Dorothy Alice Celender was born in Lyndon, KS, on July 18, 1916 to Leonidas and Etta (Thompson) Shriver. She was the 8th daughter in a family of 10 girls. After graduating from Lyndon High School she moved to Pennsylvania and worked as a maid and also attended cosmetology school. On March 5, 1942 she married Joseph Celender in Wilkinsburg, PA. Dorothy worked as a beautician for a short time before working as a bookkeeper for the Singer Company from 1963 until her retirement in 1981. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Wilkinsburg, PA, where she was active in the Women's Choral Group and Christian Mothers. She was also a member of the Senior Citizens Center in Monroeville, PA, and was a charter member of the Prime Timers Club. Dorothy loved to sew and made all her own clothes. She also liked music and was a big Pittsburgh Steelers fan. In 1996 she moved to Vinton, IA, where she was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Following a lengthy illness, her death came peacefully at the Virginia Gay Hospital Annex on February 21, 2005 at the age of 88 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joe, in 1970, and eight sisters. She is survived by her two daughters, Charlotta Toth Fisher and husband, Nick, Mt. Auburn, IA, and Nancy Ball and husband, Jerry, Pittsburgh, PA; 4 grandchildren, Christopher Toth and wife, Esther, North Liberty, IA, Rachel McCain, North Liberty, IA, Robyn McIlwain and husband, Keith, Pittsburgh, PA, and Rebecca Ball, Pittsburgh, PA, 6 great grandchildren and one sister, Lillian Chisman, Christmas City, CA.
