I am a direct descendant of Elias through his son
Elias Grant, and I would love to know more about this part of my family. I recently was made the keeper of the family records (what little we have) which includes some photographs and letters and would love to connect with other family members.

House history - VANCE/HODGSON

I'm trying to investigate the history of my house in Scott township. It was built by Jesse and Rhoda VANCE (fairly certain in 1882) on their farm (they arrived in 1866 - maybe "claimed" the land until the 1868 patent to Jesse). The family lived (and died) there till Rhoda's death in 1928; over time her grandsons sold it (their stakes in the land, eventually the house) by 1947. The next owners appear to be Warren & Bird HODGSON (they or others possibly rented it 1928-47).

I'm not related in any way to these families, but I am interested in their lives (with all due respect, of course!), particularly as they intertwine with the house.

I've done some genealogy research on the neighbors and relations (ELLSWORTH, GEER, LEMEN, HARVEY for the Vances; HUSTED, DONAHUE for the Hodgsons), so that I have decent family trees framed, but there's an unfortunate lack of stories and pictures to make the families (and, therefore, the house) more personal. I've turned up some information on Twin Springs, the long-lost town nearby, but history there seems limited, too.

So, I suppose I'm looking for any personal stories/memories/connections/photos anyone might have about the Vances or Hodgsons, or about the house (it's that big old one at 2400 Rd & K-7 Hwy). I'd also love to see any photos, close-up maps, or firsthand (second... third...) accounts of what Twin Springs was really like.

Thanks. I'm willing to share specifics (plus I have public trees on Ancestry.com) and to do weekend research/legwork in my 'hood (also a member on FindAGrave.com) when I can.

Cheers.

Just thought I'd follow up with some findings in case any one else gets on this same trail. The parents of Nancy Sophire Richey [Prock] 1852-1924 were James Prock Jr. and Jane Keene, both originally from Tennessee. After Mr. Prock died in 1865, Jane married her second husband, James B. Hageman in late 1866. This union ended upon his death roughly three years later. Jane and her younger children appear on the 1870 census in Linn Co. residing in the household of her brother-in-law Samuel Carmack, who was himself a widower following the death of Jane's older sister Nancy. The following summer, Samuel and Jane tied the knot in Linn Co. Once again, poor Jane found herself a widow roughly 4 years later. She wed for a fourth and final time to Samuel Brown in Colorado in 1891. This time she found a man who could outlast her, as she passed away in Douglas Co, Colorado in 1913. Mr. Brown outlived her by 14 years. Thanks once again to Sheryl for helping me connect these dots.

Trever

No, I didn't have either. Late 1866 was a busy time for marriages in this family. The Hagemon union apparently didn't last long, as Jane shows up in the 1870 Fed census as Poock (spelling or transcription error) still in Linn Co. Same story for her son John G. Poock. Then she either married a third time or reverted to her maiden name, because she shows up as Jane Carmack, widowed and living with son John and daughter Emily in El Paso, Co. Colorado in the 1880 Fed Census. I know this is correct because Ebenezer and Nancy et al appear on the same census, but different household. Thanks again! You're helping me connect some major dots today.

Trever

You probably already have Nancy's marriage license, but I am sending it along anyway. The first image, however, is the marriage of Nancy's mother, Mrs. Jane Prock, to a John Hageman, just in case you try to find her later.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kswyanhp/1867prockjanemarr...

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kswyanhp/1866procknancymar...

Prock, Richey Hoping for a lookup

ISO relevant info regarding my 2g-grandparents Ebenezer Sylvester Richey (b. 1845 in Adams Co. IL) and spouse Nancy Sophire/Sofire Prock (b. 1852 in TN or IL or MO or ??). They were married in December of 1866 in Linn Co. KS. Quick math indicates she was not yet 15 at the time...whoa nelly! Their first child, Louisa Jane was born some months later. Shotgun wedding perhaps? I think maybe so. They had three more daughters there before heading west sometime after 1875. Their next child William was born in Colorado in 1878. I know Nancy shows up on at least one KS state census prior to the wedding as Prock and one after as Richey, though I've not been able to view the detailed information from those records. I'm most hopeful of finding any parentage info for Nancy, but any relevant insights would be welcome. If some helpful KS resident would be willing to do a look up for me, I would be most grateful. Thank you in advance.

