I worked tornado relief in Greensburg during May and spent considerable time clearing debris brick by brick from the Kiowa County Historical Society Museum. Many items were recovered. The building was a total loss. They also lost all of the cabinets, shelves, display cases etc. If you are interested in helping, donations can be made to the museum, as well as the city in general.

The Big Well museum and gift shop was also destroyed, as was Hunter Drug.

http://skyways.lib.ks.us/towns/Greensburg/index.html

http://skyways.lib.ks.us/counties/KW/

There was an article written about her in the Wichita Eagle by Forrest Hintz called "Nation's First Woman Sheriff was Greenburg's Mabel Chase". I have a copy of the article but I don't know when it was written. Carrie Foree was the person interviewed and she was my husband's great grandmother.

Would anyone know if it is possible or how to obtain the court record of a murder trial held in Greensburg, Kiowa Co, KS in October 1908? I am trying to find the outcome of the following news article since I am researching related families:

The Chillicothe Constitution, Chillicothe, MO, Tuesday, October 13, 1908, Pg 4, Col 6
KANSAS MILITIA ORDERED OUT TO GUARD PRISONER // Topeka, Oct. 12. -- In response to an emergency call from Sheriff C. A. Stevenson of Kiowa county, Governor Hoch late tonight ordered out a detachment of the national guard to protect Samuel Bitler, whose trial on the charge of murdering Mrs. Rosenberger last spring will commence tomorrow in the district court in Greensburg, Kas. // Colonel P. M. Hoisington was detailed to take charge of the squad and will call out whatever part of the Hutchison company he thinks is needed for a guard. Bitler has been confined in the Hutchinson jail since his arrest. The prisoner and guard will go to Greensburg early tomorrow morning. // Bitler was arrested shortly after the murder of Mrs. Rosenberger, a farmer's wife, whose body was found in a pasture not far from home, with three bullets in it. No incentive for the crime was discovered, but Bitler, it is claimed, had been riding in a buggy with Mrs. Rosenberger the afternoon before the murder, leading his own horse. // A broken hoof of the horse served as a clue to the officers in tracing the path taken. Since Bitler's arrest, and while he was confined in the Hutchison jail, he was married. Threats of violence caused Sheriff Stevenson to call for the special guard.

Could someone please answer a question for me?

Were (are) there any Indian Reservations in Kiowa County, Kansas?

An old letter from one of our relatives says that he stayed at an Indian Reservation in Kiowa, Co. Kansas when he was very young. He was b. 1894, so I'm thinking it had to be in the early 1900.

I have tried to find a reservation in Kiowa, County but just keep getting confused.

I would so very much appreciate any help you can give me.
I found a note in my Grandmother's bible that lists "cousin Mary Button - Kiowa, Kansas, Luella Button." Does anyone have any information?
My grandmother was Harriet Genevieve Button Grabill, born 1896, Kalamazoo, MI. Her father was Harry Jay Button, born New York. I do not have any siblings for him so don't know how these could be here "cousins".

I am researching the Carlile, Miller, Anderson, and Starkey Families who lived in and around Wellsford, Kansas shortly before the turn of the last century (1900). My grandfather, C. E. Anderson owned the general store in Wellsford for many years. I would appreciate anyone with information or a relationship to any of the above named families contacting me. Thank you very much.

Pics - Isaac Young Family/ KY - KS 1850-1930

I would like to contact Isaac YOUNG family descendants regarding the confirmation of some pictures I have. Isaac and Martha Dowell Young were born in Kentucky and married in Crittenden Co., KY (Isaac B. 1854/Martha B. 1859). Most of their children were born there. Between 1884 and 1886 the family moved to Wellsford Twp., Kiowa Co., Kansas, although one son, Orville was born in KY in Sep of 1889.

Isaac and Martha had 7 children according to census records:

Samuel R. 1877
James H. 1880
Walter Albert 1882
Zepha A. 1884
Frances (Fannie) A. 1886
Orville L. 1889
Noble Alfred 1894

Frances and Noble were born in KS, all of the others in KY.

Samuel lived in Reno Co. KS for a time.
James appears to have lived in Fowler Twp., Meade Co., KS from about age 20 until his death in 1967.
Walter Albert lived in Wichita, Sedgwick Co., KS during 1920/1930
Zepha was the City Treasure of Hutchinson, KS according to the 1930 census, but died in CA
Frances married John W. Starkey and lived in Hutchinson, Reno, KS before the mid 1930's.
Orville lived in Haviland, Kiowa, KS in 1930 and was a tractor dealer.
Noble lived in Jackson Co., MO in 1920 and died in CA 1980.

If anyone has any information on this family, or knows of a researcher for this line of YOUNG or DOWELL families, I have several pictures of the family that I would be happy to share, but need some confirmation as to who is who in the pictures. I think I have at least two pictures of Isaac and Martha Young and all of the children together at the family farm in Wellsford, Kiowa, Kansas.

Thank you very much.

Looking for History on the Burnett Family.

Hello to everyone,

I came across this site just not so long ago during a search for a bit of my own family history.

I am looking for information about the Ireland and the Burnett Families. My Father is the late Darrell Burnett. He passed away January 31st. I wasn't given much of an opportunity over the years to ask my Father about our family history- but given I've noticed quite a few inquiries with in this board about family members- That I thought I would give this place a chance and see what I could come up with. The only insight I have is that in which I was given as a child.

Wesly and Ruth Ireland were my Great Grandparents- my Grandmother's Parents- and that's about all that I have in knowledge other than the next set of grandparents down the line. The only other thing I know is that my Great Grandparents Lived in Mullenville right across the street from my Father's parents and that I had 10 happy years of knowing them both before time managed to change my own life.

If anyone has any insight- I would be very grateful.

Melissa.
