LUCAS CO. I read that John Llewelyn LEWIS, famous labor leader of 1940-1980 coalminers, was born in Lucas Co. in 1880. Is there a John L. LEWIS expert reading this who could give me a hand with a chronology of his life?

Also looking for birth county in Iowa of Robert F. SILL, parents Daniel SILL and Isabell STEBBENS. Robt. F. is said to have worked with LEWIS on a drilling crew, but time and place is uncertain. Probably Illinois.

Is anyone working on the Webb family? I'm looking for a precise date of birth for Gaybrella "Gay" Webb, daughter of Sampson and Martha McDonald Webb, who married my Great-great-uncle William Owen Miller as his second wife on 10 November 1890. They moved to Burns, Cheyenne County, Wyoming, during 1908; and she died 7 May 1949, possibly in Cheyenne. They had two daughters, Nellie (Miller) Crow(e) and Gertrude (Miller) Hawk, who have so far eluded me. Any leads?

Bridget and Sarah Bradshaw, Chicago

My great-grandfather, John Bradshaw, born c.1845, Clare Island, County Mayo, Ire. came to Chicago around 1870 after living in Allamakee County, Iowa, when the family emigrated in 1854. His parents were Myles or Martin (I'm not sure which is correct) Bradshaw and Winnie (O'Malley) Bradshaw. He had three sisters (all born Clare Island, Mayo), Mary became a Nun (Sister Valeria) and went to Oakland, CA.

Bridget, born c. 1836, and Sarah, b. late 1840's were last listed in the 1880 Fed. Census for Chicago. They were both single and living with their brother (my great-grandfather), his wife, Kate (Grady) Bradshaw, and their mother Winnie Bradshaw. After that census, I've lost track of them. They could have married, or both could have died before the 1900 Census. I've searched that Census by first names, possible variations of first names and cannot find them anywhere.

If anyone would have any information on Bridget and Sarah Bradshaw in Chicago from 1880 on, I would be very grateful for the information.

Kate Bradshaw Davis

Josie (1879-1914) is the d/o Andrew A. Woods and Lucetta J. Mossbarger Woods.

Fredrick and Josie Powell lived in Des Moines, Polk Co, IA and had five children: Donald, Walter, Bernard, Bessie, and Harry. After Josie's death in 1914, the children were placed in the Soldier's Orphan's Home in Des Moines, per 1915 Iowa Census.

Why were the children placed in the Home instead of going to live with relatives? What happened to the children after they left the Home? Was Josie's death suspicious, as hinted at by a family researcher? What happened to Fredrick Powell?

Hello,

Josiah Showell Mumford was born in 1812 in Maryland and moved to Lucas county. I have found him in the 1856 Liberty census under the name of Joseph with his son James b. 1847, daughter Sary (should be Sarah) b. 1848 and son John b. 1850 all born in MD. It indicated he'd been in IA for 3 years. I next find him in the 1870 in the English census as Joseph with son, John. It indicates that Joseph is either deaf and dumb, blind, insane, idiotic, pauper or convict. Next I find them again in the 1880 English Census with Josiah living with John and the 1885 Jackson census with the same information.

I have been searching for more information on the family and cannot locate them in the 1860 Census. Am intrigued by what sort of afflication he suffered from. He passed in 1892 in Clarke County. Does anyone have knowledge of further resources in Lucas county?

POW/MIA Korean War. Lucas Co. MUSICK

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Lucas County, Iowa as his home of record.

Soldier: GEORGE MUSICK
Born: September 15, 1917. Caucasian
Date of loss: September 3,1950. KIA

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 34 families in Iowa that have not been located. There is one family from Lucas County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Hello,

Am researching my Hall line and trying to understand the information I have. In the 1925 IA State Census in Pleasant, Lucas, IA I show Lila (Hall) Foster and her husband Ray or Roy Foster. His middle name looks like a T or an F? Also shown are their children: Virginia L. and Bettie Foster. His parents are given as: Albert and Mildred (Nickson?)Foster. Their marriage took place in Chariton, Lucas, IA.

