MUSCATINE, Iowa - Joan M. Kerschenske, 78, Muscatine, passed away Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at Select Specialty Hospital in Davenport.
Mrs. Kerschenske was born April 6, 1932, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the daughter of Cyril L. and Agnes L. (Akins) Marsh. She married Harold E. Kerschenske July 2, 1955, in Rock Island, Ill.
She was a member of the Unity Auxiliary. She was a movie buff and enjoyed drawing, coloring, Native American culture, going out to eat and most of all spending time with her family.
She will be deeply missed by her children, Jerry Kerschenske of Topeka, Kan., Tracey Iserhott and husband, Doug Lathrop of Sweethome, Ore., Laurie Schmoldt and husband, Michael of Seattle, Wash. and Andy Kerschenske of Muscatine; eight grandchildren, several great grandchildren; a sister, Sandra Frye and a brother, Thomas Marsh.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in 1995.
DURANT, Iowa - James George Knudsen, 82, Durant, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at his home.
The Rev. Gaylor Nelson will officiate.
Memorial donations may be made to Durant Ambulance Service in his memory.
Serving as casketbearers will be Sara Riessen, Benjamin Riessen, James Riessen, Keith Carter, Richard VanDeWalle and Pete Grunder. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the A.T. & M. Platoon represented by Merle Hendrikson, Ivan Marckman and Everett Kruckenberg.
He was born Feb. 22, 1928, to Charles and Sara (Kundert) Knudsen in Durant. He married Alberta Elaine Paustian July 10, 1954, in Davenport.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
He owned and operated Standard Service, Durant for 50 years retiring in 1994.
He was a member of the Durant American Legion Post No. 430 and the Wilton Masonic Lodge No. 167 AF & AM. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, New York Yankees and the Durant Wildcats.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Alberta of Durant; his daughter, Mary Riessen of Durant; his grandchildren, Sara Riessen and fiance, Keith Carter of Cedar Rapids, Benjamin Riessen of Davenport, and James Riessen of Cedar Rapids; two great-grandchildren, Brady and Isaac Riessen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son-in-law, Russell Riessen and his sister ,Jean Epping.
WAPELLO, Iowa - Betty Arlene Finley, 81, Wapello, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at the Great River Hospice House in West Burlington.
The Rev. Dan Doolin will officiate.
Mrs. Finley was born June 23, 1929, the daughter of Ira and Flora Peterson Marlette, in Oakville.
She married Delbert "Deb" Finley July 20, 1950, in Morning Sun. He preceded her in death Oct. 22, 2002.
She had worked at the Button Factory in Wapello and at Heinz in Muscatine and also the Poage Nursing Home in Wapello.
She helped her husband as a cemetery caretaker and with other various mowing. She was a homemaker and raised a large family. As an artist she enjoyed drawing.
She is survived by five sons, Delbert Finley and wife, Beverly, William Finley and wife, Grace, John Finley, Sam Finley, all of Wapello, and Harry Finley and wife, Jennifer of Columbus Junction; a daughter, Susan Yakle and husband, David of Wapello; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Delbert; and a daughter, Dorothy Kingery.
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - "Tommy Thomas," 80, Bloomington, Minn., passed away Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011.
He was born July 4, 1930, in Estherville, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Inez (Starks) Thomas.
He is preceded in death by his parents ; siblings Keith Thomas, Beverly (Thomas) Stobbart and Eleanor (Thomas) Edwards.
He is survived by his wife, Deorseal (Earls) Thomas; sons, David Thomas and wife, Shari, Micah Thomas; daughters, MaryAnn (Thomas) Andersen and husband, Scott, Vicki (Thomas) Jay and husband, Scott; grandchildren, Jason Andersen, Arthur Andersen, Elise (Andersen) Gardner and husband, Jerrid, Daniel Jay and Jack Thomas; great- granddaughter, Sophie Gardner; siblings, Joann (Thomas) Grimm, Fauniel (Thomas) Kautz; sister in-law, Beverly (Shields) Thomas; and many nephews and nieces.
He graduated from Muscatine High School in 1949 and was know as ‘Tommy' Thomas to friends and family.
He served in the 5th Air Force, 6147th Tactical Control Group Korea Mosquito. He served his country well.
After retuning home he graduated from Drake University with a master's degree in accounting. As a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather he will be greatly missed.
MUSCATINE, Iowa — Roy J. Austill, 79, Muscatine, formerly of Woodland Park, Colo., passed away Monday, Jan.17, 2011, at Bickford Cottage in Muscatine.
A private memorial will be held. Jeffrey S. Nichols - Garden Ridge Funeral and Cremation Services is caring for the arrangements.
Mr. Austill was born April 20, 1931, at Chanute, Kan., the son of Roy George and Laura Gertrude Hammond Austill. He married Gail P. Krumbholz Oct. 11, 1969, in Davenport.
He was a graduate of Tri-State College in Indiana with a batchelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He retired from the Rock Island Arsenal in 2000.
He enjoyed ballroom dancing, traveling and participating with the senior club.
Those left to honor his memory include sons, Wayne J. Austill of Lockhart, Texas and Scott Mohr of Stockton; daughters, Tamara Grothe of Baytown, Texas and Pamela Baker of Wilton; and a sister, Virginia McGee of Eudora, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife in 2007.
