You could try searching the Iowa State Census Collection, if you have not already done so. Also, I've used the different County GenWeb sites for early online census to prove my ancestor was in a particular county.

THANK YOU, BOB!

I just got off the phone with Riverside Cemetery. The Aaron (died 1878) you described is the one for whom I was looking! He is buried there with his wife, Harriet (died 1907) and his daughter, Alice (died 1935). I am thrilled to have found them, with your assistance.

If there is anyone familiar with Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown who would be willing to take photos of their graves for me, the Pattersons are buried in Lot M, Lot 11.

Thank you!

Trying to locate Aaron B. Patterson, born c 1814 probably in Monroe County, New York.

Aaron was still in Pittsford, NY in the 1860 census. But the 1870 census shows Aaron in Marshall, Iowa with his wife Harriet Hecox, and daughter Alice.

Is anyone familiar with this family? Have you seen his name at the cemetery? Having a really tough time with this one and would appreciate any clues to his whereabouts. Thanks!

I am responding to JMS's email update hoping to connect with others interested in the immigration from Alsace to Ringgold County. My father's grandparents Christian Egly and Catherine Saltzman immigrated from Alsace in the early 1850's. My dad always said that the Saltzmans, Mosiers and Egly's in Ringgold County were all related, I have certainly found that to be true. I have come across all the names mentioned in this thread as I worked my way back to Alsace--I have not yet really concentrated on this line and hope to do so this winter. As noted I am very interested in connecting with anyone doing research on this heritage, which I believe to be Anabaptist/mennonite/amish in the old country. I plan to spend Oct. 30 visiting some cemeteries in Ringgold County. Those of us connected to Ringgold County are fortunate to have had people there doing great work in the cemetaries and posting many photos of stones on line, but I will try to seek out any that people might have an interest in documenting.

John Walter/s born 1826 Ohio to Ringgold Iowa "HELP"

I am doing research on the family that came from Germany to Pennsylvania to Ohio to Ringgold Iowa. I descend from John Walter and Susan Swigart, their daughter Catharine(this name has been passed down for generations, although spelled differently). I am so confused right now its not funny. I have run across trees that say John's (1826) father is John (1798) and mother is Sarah Gnagy(1800). I was trying to track down on the US 1850 census John(1826) family and John (1798) family. I have found both but I now believe John (1826) is not the son of John(1798). My reason being is that John (1826) was married and living with his wife Susanah(Susan) and their daughter Harriet who was born in 1848, they lived in Springfield Lucas Ohio. I found them under ancestry.com under the last name Walters. Now for John (1798) his family I also found on ancestry.com under the last name Watters, but they have a John listed as living there same birthdate as my John. What I dont get is how my John can be included as living in 2 places at once. They also have his son Christian (Watters) born in 1840 in Ohio living with the Rickman family(I don't get that either). My John (1826) died at the early age of 37 around 1864, his wife died 2 years before that which left his 3 daughters orphans. My G. G. Grandmother Catharine was very young at the time and I found her living with Catharine and Edward Stuck in the 1870 census in Lotts Creek Ringgold Iowa. I believe Catharine Stuck to be John's(1798) daughter. I have not located Harriet or Mary Elizabeth in the 1870's census to see who they were living with, I assume they were married though. They both married Harrows from Iowa that resided between Iowa and Missouri so I assume they stayed with someone in those areas.

I will now give a breakdown of familys

John Walter/s born 1826 in Ohio married Susannah Swigart born 1831 in Ohio

Thier children:
1.Catharine Ann born Oct 10 1860 in Iowa married William Shackelford. died in Sept 26 1919 in Omaha Nebraska.

2.Harriet born Aug 26 1848 in Ohio. Married Francis(Frank) M Harrow. I dont know where she died.

3.Mary Elizabeth born Aug 30 1852 in Ohio. Married James S Harrow, They divorced sometime before 1900. She died in Souix City Clay Iowa. I also dont know if she remarried.

John Walter/s born 1798 in Pennsylvania married Sarah Gnagy born 1800 in Pennsylvania.

Their Children:
1.John G born 1826 in Ohio. Married Susan Swigart

2.Michael born 1823 in ohio died at the age of 21 died in Ohio.

3.Peter born 1825 Ohio died at the age of 34 in Iowa.

4.Catharine born 1828 Ohio married Edward Stuck died 1903 in Iowa.

5.Frances(Fanny) born 1831 in Ohio. Married Isaac Swigart. Died 1921 in Iowa. I know for sure she is Johns kid.

6.Elizabeth born in 1833 in Ohio. Married Peter Andrews. Died 1924 in Iowa. I know for sure she is Johns kid.

7.Ann*Anna*Annie*Anne born 1838 in Ohio. Married a Rearick. She died in 1888 in Ohio. I know for sure she is Johns kid.

