1832.. Archibald is born in Berwickshire, Scotland
1834.. Mary Nellist is born in Canada.
1836.. Alamo massacre... Texas becomes a republic.
1836.. The John and Helen Johnston family migrates from Scotland to Canada. A child dies at sea, and John, the father, dies within the first year after arrival. Helen fends for herself, raising her children alone, as she does not remarry.
1841.. Col John C. Fremont begins his expeditions of the West. He becomes a figure akin to current day astronauts or Charles Lindbergh in our century. The number of placenames named after him in the west, from parks to schools, to mountains to streets rivals Washington's. He figured prominently in the taking of California from the Mexicans during the Mexican-American war and tales of his exploits made a media hit out of an obscure mountain man and guide, named Kit Carson.
1846.. Polk annexes Texas, starting The Mexican-American War where the United States "appropriated"the southwestern states, from Texas to California. The Mexicans objected to President Polk annexing Texas, and ended up losing California and more.
1857.. Archibald Johnston marries Mary Nellist in Canada. Archibald is 25. Three children will be born to them in the next few years, before the family moves to the United States.
1860.. Civil War begins
1865.. Civil War ends
1865-66.. Family migrates to United States
1866.. Anna is born in Wheatland, Mercer, Pennsylvania.
1869.. (Approximate) Archibald and Mary (Nellist) Johnston, with four children, move to Brazil, Indiana. Archibald is 34. The remainder of their children are born here. (Ella Jeanette's obituary says they was born in Canada in 1864 and the family moved to the US when she was two.)

18xx.. Archibald and Mary (Nellist) Johnston and family move to Danville area of Vermilion County, Illinois.
1881.. The Archibald and Mary (Nellist) Johnston family move to Cloud County, Kansas. This first farm was in the Huscher neighborhood southeast of Concordia. He is 49.
1881.. Gunfight at the OK Corral in Tombtone, AZ
1881.. Billy the Kid killed by Sherriff Pat Garrett at age 21
1882.. Jesse James is shot in the back in St Joseph, MO, approximately 200 miles due east of where the Johnston's are in Cloud County, KS
1882.. Dodge City reaches its climax as the "Cowboy Capital" of the West.
1882.. Archibald and Mary (Nellist) Johnston family move to 480 acres in Arion Township, southwest of Concordia.
1907.. Mary (Nellist) Johnston dies at age 73 in Concordia, Kansas.
1908.. Henry Ford delivers his first Model T. There are approximately 450 companies producing automobiles.
1910.. Archibald Johnston dies at age 78 in Concordia, Kansas.
They had nine children, eight surviving to adulthood. A few years ago, they had 768 descendants (including spouses).
