PH Wilcher's second wife Susannah was a Spencer. Her first husband James M. Meadows, had died in 1870. My interest is in all the Meadows descendants, which includes all the Wilcher family descended from Josiah(1795-1883) and Sarah (Meadows) Wilcher. Am currently working on the siblings of PH Wilcher, who are:Elizabeth, Rebecca A., John E., Ellen C., Jane, Sarah Jane, Thomas K., Mary, and Margaret. Where are they? jeff.simmons5@comcast.net

I am looking for information on James Reed and Lavina Stutts (Slutz). On my GG Grandmother's (Georgie Ella Reed Crosby) marriage cert it says her birth parents were James and Lavina Reed, she was adopted by LL & Sarah Crosby.
Georgie was born Feb 4 1848,
I know James and Lavina were not married at that time. Lavina would have been about 16 years old in 1848, so I am thinking for her to know about James and Lavina, her adopted family and birth family must have known each other.
If you have any information, I would appreciate it.

Greetings distant cousin..

I am traveling to Decorah tomorrow to collect info and pics of the Stratton/Miller families. Cynthia and Lydia Stratton had a younger sister, Clara B. Stratton, married Russell M. Webb. She died in her early 20's from complications childbirth, of my great grand mother ( Grace Webb), in Decorah 1870. Cynthia Stratton Miller died in Decorah in 1918 and is buried in Phelps Cemetery.

Well for starters NZ, Burlington Ia is in Des Moines county. Iowa began requiring the recording of vital records in 1880 but it was not strictly complied with 'til much, much later. Your chances of finding a baptismal record are better but first you have to find the individual on census records to determine where the event might have occurred. If you don't have access to census records, the 1880 census indexes & transcripts are free on-line at www.familysearch.org. Keep in mind that your and census records may not agree, but this is common in genealogy research. Dick

I've been looking for Vaney Partin or Mary Cleghorn who may have given birth to Lillian Florence Maynard, 1880, Baxter, Arkansas. Mary Cleghorn passed away in 1881 in Arkansas. I found a Mary Jane Cleghorn b. 1856 in Missouri, everything fits if I'm reading this 1880 census (mentioned below) right.

I've found this census from 1880, in Baxter, Arkansas (attached), and wondered if it was James William Maynard, Mary Maynard, and baby Lillian Maynard, it has Mary (from Missouri), listed as their mother. The head of household doesn't make sense, but they are living right next door Sam Maynard's three brothers; John W. Maynard, wife Frances, brothers John M Maynard and Benjamin Franklin Maynard.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Denise

I am the great grandaughter of Lydia Belle Shirts. I have some information about her and descendants and a few photos. One is her with Robert and Harris when she was probably about 5. She had a short life, dying shortly after the birth of her 3rd child Nellie from complications. We think she was 24 when she died. She married my great grandfather John Alexander Stewart june 20,1907. Their first child was Robert George, second was my grandfather Clyde Edward and the baby was Nellie, who was sent to live with the Buzzard side of Lydia's family and was adopted by them but I know nothing of that side of the family so was thrilled to stumble on your info. Hope you are still active at this e me as soon as you can Linda Jones

Thank you for your reply. My husband and his youner brother Dick were taken from Marjorie Hopkins and brought to California in 1942. If your father is their half brother he would be younger probably in his sixties. Ask him if he was ever told of older half brothers, or even possibly a half sister. I don't know for sure but I think somewhere we were told that her name might possibly be Mary Ann. My husbands brother might possibly have looked your father up back in the eighties when he was visiting Iowa and was first informed of this half brother. I think at that time the half brother had moved to another stte. I have no other information to pass on, but if it appears that possibly your father and my husband are related, I know that my husband would be delighted to know this. Thank you for your replay, and really do hope to hear back. sincerely Carol Wagner bobncar@earthlink.net

Hi Jocelyn, Long time resident of does not mean born there. You forgot to include a nativity for William. Also, find your people on all available census records first. It gives you more data to work with and also provides data that may help or hinder your research. The 1880 census indexes & transcrips are free on-line at www.familysearch.org. Go there and you will find 3 yr old Willie Clinton with his parents & sibling in Montgomery co, Ia. The 1925 Ia state census indicates Wm. Clinton's parents were Pat and Maggie (Mc Laughlin) Clinton. Good luck in your research. Dick

You mentioned James Archibald McNair having sons. Were they "ARCHIBALD JAMES", Robert & David (3 sons)? Or, were they Archibald, James, Robert & David (4 sons)? Do you have any documentation of this?

These are all repeated names in the McNair family & I'm trying to sort them out. Tradition has it that there were 3 McNair brothers who came here originally, but I'm not so sure. Still working on that.

my great-grandmother's brother, Frederich Severin Bach was born in Thisted, Denmark on Oct. 10, 1852.

He is listed in the Danish archives as leaving Denmark for Atlantic, Iowa at the age of 34 in 1887 on board the ship called Hekla. I cannot find any evidence of him actually arriving that would have been at Castle Garden in New York, I assume.

If you can look up in the census or some other place to help me find my ancestor that would be great.

Sincerely,
Birgit Mariane Hulgaard Cancilla

His wife was Mary Jane Hitch d 3/17/1926 Oelwein. ..."

Paul, I've just been researching this family this past week. J.P. MONNAHAN's civil war pension card is unfortunately difficult to read, and I had thought it indicated he died in 1895, but now that I look at it, it is probably 1875; that explains why he isn't with the family in 1880 census. I note that in the 1885 IA State Census, Mary J. is listed as widowed.

Do you have an obit or other proof of Mary J.'s death in 1926? I had thought the following index entry might be for her, but I haven't yet been able to find a corresponding obit in the Oelwein paper around that time:

Iowa Cemetery Records
Name: M. J. Monnahan
Death Date: 12 Oct 1933
Page #: 131
Cemetery: Oakdale
Town: Oelwein
Level Info: Grave Records of Fayette County, Iowa

I have quite a few news items regarding the Michael (b1873) line, including his obituary (1948), and would be glad to share these with you if you're interested.

Mary
