Of the pioneers and early settlers of Walnut Township:
COPELAND: John Copeland came the same year as Gilkerson, neither remaining long in the township.
GILKERSON: A. William Gilkerson from Missouri, was the first settler, locating on section 18. Did not remain long.
"Of the permanent settlers in the township by the spring of 1867 there were fifteen families". --
1. BLUE: Mrs. Elizabeth Blue resided on and was the owner of the northeast quarter of section 8.
2. CLEM: Bartlet Clem came from Warren county, Indiana, to Linn county, Iowa, where he remained but a short time, when he again moved with his family, wife and seven children to Fremont county in 1856, settling in Walnut township on section 7.
3. CLEM: Henry Clem resided on the southeast of the northeast of section 5. Later Mr. Clem sold his farm and moved with his family to Fort Morgan, Colo., where he still resides.
4. DAVIS: Thomas Davis resided on the northeast of the northeast section 5. Later William Davis sold his farm and moved to Shenandoah, where he continued to reside until his death.
5. FARREL: C. G. Farrel was a resident on section 6.
6. FISHER: Henry Fisher settled on section 18 and continued to reside thereon until his death.
7. GORDON: Thomas Gordon resided on section 5.
8. HANKS: Cornelius C. Hanks (Honks?) came from New York state settling on the northwest quarter of the section 10. William Honks later sold his farm and moved with his family to Hay Springs, Nebraska, where he died in the year 1907.
9. HIGH: Ephraim High came from Licking county, Ohio, in the year 1856. He came to Iowa and to Fremont county purchasing and settling on the northwest quarter of section 9 and lived there until his death.
10. LEMMON: A Mr. Lemmon resided on the same section 6 as Farrel.
11. MERRITT: John Merritt came to Fremont county from Indiana about the year 1856, locating on section 17. William Merritt had the distinction of being the first settler to venture out on the open prairie in Walnut township where he reared a family of four boys and lived until his death.
12. PATTERSON: John Patterson was resident on the west one-half of southwest quarter of section 4.
13. PEASE: E. N. Pease, a farmer, came from Clark county, Indiana in 1853, locating on section 9 in Walnut township, Fremont county, on the 27th day of April, 1853. Mr. Pease taught the first school in Walnut township, and was prominent in the township for many years.
14. RIPLEY: Dr. Samuel Ripley came from New York state to Fremont county in 1853, entering and settling on the southwest quarter of section 4 in Walnut township where he resided with is family, wife and five children until his death, February 13, 1857.
15. SINGLETON: A. J. Singleton was the first of this number who came in the spring of 1852 from another part of the county locating on section 7. Isaac, a son of William Singleton, was the first male child born in the township.
