In the book, "Foster, Iowa, Kinser Valley, and Monroe County, Iowa" written by Bob Kocur, there are many mines mentioned. Shepard, Phillips, Excelsior, Bear Creek, Albia Coal Company, Tillotson, Waughop, Acme Coal Co., Dallas Coal Mine, White Oak, Haydock, Everist, Smokey Hollow and Maple Coal Company. I have notes from the book on the Maple Coal Co. as being located at Wanlock, 4 miles west of Lovilia. In Monroe Co. in Union Twp., there were 23 underground mines and 6 strip mines in 1952.