In the 1930 Census I have Lila and Virginia and Betty again (as well as Theodore Jr, Everett and Phyllis), but this time the husband is Theodore A. Foster. In the 1910 Census I found a Theodore A. Fater in Pleasant, Lucas, Iowa with the parents Albert and Mildred.

Any clues into this mystery would be helpful. I don't know if there was a big error in the 1925 Census or she married brothers?

I have recently acquired a large book of people who did in Lucas county and is buried in one of the counties cemetaries. The book was completed in 1979 but my grandmother kept track and wrote in the book other deaths for some time after that. If you would like me to try to find somebody for you just let me know name and possible death date.

Also got a copy of Lucas county history written 1978. Also have the Marion County cemeteries up to 1976 with many additions after completion.

Welcome to give any help I can.

Lisa Cox

John Engle b August 19, 1826 d March 1, 1905 m Mary Abigail Sargent August 12, 1866 in Lucas Co., IA There were 4 children Rosella, Laura, Ida and Frank. Abigail then married Sam Myers August 17, 1879. I only have a death date of July 5, 1937. Now here is the complicated part. This second marriage took place before John's death. Would like to know why? They are all buried in Newbern Cemetery. Abigail with Sam Myers. I do know that Sam Myers lived with Abigails daughter Rosella till his death, and she considered him her father. Hope to hear from someone that has a connection or can help solve this mystery.

She married Daniel Joseph Cox before 1857, and they had three sons: Theodore Cicero b. 1857, James Wesley b. 1864, and Daniel Joseph b. 1870. I cannot find any reference to them in the 1860 or 1870 census, but the boys and their mother show up in Lucas County, Iowa in the 1880 census (Percilla's last name at that time is Rules).

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Marianne Spencer
Indianapolis, Indiana

On the 1860 and 1870 federal census, both Stephen Chance and David Hodson were enumerated in English twp. Lucas County and the Post Office was Chariton. I would like to have copies about information on these two families as well as information on the Brawner and Poush families who may have lived there. If there are no books, are there old newspaper articles I could get copies of? Please let me know how much it would cost.

What happened to Grace Ann Stoneking b. 1879, Pleasant?

1860 and 1870 US Federal Census records have a family of Stoneking's living in the City of Pleasant, Lucas County, Iowa with P.O. = Chariton. James b. abt 1820, PA and wife, Sophronia [York?] b. abt 1833, PA - had about 11 children. I am particularly interested in Amanda E. Stoneking b. Mar 1860, IA who had a child named Grace Ann abt 1879, [no daddy identified thus far]; Both Amanda "Manda" E. and her dau Grace were b. in Pleasant; then Amanda m abt 1893 to a Daniel Webster Barnes b. Jan 1855, Indiana. It is possibly his 2nd marriage(?) A 'son' named Thomas Barnes b. Sept 1881 is listed with D.W. & Amanda Barnes on the 1900 US Federal Census. What happened to Grace Ann? If she lived and married, it would most likely be in Lucas County, Iowa ? Then what happens to D.W. and Thomas Barnes after 1900? Amanda becomes the 2nd wife to widower Sylvester Drake in 1907 Marion County Iowa. The m. license has Amanda "Manda" E.'s parents identified as "James Stoneking" and "Sofrona York"(?)
In 1910, Sylvester and Amanda E. [Stoneking/Barnes] are living in Chariton Ward 1, Lucas, Iowa @ 1534 Iowa Avenue. In 1920, Sylvester dies from a 50-foot fall in an elevator shaft at the Kirkwood Hotel in Des Moines and dies 12 hours later. Amanda is not mentioned in Sylvester's 5 Feb 1920 obit at all. What happened to her? I have no hits on any of my database searches. Per the 1900 and the 1910 censuses, Amanda had given birth to 2 children both of whom were alive at the time of the censuses. Grace Ann is one, Thomas [H. or N.]? Barnes might be another one... can any of you Stoneking or Lucas County, IOWA researchers help me fill in the blanks? I have gleaned the Marion County, Iowa Cem. Book (VI & VII) - I know where Sylvester and his 1st wife, Artemis Pope Drake, are buried ---- but no sign of Amanda. Sylvester Drake was my great grandmother's only brother.
Thank you,
Sally
from Springville, AL [sort of like "Spring BO" ALABAMA!]

