Ira then dies 23 Nov 1884 and is buried in Buckingham Cemetery with his first wife and many of his family. However, there is no listing thus far for his second wife Fanny.

I am trying to find out where she might or is buried.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Kelly

I am very confused about the actual location of the Amity or Grant Twp Cemetery, at Reinbeck, IA. Which county is it in - Grundy or Tama. I see on a map that Reinbeck is in Grundy, but on the Web it says it is in Tama County. Can anyone tell me where this cemetery really is and how to get to it?
Thanks
Margaret

I am hoping someone can help me find a birth record. My great grandfather, James Liston Emerson, was born in Buckingham or Perry Township IA April 16, 1858. His father, James Otis Emerson moved the family from NH to IA sometime before 1858. The family had moved to MA by 1870 (census). There is a J O Emerson who shows up in the IA census in 1860 but the ages of his children are 10 years more than they should be, even though the initials used in the census are correct for all members of the family. In the 1870 census the children show up in MA with the same ages as in the 1860 census. At any rate...I would like to have an actual birth record if possible. The mother's name was Elvira Lydia.
Thanks, Leslie

She was born in 1918, she is of Native American lineage, as we know it, her mother's name may have been Sarah (Sara) Turner, we are not sure. She was supposed to go live with a family, but we are not sure the name, the head of the household was supposed to be a doctor, and some remember him going by Doc Evans, there is a Dr Evans registered as a Cherokee in the Dawes Registrar- not sure if this is the right one or not. They did live in Tama and then moved at some point to Texas County Missouri, the township was called Roubidoux, due to it being close to teh Roubidoux River. They are both buried there. If anyone has anything on this, Please, please contact me. You may contact me directly at my email address: for_emailjunkie@yahoo.com

Thanks so very much!!!
Janell Milton

obit: Mrs. C. B. COOK d. 1925

This was on the same page as an obit I ordered.

Dysart Reporter
10 September 1925

VINTON LADY MURDERED MONDAY NIGHT AT TEN
Mrs. C.B. COOK, well known Vinton resident was shot and killed in her home there about ten o’clock Monday night of this week. The shot was fired by some unknown person from outside the house, the bullet going through the window striking the lady in the arm and entering her body just below her heart. Her mother, Mrs. E. UNDERWOOD, was upstairs, heard the shot and her daughter’s screams and rushed to her assistance, but Mrs. COOK passed away about an hour later without being able to give any information that would enlighten the officials.
Mrs. COOK was president of the Benton County W.C.T.U. and had been very active in the organization. She had been prominent in anti-liquor activities and it has been suggested that the fatal shot was probably fired by a bootlegger or rum runner. Clifford B. COOK, the husband who had been in Sioux City, arrived in Vinton Tuesday afternoon and is grief stricken over the tragedy. Mrs. COOK was about 49 years of age.
A corner’s inquest was held Tuesday and Wednesday, but details have not been made public. The State is not offering a $500 reward, and state officials have arrived at Vinton, and are assisting the local authorities in their search for the murderer. This is one of the most astrociuos [atrocious] crimes in the history of this section of the state, and if the murderer is captured he should be given the limit and then some if necessary.
obit: Roy DAVIS - d. 1940, Iowa

When I asked a Tama Library for an obit on my ancestor, this one was on the same page. I hope it helps someone.

Dysart Reporter – July 18, 1940

Roy DAVIS of Decatur City Dies Instantly
Death claimed its second victim on the highways of Tama county Monday night about 11 o’clock, when Roy W. DAVIS, 44, of Decatur City was instantly killed when his truck overturned on the graveled road two miles east of LeGrand near the Coffin quarry.
DAVIS is believed to have fallen asleep at the wheel of his truck. According to Tama and Marshall county officers who investigated the accident, the truck swerved off the graveled road, plunged into a ditch and overturned.
Stump Causes Death
DAVIS was thrown clear of the truck but a tree stump in the ditch is believed to be the direct cause of his death. When he was tossed from the cab of the truck he fell with his head lying on the stump. The rolling truck caught his head against the stump and he was instantly killed.
Had it not been for the stump it is likely that DAVIS would have escaped with only slight injuries. It was necessary to jack the truck up only a few inches to remove the body, which was not crushed.
The overturned truck with the body of DAVIS underneath, was found by Alpheus SHELLENBARGER of Montour at 11:10. SHELLENBARGER was on his way home from LeGrand and noticed the truck in the ditch.
DAVIS was employed by the B.L. Anderson Construction Company of Marshalltown and had been working hauling gravel and crushed rock from the Coffin quarry to a highway project in Poweshiek county for the past three weeks. He had been living in a tourist camp on the north side of LeGrand.
Call County Officials
Tama county officials, including Sheriff Harry P. SHARP, Deputy Sheriff L. W. BURNS, County Attorney George Hl STRUBLE and Coroner Dr. A. J. WENTZIEN, were called to the scene of a fatal accident for the second time Monday night about 12 o’clock after Marshall county authorities had been telephoned. The accident was inside the Tama county line by more than tow miles, but those who first reached the accident were uncertain as to what county the accident had occurred in and called Marshalltown.
DAVIS had spent Sunday at his home and reported for work at LeGrand at 2 o’clock Monday morning and began hauling gravel an hour later. He worked throughout the day and spent the evening in Tama.
He was returning to LeGrand at the time of the accident. He had been awake for more than 24 hours and the hard days work and the long hours he had been without sleep are believed to have caused him to doze at the wheel and to lose control of the car.
DAVIS is survived by his widow in Decatur City. They have no children.
The body was taken to Mystic where burial will take place. Corner WENTZIEN said that there would be no inquest.