Trever

I am not related to you, nor to the Lipscomb family, but I can tell you that during the timeframe when McDonald County, Missouri, was becoming well into its own, since it was located geographically near the Oklahoma state's new political boundaries where oil had just been discovered, that's when many people declared their Native Indian blood. It was within the 1930 and 1940s that much was done within the state of Oklahoma, but that time just when the discovery of oil came into being, when the area of McDonald County, Missouri began to thrive, was when alot began to come out and there was a national recogntion concerning the Native Indian tribes and its blood relationship with those who wanted to acknowledge it. Here also are some references which you librarian can help you will to find the information you are seeking;
Missouri WPA ISBN 1-883982-23-5

and

"Indians & Archaeology of Missouri" by Carol H. and Eleanor F. Chapman ISBN# 0-8262-0401-5
The American Indian Quarterly praised this book highly.

Rhonda Warmack Houston
(rfhouston@mindspring.com)

It was evidently against the law in Kansas for first cousins to marry. From an 1898 marriage affidavit:

And that the said _____________ and ______________ are not related to each other in the degrees prohibited by law, to wit: Parent and child, grandparent and grandchild of any degree, brother and sister of either one-half or whole blood, uncle and niece, aunt and nephew, or first cousins; and that there exists no legal impediment to said marriage.
Is anyone aware of any state or county law prohibiting the marriage between first cousins?

My 2nd great-grandparents hopped the border from Linn Co. into Bates Co., Missouri and married in 1891. They were first cousins, and Catholic.

I'm not sure if it was a church rule, a government (state, local, or otherwise) rule, or if there was some other reason they went to Missouri to marry.

I have contacted the Archdiocese in Kansas City with the same question, but have not received a response yet.

Any insight is appreciated.
Hi Esther..it is good to hear from you again. We corrersponded last year re Fern Augusta Cox..daughter of Ida Alice Kelsey. You were sick at the time. I was able to get Vol II of the Miami Family stories..it relates my great grandfather Ward Jackson Carpenter exclaiming "by Jingo' when they denied the naming of the town with the original name. Ward was general store/postmaster. I know my grandmother SWORE he named the town and had it put in her obit. Hope you are feeling better? I am still following the Kelseys but did find the death of Willaim Wallce Kelsey, thanks to Alice Widner. Marcia Schuley

Linn Valley was never part of the city of La Cygne. My husbands grandfather Fred Cox owned the 400 acres farm later to become the northeast corner of the Linn Valley Lake development and later became a City of the 3rd class. The north edge of Linn Valley is the Miami county line. Jingo is about one mile north of the Miami county line on Jingo road which was old 69 highway before the new 4 lane highway was built about 1 mile east.
The story goes that a bunch of old timers were setting around the wood stove at the grocery store trying to find a name for the town since the first name was already taken. One old fellow lost his balance as he sat back in his chair and when he got his balance back he said BY JINGO THAT WAS A CLOSE ONE. They all agreed Jingo was a good name. That is story I have heard all my life from the old timers that used to live around there.

Hello; i have a Nolan Bunch, who died in a horrific train accident in Chattanooga TN in 1914. his father was M A BUNCH; martin, aka Mort Bunch, married to Katie McCoy Bunch.
They had several children. Mort, Nolan and Floyd all died in the train accident. They were on the tracks on Xmas eve walking from GA border over to TN to family on Xmas eve. they were hit. Mort was holding Nolan. Katie then lost Floyd the next following week. they also had James Odus Bunch, eugenia aka genie bunch and Margaret aka Maggie mae bunch. if any of these names or this story sound familiar please let me know! My mother is the Daughter of James Odus Bunch. We know very little about M A Bunch Martin A aka Mort or Morty Bunch. He was born in TN, Katie in AL. The kids were born in GA and AL. He was a miner in the Oar mines from what I've found. This bunch line of his has been particularly difficult to trace, since he died in 1914.

thank you for any help!
Kathleen Streitenberger-Rupert

Yes, David Dinwiddie could have been referring to Hells Bend - I hadn't thought about that. Joe Mann & his brother had a little shop there in the late 40s or early 50s. They were snake hunters, especially hunted poisonous snakes to sell, & had displays of preserved snakes in jars in their little building. At the entrance door was a box with a sign saying something like "See baby rattlers inside" & if you lifted the lid, you saw human baby rattles. The Manns often hunted snakes on our property NW of LaCygne. They'd sometimes bring their gunny-sack bags of snakes to the house to show us a really big one. They didn't get them all - there are still plenty of snakes along the river bluffs.

Don't know if you are still interested in this area but I believe it's an area north and west of La Cygne referred to as "Hell's Bend". Althought several of the older cabins are no longer there.