Seeking information on this family transcribed by Ancestry.com as Vanney but I believe it should be Van Wy.
Found on page one of the Lucas County, English Township census records household #3 is John Van Wy, farmer age 43 born in Ohio. His wife is 38 year old Mary also born in Ohio.
Born in Ohio - Webster age 19, Mary O. - 17; born in Illinois - Marcell - 11, Catherin P. - 8, Virginia - 7; and born in Iowa is Pheoba E. age 4. Thus I estimate they moved from Ohio to Illinois circa 1856 - 1859 and then again to Iowa after the Civil War circa 1866.

So far I have not located them in 1880 nor in Illinois in 1860 or Ohio in 1850. Are there other records available locally there in Lucas County that might cast light on this family group? Or perhaps a knowledgable descendent.

Note that on page 2, family 13 of this English township's census listing is the family of Charles W. Vanney [Van Wy, Van Wey]. One strongly suspects that there is a relationship between these family heads, Charles and John, given their birthdates - jumping to the conclusion of brothers is not too outrageous. But confirmation would be nice. As would some idea of where in Ohio they originated.

Originally, I found this Lucas County John while searching the 1870 census for John, the son of Elijah Van Wy of Madison County, Iowa born circa 1835. This family also originated in Ohio. I have rather complete info on his siblings in Madison County and his ancestors; but after 1860 census he has gone missing and I cannot but wonder if he was a Civil War casualty. Given the age disparity John living in Lucas County is not John from Madison County. But now I have two more family groups from English Township to demystify.
Thanks for any local assistance with any of these families, especially the former Lucus County residents.
Thornburg & Walker m June 06, 1876 Lucas Co?

I am hoping to come through the IA area around Lucas Co & Wayne Co this summer. I am still looking for information on my great grandfather John Thornburg. He and Mary Walker were married in IA on June 06, 1876 according to family records. We understood they were in Lucas County. (Her family was in Wayne County and I have more on her line and her son-in-laws line but I'm stumped on the Thornburgs.) We understand he was working for the Railroad and Mary was working at the depot. He had left before the census in 1880 (1880 Census IA vol2 ED 245) as his daughter Hetta Rebecca Thornburg Alexander (my grandmother b 1877) was with Mary Thornburg & her mother Rebecca Walker. My 92 year old aunt recalls being told the Thornburgs still lived in that area in 1885 when Mary remarried to Harris. NEED HELP ON THORNBURGS.

I have a newspaper article about J.C. Flatt from the Charitan, Iowa Herald-Patriot dated April 27, 1933. I also have a photo taken about 1930 of J.C. Flatt with my father's uncle, Roland Jessup. What I don't have is a clue as to why these were retained among the family records. I don't know whether J.C. Flatt was a relative or a family friend.

Does anyone know who J.C. Flatt was? I would be happy to share copies of the article and photo to anyone that would like them.

Good hunting!

Dan Jessup

Look up: Samuel Jones, Lucas Iowa

My g-g-grandfather, Samuel Jones, was killed in a mining accident on June 9, 1886. I believe he is buried in Fry Hill Cemetery near Lucas. When I was younger I remember visiting the town of Lucas and met a man that worked in a local bank. He was very knowledgeable and had a record of his death along with the location of his unmarked grave. I recently contacted the Lucas County Genealogical Society and they do not have a record of his burial, but they did have articles on the accident. I’d appreciate any assistance or information that anyone can provide. My trail has growing cold.

His name was Samuel Jones and he was born around 1857 in Wales. He married Elizabeth Tennant from Scotland on October 18, 1884 in Lucas County, Iowa. They had two children, John T. Jones born October 13, 1885 and Samuel T. Jones born February 26, 1887. Elizabeth most likely did not know she was pregnant with my g-grandfather Samuel Jones until after her husband’s death.

