I know this was posted a while back but just wanted to share some info on A.H French.
Augustus Harley French married to Cordelia Thurston in 1840. Resided in Washington, Iowa Lucas County. I have no info on the Frenchs past Augustus, sadly. I am looking for info on his siblings and parents. Hope that helped a little.

Georgia's parents, Charles R. and Celestine Bond are listed on the same page, just below the Ashby listing.

Charles R. and Celestine Bond are also found on the 1880 US Census, same township and county in Iowa. I have information that Joseph was a Physician in Lucas Co, IA and that he died in 1866 in Lincoln Co, NE, but after finding him in the 1860 census in Lucas Co, IA and then finding the widowed Lucy in the 1870 census in Lucas Co, IA living with her children (Lizzie, Hasson and Minnie) and father (Elijah Collins) I have to wonder if they are buried in Lucas Co, IA or not. Can anyone help me with this? Did Lucy marry again and what happen to her and her children? They are not in Lucas Co in the 1880 census. Help

In this case, the 1880 census lists Percilla "Rules" as age 55, born in OH, dating her birth to circa 1825.

Note that in 1850, a Percilla H Sheppard of the correct age was enumerated in Bridgeton, Cumberland, NJ

Alice Lucinda Haines Cross Comstock Jones

This abstract of an obit is posted on the Van Buren, Lucas and Jefferson County Obit boards:

"Fairfield Tribune", Mar. 29, 1923, Pg. 3, Col. 1

LIBERTYVILLE. Alice Haines COMSTOCK JONES, born at Lucas, Lucas Co., Iowa, May 11, 1861, died at Libertyville Mar 19, 1923, aged 61-10-8. Married May 14, 1908 at Keosaqua, Thomas B. JONES who died in Sept., 1920. Member M.E. Church. Leave six sisters and one brother. Interment in Fell Cemetery.

We believe this is Alice Lucinda Haines, born 1861 in Lucas County, IA, daughter of Jacob & Mariah [Miller] Haines.

We think Alice had the following marriages:

M1 George H. Cross, m. abt 1880, possibly in Toulon, Stark County, IL.
M2 Howard A. Comstock, m. 12 Feb 1891 in Lucas County, IA.
M3 Thomas B. Jones, m. 14 May 1908 in Keosaqua, IA

Alice Jones is enumerated in 1920 in Lick Creek Twp, VanBuren County, IA as a widow, so Thomas died before Sept. 1920. When did Thomas die and where is he buried?

Did George H. Cross and Howard A. Comstock die prior to Alice's subsequent marriages, or did the marriages end in divorce?

We are searching for any additional info/confirmation that this is our Alice Haines.

Thanks,
Sheila

Is the latter on microfilm at the Polk County Library?

After Fred Powell was aquitted of Josie's death, he remarried and eventually settled in San Diego County, CA. Perhaps we'll never know if Josie died of meningitis or spousal abuse. So far, I haven't found any evidence that Fred was reunited with his children.

Sanford Thorn in 1856 Census

I have found a "HIT" for Sanford Thorn in Lucas Co. IA, with a search at Ancestry dot com. The info is sketchy at best as I do not have a subscription. The entry evidently is contained in the book, "Iowa State Census Collection 1836 - 1925". Ancestry shares the information that Sanford Thorn's residence in 1856 was Lucas Co, Iowa. Should this prove true, it would be the earliest census that I have found him in.
One branch of ourfamily recalls that Sanford had a Fram at the fork of the Rackoon in Lucas County. & his daughter Nancy Jane Thorn/Sones was born there at the farm in Lucas Co.
If you are able to help, please contact.

Richard Russell, born in late 1700s in New York

For some years I have been searching for the names of the parents of Richard Russell who was born at the very end of the 1700s in New York. Recently I discovered that during the state census of 1856, Richard Russell was living in Warren in Lucas County, Iowa. He was living in the household of his son Sidney Russell, 29, and Maryann, also 29: Sidney had been born in Ohio, Maryann in Vermont. "Coonlie," born about 1847 lived with them as did "Finita," [really Foretta] age 3. Apparently Richard and his wife were living separately; she was not dead although he was listed as a widower. (This family is hard to research.)

I knew that Richard's children were in and out of Iowa in pioneer times, but I had no idea that Richard came this far west. I do not know where or when he died.

Do any people in Lucas have ties to this family? Richard's wife was Permelia Deuel/Duel. Their children were Seneca D., Mary Ann, Jane, Sydney (who settled for a time in Lucas County), Edson, Eben, Adelia, and maybe Phebe, who might have married a Whitacre man. This list of children is probably not complete.

Any help appreciated!!!

J. Mitchell at 11mitchell@mchsi.com

I found Adam and his family in the 1880 census in Chariton. Its surprising as all other census records and family memory have him in the New York City area. Any suggestions on what might have brought a produce dealer in his late 20s, his wife, and three children under 10 out to Chariton from the east coast before the 1880 census? I have him back east by 1895.

Please respond to tfsnyder@charter.net

My Elizabeth Mitchell married a Naismith who is buried there, her parents were from Scotland. She has been found with a brother in a census in fulton county illinois and his name was Alexander Mitchell. Thier parents were Alexander Mitchell and Janet Elizabeth Simpson. Any connection. I notice that my Elizabeth and William Naismith had a daughter Jennet who is buried in Fry Hill and not to far from a Jennet Mitchell thought maybe there was a family connection there??? Just a guess.
Robin
Robin59@aeroinc.net

While researching my Lewis family, I ran across John L Lewis several times on Ancestry.com's historical newspaper articles. Try the Nonpareil archives for Council Bluffs, IA. I searched the dates 1940 through 1952 when I saw John L Lewis' name associated with unions & coal miners.

Bridget and Sarah Bradshaw, Chicago

My great-grandfather, John Bradshaw, born c.1845, Clare Island, County Mayo, Ire. came to Chicago around 1870 after living in Allamakee County, Iowa, when the family emigrated in 1854. His parents were Myles or Martin (I'm not sure which is correct) Bradshaw and Winnie (O'Malley) Bradshaw. He had three sisters (all born Clare Island, Mayo), Mary became a Nun (Sister Valeria) and went to Oakland, CA.

Bridget, born c. 1836, and Sarah, b. late 1840's were last listed in the 1880 Fed. Census for Chicago. They were both single and living with their brother (my great-grandfather), his wife, Kate (Grady) Bradshaw, and their mother Winnie Bradshaw. After that census, I've lost track of them. They could have married, or both could have died before the 1900 Census. I've searched that Census by first names, possible variations of first names and cannot find them anywhere.

If anyone would have any information on Bridget and Sarah Bradshaw in Chicago from 1880 on, I would be very grateful for the information.

Kate Bradshaw Davis

My grandfather, John Martin Bradshaw, had a cousin named Thomas F. Donahue who was married to a Bessie, and came from Pottsville, Pa. They moved to Chicago at some point. They were at my parents wedding in Chicago in 1940, according to the guest list. I have been unable to find the connection between the Donahue and Bradshaw families. My great-grandfather, also named John Bradshaw, came from Clare Island, County Mayo, Ire. Was your grandfather, Thomas Donahue known by the nickname "Jiggs"?

Would you know where in Ireland Patrick Donahue came from?
I have some photos from the 1930's of my Dad, his brother, my grandparents Bradshaw, and Thomas Donahue and I think one of his sons.

Hope this helps.

Kathleen Davis
