Hi, I was born in Emmettsburg, Palo Alto County, in 1932, in a house across the street from the convent, and am the Great Granddaughter of Jack and Etta Livingston. Their daughter, Blanch married Perry Wilson. They lived in Milford Iowa. Perry and Blanch had ten children, one of them my mother Florence who married Vearl Miller from Dumont, Iowa. Blanch had a sister Emma who in later life lived with her. I have been trying to locate these Livingstons and was told they were from Ruthven area of Palo Alto County. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Belva

Hi Lyn,

Thanks for your response. I have a Jack (could be John) and Etta (could be Julietta) Livingston whose daughter was Blanche, my grandmother. She married a Perry Wilson from Milford, IA. My brother tells me that he had visited the Ruthven Cemetery which must be in Palo Alto county. He saw many graves with the name Livingston and our mother told him that they were family members. It sounds like you may be my connection to the Livingston family. I look forward to learning more about them. Some of my mothers first cousins at her funeral in Spirit Lake had not seen me since I was a baby. They all agreed that I sure looked like the Livingstons. What ever that means. I did not live with my mother after 8 years old but visited her periodically while growing up. She did not talk much about her family. Have you posted your Livingston data on any of the genealogy web sites? Looking forward to hearing from you. Belva

The Julia Etta Livingston in my research is the daughter of James Wilson and Mary Margaret Gorbit, born in 1851 in LaSalle County Illinois. In 1872, she married John D. Livingston. She had 12 children and one marriage.

My great grandfather was Jack Livingston and his wife Julia Etta Livingston. My grandfather was Charles Lawrence Livingston born 4-8-82 in Minburn. My father was Fred Joseph Livingston born in Lake Township, Clay County on 11-11-06.

I very interested in corresponding with you about the Livingston descendents of of Jack and Julia.

Regards,

David Livingston

P.S. Sorry about such a long time in getting involved in geneology but I live in Houston and have just completed a trip through upper Iowa to look at grave yards and court record for Livingstons. Having found the grave site of Jack and Julie in Ruthven my interest has increased immensely.

David,
I have some information on the Livingston Family. My aunt was Shirley Livingston b.Jun 10 1920,Milford,Dickinson,Iowa,d.Jan 11 1998,Milford,Dickinson,Iowa.She was the daughter of Charles Lawrence Livingston and Eula Evelyn Edmonds. Charley and Eula separated soon after Shirley's birth.Charley moved to Cresco,Iowa with the other kids and farmed for some time, then started a tool company, which turned into the Livingston Tool Company of Algona,Iowa.Charley and his partner,Burton Harms, developed an irrigation valve and gate system that became popular in the southwest. That led Charley to start the Livingston Irrigation Company of Phoenix,Arizona.Your father,I believe, was part of that company. The Livingston's that I knew were Guy and Viola from Milford,Iowa. Charley and his second wife from Algona,Iowa and,of course,Shirley, who married Milton(Mick)Sanders from Milford,Iowa. We lived on the farm next to Mick and Shirley and I grew up with their children,Patty,Mike and Steve.
I do have other geneology information and personal history if you are interested.
Sincerely,
Bill Sanders

David...I see that you got a response to your query on the Livingston family. I have lots of photos of the Ruthven folks and would be happy to send them to you. Our most distant ancestor is Luke Livingston born in Georgeville Canada. He made his home in Ottawa Illinois. We know that he was related to Charles L., but not sure just how. Keep in touch. Lyn

Bill,

Many, many thanks for your post.

If my memory is correct, I believe we may have met though a long time ago.

I spent a summer in 1961 on Mick and Shirley’s farm. As a city boy, that experience is as sharp and as meaningful today as it was 47 years ago. I have many fond memories of Mick, Shirley, Mike, and Steve from those two months (Patty was not there that summer). I also have fond memories of that part of Iowa – Arnolds Park, Milford, Spencer, Estherville, and Terrill.

One afternoon that summer, Mick, Mike, Steve and I went over to your dad’s farm to help bale hay (at least I think it was hay. It could have been something else like alfalfa.). I believe that your dad’s nick name was Slip (I may have spelled this wrong.) I seem to remember that he had some children so if you alive then, I probably met you. I can’t say that you made an impression on me though. I clearly remember baling the hay since it was hot, hard, and dirty work. I rode on a flat top wagon that was pulled behind the baler (pulled by a tractor) and with Mike and Mick tried to keep up with the bales coming out and get them stacked.

My father died in 1983. He served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years. After he retired, he went to a small Baptist teacher’s college in Phoenix to get an elementary education teaching degree and taught school until 1972 when he retired. He actually was not part of Charlie’s business (or at least not on a day to day basis). I grew up in Phoenix, went to college and got a degree in chemical engineering, and have worked as a chemical engineer since. Most of this time was spent in Houston or Mobile, Alabama.

In April last year, I made a trip through upper Iowa to look for Livingston graves and other information. I spent some time in Cresco and found a copy of the high school year book for my father’s senior year. I believe he only went to Cresco high school for two years and graduated in 1925. Before that he was in Milford. We drove to Spencer, spent the night and looked for graves in Ruthven and Milford the next day. I found Charlie’s father’s grave (John or Jack Livingston) and his mother’s (Julia Wilson Livingston) in Ruthven. In Milford, we found the graves of Eula and Ethel Bell Livingston (my father’s older sister who died in Milford in 1913 the day before my father turned seven).

I have a sister Ethel who lives in San Diego. I have two daughters but no sons. My father’s first family (he was married to a woman named Ruth from Cresco) produced a son named Frederick Livingston. He is deceased but had two sons and a daughter. I am not in touch with them.

In November 2002, I met Steve Sanders in Indianapolis at the funeral from Francis Livingston who was Shirley and my dad’s brother. I did not get an address from him so I have not been in touch with him.

I would like very much like to hear more from you.

Sincerely,

Dave

Lyn,

I am sorry I have been so tardy in not replying to your posts.

I believe I have an answer to your comment about Luke Livingston.

John Livingston, Jr. was born in Sorel, Canada around 1829. He served in the civil war in the First Regiment of the Vermont Cavalry as well as Fifteenth Regiment of Vermont Volunteers. I have originals of his discharge papers from both regiments. According to the information I have John Livingston Jr. had at three sons and a daughter who grew up to adulthood.

Sons
John D. Livingston (father of Charles Lawrence Livingston, b1882, d 1962 along with 5 sisters and 5 brothers - Charles was my grandfather)

Charles Livingston who was an Episcopal minister on Long Island, New York (I have a picture of him in 1938 that he gave Charlie)

Luke Livingston (who I believe is your Luke Livingston)

Jane Crabee of Wilder Vermont.

The infomation I have about John D. Livingston (brother of Luke) is that he was born in Newport, Vermont on 11-29-1849. I also have another piece of information that say he was born in Georgeville, Canada on the same date. Georgeville, Quebec is about 14 miles due north of Newport. Newport itself is about four miles from the border.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Dave
