Dear Gayl, My name is Melanie McCoy. I grew up in Coldwater, Kansas, knew Nig Atteberry & the ranch, and his daughter is one of my sister's best friends from high school. We're trying to locate her so you guys can get in touch. You and I may also be related. My great Aunt & Uncle were jack & Fannie Ryan, who lived in Coldwater from 1915 on thru 1930 or 1940. They moved up there from the Oklahoma Panhandle. I've been trying to connect your Dad Bill Ryan to my bunch of Ryans. No luck yet, but getting closer. Any help you could offer in that regard would be greatly appreciated.
Melanie McCoy
buffalowindwoman@yahoo.com

Looking for info on Lucile Coleman or a Coleman family in the Comanche county area around 1927. I do not find any Coleman's in the county on any census record. Lucile was born around 1907. I find Lucile Foree of the right age and time but need to know if she came to Kansas City around 1927. Thanks.

Renee,
I see you are new to posting on the Rootsweb message boards. When you post, post the criteria information, such as the date of birth (always helpful), place of birth, etc. You did identify his full name and the names of the parents. That was enough for me to find your family tree. When you post, post the link to your person on your tree:

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/44883344/person/6271681232?ss...=

That helps you prevent being asked questions by those that can't find things, also prevents you from receiving information you already have.

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1940 is the last available census at this time.

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

Have you searched the Dawes Rolls????

Need DOB's + birthplaces for John Pinkeny, and Hamilton G Purcell

WHERE was George W Purcell born?????

This is part of your problem -

General Information – 1870 census
Four new states were added to the Union between 1860 and 1870 for a total of 37 states: Kansas, West Virginia, Nevada and Nebraska. In addition, six new territories were created: Dakota Territory, Colorado Territory, Arizona Territory, Idaho Territory, Montana Territory and Wyoming Territory. The Unorganized Territory, unofficially called the "Indian Territory" was not enumerated for non-Indians in 1870.

General Information – 1880 census
Colorado was the only state admitted to the Union between 1870 and 1880, bringing the total to 38 states. Eight territories were enumerated: Arizona, Dakota, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Washington and Wyoming territories. Unorganized Alaska was enumerated, but the "Indian Territory" was not enumerated for non-Indians. Unlike any previous censuses, after microfilming, the original 1880 census schedules for several states were transferred from the National Archives to various state archives, state libraries, or universities libraries. Only the original 1880 schedules for Pennsylvania remain at the National Archives. Several originals were later transferred to the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C.
Native American ties to the Purcell surname.

I am trying to find a person who was researching the Native American ties to the Purcell family some years ago. A man visited my grandmother, Blanche McCormick Purcell, (now deceased),when she lived on Summerbell Avenue in Elon, NC. He was interviewing her for a book he was writing and told her he would see that she got a copy of the book when it was finished. She later moved to Virginia where she died. I would love to know the name of the book so that I might be able to purchase it. He told her the name of the tribe we were related to but she couldn't remember. Please help if you have any information.

It will take several months to transcribe all the states.

You need to supply a time period.

You need to supply 1st names + DOB's + birthplaces + race for all family members.

Hi Sis,
I have everything from what came across from Southern Germany in 1700's, our family split several hundred times after that. Jennie and I know of 3 split relative wings, one that came from Daniel D. Miller "birth dated 1778" moved to Oregan. David Miller's wing "birth dated 1779" is in Ohio. Willard Fenton-Miller's Wife is from the Daniel D. Miller from Oregan. We all stem from one guy who left Germany and wed his second wife in Lebonon Co., PA. His name was Christian Miller 1st, he was born "and I quote this from an old print off from a geneology website" in Wurtenberg, Bavaria, Germany ABT 1700 they never state a Death.
The Printing Emporium in Goshen Indiana printed the book, they may be able to help you further.

Keep the Sun out of your eyes.

McBride, Mamie I (Ida Mae) and Guy (Gordon) D

Mamie is my gr-gr grandmother and Guy is her brother. Mamie was born Apr 1890 in Greenwich KS and Guy was born Jul 1892 in Joplin MO. The family story is that their parents were killed sometime between Aug 1892 and Jun 1900. They are living with their grandmother, Anna L. McBride (widow) of deceased Robert Dean McBride in 1900 in Coldwater. Also their mother is said to be a full blood Choctaw indian. We have not been able to verify this story. Anna & Robert had 5 children (that we know of) and all were living in 1900 and all were born in Ohio. They are: Berry R. b: 1871; Miller R. b: 1874; George W. b: 1877; Frank W. b: 1878; and Anna May b: 1882. I am hoping someone might know if the story is true or have a lead on who Mamie & Guy's parents were. The SSAN death index for Mamie indicates her mother's maiden name was Gallimor(e) - but I cannot verify this.

looking for homestead burial at Rancho Grande

I am looking for a very old homestead burial. The place was called Rancho Grande, a large dugout built between 1875 and 1878 to serve as a ranch home place, reportedly located near the mouth of the Red Fork Creek and close to the Jug Mott Creek. I believe the family that lived there were the Colcords, and the burial was probably in the latter half of 1883.
Can anyone help me with finding the exact location of the dugout and/or perhaps tell me whether there is any evidence remaining of early burials?
Thank you.

