WASHINGTON, Iowa - Rev. E. Edward Philgreen, 78, Washington, died
Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006, in Washington, after a brief illness.
Dr. Robert Burkhart and the Rev. Julie Poulsen will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine. Memorials have been established for the new chapel at Halcyon House.
Rev. Philgreen was born July 15, 1928, in Topeka, Kan., the son of Ernest Phillip and Veda Urvilla Hart Philgreen. He married Pauline Sywassink on June 6, 1954, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Muscatine.
He graduated from Shawnee High School, Shawnee, Kan. He graduated from Baker University, Baldwin, Kan. with a bachelor of arts degree and received his master of divinity degree from Garrett Theological Seminary, Evanston, Ill. On May 30, 1954, he was ordained as an elder of the United Methodist Church.
He was a pastor in the United Methodist Church for 54 years, retiring in June 2005. He served the Rantool-Lane-Plumb Creek Church in Kansas and several churches in Iowa including Cantril Mount Sterling; Moulton, Richland Ollie; Kalona Riverside; Agency Riverview; Brooklyn; Knoxville; New London; Independence; Webster City; Cedar Falls; Wapello; and in Washington where he was visitation pastor for 12 years. He led six youth seminars from Iowa to the United Nations in New York and to Washington D.C. He served on various conference and district boards and committees with the United Methodist Church and was past president of Rotary.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Mark Philgreen and wife Terri of Manchester and their children, Ashley and Hannah Philgreen and Jessie and Robbie Sedain, Brian Philgreen of Friendswood, Texas and Duane Philgreen and wife Michelle of Manchester and their children, Cami, Calee, Caryssa and Caria Philgreen; a daughter, Joan Philgreen of Hampton; and a sister, Eunice Martin of Shawnee.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Floyd Philgreen; and a sister, Lillian Van Arsdale.