obit: Nina (MORRISON) DOUGLASS - 1848-1925

Dysart Reporter, Iowa 10 September 1925

IN MEMORIAN
Nina (MORRISON) DOUGLASS
Mrs. E. F. DOUGLASS, the subject of this brief memorian, whose sudden death was noted in the Reporter last week, was born January 4th, 1848 at Dixon, Illinois, her maiden name being Nina MORRISON.
She was united in marriage to Mr. E.F. DOUGLASS July 10th, 1873 at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. They made their home the following three years at Necedah, Wisconsin, then taking up their residence at Postville, Iowa, where Mr. DOUGLASS was in business.
In the year of 1885, she came with her husband to Dysart, where they have since continued their home. Mrs. DOUGLASS assisted her husband in the conduct of his drug store here, and also assisted in the post office when he was postmaster.
Mrs. DOUGLASS was most active in the church, social and lodge circles of our city and community, being affiliated with the Presbyterian church. She affiliated with the order of Eastern Stars in Vinton, and later when the lodge was organized at Dysart, she became a charter member of the local Chapter. She was an honored Past Worthy Matron; having been presented with her jewel at the ceremonial program in February, 1923. She was also a charter member of the Hearthstone Circle of Dysart.
Mr. and Mrs. DOUGLASS were never blessed with children in their home, yet their fifty-two years of travel down life’s pathway have been happy ones. On July 10th, 1923 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, holding open house during the afternoon and evening, when a large number of friends called to greet them and wish them continued joy and happiness.
Mrs. DOUGLASS’ friend were numbered by her acquaintances, to know her was to lover her, and she will be greatly missed by the sorrowing husband, other relative and friends.
Funeral services were held from the family home in Dysart last Friday afternoon at two o’clock, being in charge of the Dysart chapter O.E.S., the order also having charge of brief services at the grave. The casket was banked with beautiful floral offerings, attesting the high esteem in which deceased was held.
Among those from out of town to be present for the obsequies were: Miss Marjorie BURLINGAME, Alhambra, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Thos GALLAGHER and son Douglass of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. C.K. STEVENS of Chicago, Mrs. R.N. DOUGLASS, son Ray and daughter Ruth of Postville, F.L. MORRISON of Minneapolis, the later being a half brother of Mrs. DOUGLASS. Mr. and Mrs. R.W. WAITE and Mrs. S. CREPS of Waterloo, Mr. and Mrs. John MARSAU of Traer, and Mrs. C.C. GARDNER of Des Moines.

APPRECIATION
At this time words are inadequate for my sincere expression for the many kindnesses which were extended to me by the numerous friends in my sad hour at the time of the death and burial of my dearly beloved wife. The many kind acts of neighbors and friends, the assistance of the O.E.S. members and other organizations, the singers, pall bearers, those who tendered the beautiful flowers, those who gave of their time and lent assistance in any way. I appreciate your assistance and I say thank you from the depth of my heart. E.F. DOUGLASS
My sons are descendants of Mary Snyder and Antone Dvorak who married 7 June 1875. The children I have found to date are: John b. 1875 (m. Lucille?), Mary b. 1877 (m. Musel), Joseph b. 1881, Anna b. 1883 (m. Novotny), Frank b. 1885 (the boys' direct ancestor) (m. Emma Pitka), Charles b. 1887 (m. Elsie Pitka). I believe there were also George, Ed (the youngest) and Emma (m. Straits).