Hi, I hope someone may recognize the surname Peebles. Jerome Peebles is/was my maternal grandfather and was graduated from Protection High School in 1916. My mom has a 1916 yearbook with a picture of him in his US Navy enlisted man's uniform. My best guess is that he settled in New London CT after WWI ended, as he married and had four children there between 1920 and 1930. Without going into too much detail, he found himself back in the Plains states by 1950 and died in Denver in 1985. He had a younger brother Duane, and possibly a younger sister Maude as well (her married name was Meeker).

I'd like to know if there are any other Peebles family members still in Comanche County who I might contact, and hope someone will be willing to help me with information if that's the case. Thanks so much in advance for any help offered.

Thanks, and regards to all -
Frank J. Alexander
Fort Myers FL

Interesting, I had not heard that discussed before. Would that then mean the native american bloodline comes from the Teague connection as I am pretty sure that the Lynch line back from their father (George W) and grandfather (Andrew, an ancestor of mine)does not show the DNA characteristics of Native American heritage. My haplogroup is from Western Europe origin and has been show to match the Lynches who resided in Claiborne County TN and later in Benton County AR.

Stephen Lynch

Looking for obits...

Hello everyone... I am in need of a couple of obits. Not sure how to obtain them. Help and guidance would be great.

Rebecca Steidley CUMPTON died 20 Apr 1930 in Protection. Her husband, J.A. CUMPTON, died in Aug 1932 and his obit is listed on the Comanche Co. website. Also need one for their son, Jerry P. Cumpton. He died in 1935 (according to his tombstone). A daughter of J.A. and Rebecca, Goldie CUMPTON ALEXANDER, died 16 Jan 1913. She was living in Oklahoma but her obit might also be in the Comanche area.

Any help receiving Rebecca, Jerry, and Goldie's obits would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Juls

Gordon Ferrin

I was overwhelmed to find some new information on my "Grampa", Gordon Lyle Ferrin of Pratt, Kansas born 1914.
Grampa adopted us(me&2 sisters)neighborchildren as grandchildren in 1980 in orange co., Ca. He had been retired from teaching and counseling in the California School . Gertrude "Jane" Ferrin, his wife, was never able to have children, and unfortunately became ill and invalid at a fairly young age . Of course, I met Jane late in her life, and Grampa had cared for her independently for over 20 years.
Grampa was an exceptional man, intelligent, kind and wise beyond his elderly years. Mine and Grampas bond was so special, that we grew to be my best friends, and we were inseparable for the 18 years!! I am honored to call him my Grampa, although no blood relation, he practically raised me and was/IS the single most important influence in my life!!
Grampa instilled all of the ideals, morals and values of the old ways and shared his wisdom with me until the day that he died, in 1997. I would love to learn anything else about Gordon Ferrin from people who knew him, or have reasearched family history. I heard stories from his life for many years, and I never grew old of them, and now I yearn to know any more stories or tidbits that I can learn!
I can answer questions as well, to the best of my knowledge about him, etc. The Ferrins are a great and respected name in my book! I also have some pictures some family might be interested in getting copied! AND one day I would like to go to Pratt, Kansas.
Jennifer Rhines age 35 2009

Hi Angie;

My name is Roger Loesch. I lived in Coldwater, and worked for Bob Dunn for almost ten years. Bobs got a younger brother Roger. Their parents are Ed and Pat Dunn. I know/knew the family well. I just saw Bob on the 4th of July 2009. His number is 620-582-2692. He is a really great guy, as is the whole family. Hope this helps in anyway. If you are related to them you must be a heck of a gal as the whole family is top notch. Sincerely, Roger

Charles Wesley Fausett: Obituary and other Information

Greetings,
I am hoping that someone in or around the Wilmore area would be willing to lend me a hand. I am wanting a copy of my great grandfather's obituary as well as a photo of his tombstone. He is buried in the Wilmore/Powell Township Cemetery; Row 7, Lot 206 beside/near Annie and Jesse Wade. Granddad's information is as follows: Born Jan. 26, 1868,
Noblesville, Hamilton County, Indiana. Died Oct. 13, 1931, Wilmore, Comanche County, Kansas.

Family story has it that both great granddad and great-great granddad were railroad workers and that they went to Wilmore from Oklahoma to work on the railroad. How true is this information? Is there a railroad in or around Wilmore and if so, when was it put in? Are there any photos of or lists of railroad workers?

Thanks ever so much for all your efforts and assistance, they are greatly appreciated.

Have a great day!
Kittye Williams

Re: Comanche County History, A - F

I recently found that Charles A. Foster died in Comanche County Kansas at his daughter's home, Vinna R. Foster Osborne on January 29, 1917.
Charles was married to Mary E. Crockett, and they had five children, four lived to adulthood.
I have not been able to find out the marriage dates of these children, and the names of the spouses.
I know that Vinna married Harry L. Osborne, but not when; Helen had not married at the time of her father's death in 1917. Charles Clyde Foster married a woman named Erma; and Hobart Lee Foster married a woman named Mary.
Does anyone know the marriage dates and names of these spouses?
These children were probably born in Clark County Kansas, and their parents moved to Comanche County Kansas about 1909, eight years before Charles death in 1917. The parents, Charles & Mary Foster, Clyde Foster and Vinna Foster Osborne & Harry Osborne are buried in Protection Cemtery.
Also, does any one know how many children Clyde, Lee, Vinna and Helen had?
A Crockett descendant, Karen Walker