Possible obit Lookup for Rosetta (or Lucetta) Ross Marsh

If anyone could please look to see if there is an obituary for Rosetta Ross Marsh, I would sure appreciate it. I think that Rosetta might have been adopted by Joseph Reed Morris and Martha Larimer, but have no way of finding that out. Rosetta or Lucetta "Morris"(as she was referred to in the 1870 Iowa, Lucas, Chariton census) moved to Warren County, Illinois, where she is found in the 1880 Census. She married a man named Theophilus Marsh 09/01/1884 in Warren County Illinois, where her name was reported as Rosetta Ross. They were next found in the 1900 Iowa, Lucas, Lincoln census. Their children's names were Mattie M, Walter B, Edna V and Artie L Marsh. Lucetta or Rosetta was supposedly born on Oct. 17 1864 Lucas County. The death date I have for her is Oct 5, 1946 in Galesburg, IL. If anyone has any information could you please contact me @ tysonalexander2@hotmail.com . Any information would be greatly appreciated Sincerely Bonnie Miller

Does anyone have any information about this marriage or the families involved? Lewis Henry Smith was My Great Grandfather on my mother’s side. I found the wedding listing in the Lucas Co. marriage records. He was a Methodist minister, and Ora was his second wife, and I believe Ora may have been from the Melcher/Dallas area. His normal home area was Kansas, and that is where he served. Unfortunately, I have no family members that have any recollection of the event, Except that my mother confirmed it was accurate. L H's first wife was Marion Day, and she was the mother of my Grandmother, Mary Katherine (Smith) Anderson

I am seeking information on Harriet, Margaret, and Mary MARIETTA - daughters of Uriah MARIETTA. All three were born in Fayette or Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania. Harriet was born about 1833, Margaret about 1839, and Mary about 1843. In 1857 the family left Pennsylvania for Iowa, settling initially in Clarke County. The three sisters appear in the Clarke County 1860 census, and that's the last I've found on them so far. The family later moved to adjacent Warren County, but the sisters do not appear in the 1870 census. Marriage, death, and cemetery records of both Clarke and Warren counties have been searched without success as yet. Does anyone have any information on what became of any these three young women?

Politicians in Lucas County

I am trying to find a photo of my ancestor, Eli W. NICHOLS (1837-1903). According to his obituary, he was the mayor of an unnamed city. He lived in Cleveland, Jackson Twp., Lucas Co., IA in 1880 and 1900 so I suspect that Cleveland is the right city but it was a coal-mining town and is now defunct. This may make it hard to find any information about Cleveland's public officials, much less a photo of someone who was mayor in the 19th century.

It is important to get a copy of a photo of Eli in order to specifically identify photos in my family's possession that I think are of him. This may be the only way to do it. If anyone has any idea on how to proceed with this, please reply and let me know. This seems like a solvable problem and I hope that someone will be able to tell me what the solution is. Thanks.

Lars J Swangren, Corrected Post- I am looking for information from descendents

Lars J Swangren was an immigratant from Sweden, emigrated from Sweden 4/26/1968. He is found in the 1880 census for Lucas County, Iowa together with wife Christine (born in Sweden), daughter Christine (born in Sweden), daughter Almie born in Iowa, and son Emanuel born in Iowa.

Swedish emigration records show him traveling with a married woman, presumably his wife who is shown as Johanna Gustava Johansdotter, and daughter Tekla Christina Svengren. The 1880 Federal census show two additional children, Almie (age 10 in 1880), and Emanuel (age 2) both born in Iowa

The name of the woman immigrating (Johanna Gustava) obviously does not match the wife shown on the census (Christina). This raises the possibility that Johanna may have died and that Lars remarried.

I am wondering if there are any descendents of Lars who could answer this question.

I am specifically trying to find more information about "Almie", is there any hope of finding a birth certificate, possibly in Lucas County that gives the precise name of Almie. She may be the Alma for whom I am searching.

I have been unable to located Lars J Swangren on any subsequent Federal census years. After he died Christina may have remarried to a Mr. Nelson.

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

R L Jorgensen
