Bloomington, Illinois - magrif@verizon.net