I am also working on the Pitka Family. The information so far is: Joseph Pitka m. Katie (Katherine)?. Their children were Charlie, Emma (m. Frank Dvorak), Elsie (m. Charles Dvorak), Fred b. 1897 (m. Libbie Uchytil), William (Bill) b. 1900 (m. Julia Kolash), and Julia. I believe Julia died before she was 21.

I also read on one of the web pages where the Pitkas were related to the Chamra family. Can anyone help me with this connection?

Also, do you have these Dvoraks or Pitkas in your family?

Thank you, Beth

Whitmore/Reed family information

I am interested in any information about the Whitmore family who lived in Tama County around 1866. Jared Lamb Whitmore [1827-1881] and Lydia Burnham Reed Whitmore [b. 1831-1914] came to Tama County in 1866 from Ohio. They had 9 children, among them my grandfather, Elnathan Hathaway Whitmore. He married my grandmother, Flora Belle Souder [1884-1951] in 1903 in Linn County, Iowa. I am interested in finding any information about my grandmother's family. At 18 months she was adopted by Crawford & Maria Hathaway Reed. I would like to find any information about her biological parents, if possible. Any help would be most appreciated.

Marian Newman Parsons

ROSS families in 1860 and later, trying to sort them out

Hello everyone, I am looking for information on the ROSS families of Tama County, Iowa. I am trying to either connect to a family or rule them out.

Specifically I am searching for parents/siblings of a John E. ROSS, b. @1847 in Ohio, both parents born in Ohio as well. (birthdate and birthplace are consistent in every census from 1870-1930, all found in Marion County, Iowa).

documentation for John E. Ross appeared in Knoxville Twp., Marion County, Iowa when he married Julia Emmaline Throckmorton on April 18, 1869.

There are ROSS lines in Tama County, including a county treasuer named John ROSS (he came to Tama in 1852)
I'd like to find out if he could be the parent or relation of my John E. ROSS. Any leads appreciated. Thanks, Julie
julie@juliesgenealogy.com

Tama County Resources

For those who are new to genealogy, there are some Tama County resources to help you get family history. A quick and easy one is the Tama County website, right here at rootsweb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~iatama/ . This website is continually growing, so check back frequently. Better yet, volunteer some typing time!

Another resource is the Tama County Historical Society and the (Tama) Tracers Genealogical Society in Toledo, Tama County, Iowa. A single membership is only $15 a year and is a real bargain. Your membership entitles you to receive their quarterly newsletter "Tama County Museum News". Their address is 200 N. Broadway St., Toledo, IA 52342-1308. Inside the April 2006 issue are:
Indian Village Township Map
Indian Village Township Overview
Early History of Montour - from the Toldeo Chronicle, 1 & 8 Jul 1875
1854 Indian Village Township Census
1860 Indian Village Township Census
as well as photos of the Butlerville Hotel, Stone Block (Union Hall) building - Montour and Montour's west railroad crossing about 1915.

The January 2006 Quarterly Newsletter had:
Highland Township Map
Highland Township Overview
Early History of Highland Township by James A. Merritt
1860 Salt Creek Township Census
Also, on the front page was a photo of Highland School #6, circa 1890's which included all the names of the students.

Good luck!
Sandy

Also would like to know if she died or if they divoriced. IN the 1920 he is listed as married to a Mary which was my aunt. Lediea was 26 in 1910 and it says they were married for 6 years so they must have been marrie about 1904.

Peter Bradbrook issue, if any please??

Hello all,

I'm trying to determine if Peter Bradbrook (son of Henry, b. 1832) who migrated from Ohio to Tama Co. ca. 1855 ever left issue. I know from the Woodlawn Cemetery tombstone inscriptions that he married an Elizabeth -?- who died at age 22.

Does anyone know if this union produced any children? I'm trying to eliminate possibilities on identifying a little girl about 7 or 8 years old, photographed in St. Louis about 1866 and hand labeled as "Jessie Bradbrook."

Thanks and Merry Christmas to all!!

Cap'n John

PS: If anyone is interested, I have VERY strong circumstantial evidence for two of Henry Bradbrook's brothers and a suspicion on several others.

I am looking for info on my ancestors John and Kathrine (Katie) Vana Bartacek or Bartachek which is the way we spell it now. They came to America in 1874 from Bohemia. John also brought his mother Maria Anna who was 56 yrs old at that time. They first came to the Salt Creek, Tama Co., Ia area before moving over to Poweshiek Co., Ia. There was also a Frances and a Joseph Bartachek in this area. Were Joseph, John & Frances all brothers? Where did they come from in Bohemia, and does anyone know anything about Maria Anna. I have not been able to find out where she was buried or when she died. I am also looking for family info on Kathrine's family which was "Vana."
