In the past 24 hours I've uncovered part of my mystery. My William C Butterfield (born 1820, St. Johnsbury VT) was actually born COOLEDGE WILLIAM BUTTERFIELD! His parents were Shubael Butterfield and Lucretia Calkin.

Now I'm trying to find Shubael's parents.