8.Christian born in 1840 in Ohio. Married a Strayer. Died 1891 in Ohio. I know for sure he is Johns kid.

Any one who has been researching this family please help me with this. Also is there any way it could be a mixup on the 1850 census and they accidentally added John cause they were use to him being there since he had recently moved on with his family?

Thanks,

Margie

I never heard Kathleen mention that info in all her extensive studying.
Also, the story of the name change because of brothers arguing was in the Cutshall side of the family, and you can find in--Gutshall, Cutshall, and Shall in other trees from that surname.
I know it has been a few years since you posted this. Have you found anything else? I still gather info for my children (4 girls!).
Cheryl Pettigrew

Thank you for pointing this out. I had no idea there were two George Griffiths living in Ringgold County during this time. The George I am tracking was living with his mother and her second husband in 1900 and 1910 but not in 1920. I assumed (wrongly it is now clear) that the George listed in 1920 as married to Maud was the same son. I will correct my database.

I should have mentioned it also has a short story about Jethro J. and Maria (Glover) Griffith on page 251. There are 2 pictures - one of the couple and one of their cabin where they were married. Page 251

The book on Page 252 has a short story about James and Cleota Griffith Family.

I find no listing in Index for George but did find this:
"Redding, Iowa - The First One Hundred Years 1882-1982."
Page 89: At the Redding Farmer's Institute Fair in 1906...Mrs. George Griffith is mentioned as one of the women heading the Pastry Department.
Page 95: Lists Maud as a member of the card club, Idyleawhyle.
Page 98: Lists Maude Griffith and Velma in picture of Helpers Union, Organized in 1920.

Velma Griffith who married a Delbert Sterner:
"Redding, Iowa - The First One Hundred Years 1882-1982."
Page 53: Velma was in eigth grade in 1927.
Page 61: Velma was a teacher of the 4-5th grades in Redding School in 1938.

If you have information on George, let me know.

There is a picture of Clara "Mae" Griffith and husband J.Ray Miller on page 254. Story about J.Ray's parent on page 253.

I made no notes in my software of finding more information on George.
Dianne, I am interested in the name of the McLaughlin listed in the Guardian's Deed. You state he had custody of four Bush children. My gggrandfather lived in Ringgold Co. in 1905-1906 prior to moving to Letcher, SD. At about this time my ggrandmother had lost her husband to TB and am wondering if maybe she had turned the children over to her parents while dealing with his illiness and death. The children would have been Esther M., Madge I., George M., and Theodore O. Please let me know if this might be John McLaughlin. Thank you.

Caroline,
Your mom, Rosetta Fern, had 4 sisters. Blanch Mary Hoover,
Victoria Baker, Winnie, and Arlene. There were also 4
brothers. Your grandparent's first son was born to them in Buffalo, Missouri, but ALL the rest were born in Leon, Iowa. George M. Cooper had only one wife, Cora Ann Moody.

Antel Pearl Clark & Winnie Cooper produced a daughter in 1926. If he had another child, it was with someone else.

If you'd like to discuss this, you can reply to the Message Board or to my personal e-mail chachipup@yahoo.com

My gg grandfather, John Davis Carter (aka: Wheelhorse Carter)
attended the ceremony that day, as a veteran from the Civil War. The article indicates photos were taken with the old soldiers. There were 4 Civil War vets present; my gg grandfather was the oldest, at 94 and he passed away the next year. It was the Ellis C. Miller Post. The SURNAMES of those serving in post positions were: Bickett, Duncan, Holden, Osborn, Soles and White. Other vets were Judge Keller and Bernard Preston. My thanks for any leads and or efforts.

I've been to the Redding Cemetery on many occasions and I don't recall seeing a headstone for George & Maude Griffith.
I believe Scarlett Glover is correct in that this George is of another line.
Happy hunting.
jerijack

This is what I have found out since I posted the email.
Fitch, McConel (McDonald): Born in Indiana, Died at ? Monday Oct 5th, 1883 from consumption. Book A-22-10
1890 Soldier, sailor, marine report:
PVT Co K, 4th MN infantry, Feb 2nd 1862 to March 21st. 1821st 1864
PVT Co K 4th MN Inf. 29th of Mar 1864 to July 9th 1865
Post Office Address: Granite Falls
Disability Incurred: consumption, exposure from Sherman march from to the sea.
Widow filed report

Disability of liver and lungs, $50.00

Nov 6th, 1883-
McDoanld Fitch died at Mt. Agr Iowa Monday Oct 5th. Mr. Fitch has long been a resident of GF, and at the time of his death sojourning in other climates with the end in view of recovering from the consumption with which disease he had long been a suffer.
Mr. Fitch was a member of the Masonic order and it was thought at the news of his death that his remains would be brought back to GF for burial, but at the present writing it has not been done. And it is probable now that it will not be. Mr. Fitch was once connected with the newspaper business of the place and at one time was a postmaster.
