The Iowa Genweb project (http://www.iagenweb.org/census/colinks.htm) has an ongoing project to put these documents online, although most counties are unfinished at present.

Some counties (either thru iagenweb or local gensoc's) have data online. You should check both for your county of interest. If not online, you might get someone to do a lookup by email, if your inquiry is very specific.

And... Ancestry.com has has searchable online transcriptions available (for a subscription fee) at http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/census/main.htm.
Hint: Even if you are not a subscriber, you can see how many hits you get (I think it's by using "search the wider index") before buying.
