"D'oh!" Homer's mind raced ahead in an attempt to grasp the magnitude of the problem. "W h a a a t???"
I soon learned that Homer, my buffoonish and altogether incompetent research assistant, had reached this conclusion by searching the catalog that is online at
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/fhlcatalog/ where, his notes told me, he found no reference to the Iowa State Census.
Rechecking his work (which I often have to do) I found that he had errored by placing all of his faith in the PLACE search. When he searched for "GRUNDY", partof "IOWA" he did not see a CENSUS entry. Not remembering, as I do, the quirky nature of this index and its search engine, he considered the job done.
Using your results, by searching for 1021471 under FILM/FICHE, I quickly proved to Homer that there is indeed an entry for the 1885 Iowa State Census for Grundy County.
"Well how was I SUPPOSED to find it?" he persisted (something unusual for him). He showed me that neither the TITLE or SUBJECT search could be used to turned up results for Grundy County.
Ummm, I can't figure it out. The only way I can find the entry is with the FILM number. But Dina knows. Maybe she will tell us. I'll get back to you, Homer.
