The following is from an article dated July 12, 1900:
[column headline] KILLED BY LIGHTNING
" Tuesday morning about 5 o'clock, during a severe electrical storm, the house occupied by Albert MORRIS, west of Berkley, was struck by lightning and his housekeeper, Miss Jennie L. VAN SLYKE, was instantly killed. The lightning struck the chimney, following down the roof to the southeast corner. The charge went entirely through the house, coming out on the northeast corner, doing considerable damage to the house. Miss VAN SLYKE was standing in the east door watching the storm and fell on her face just out of the door. Death was instantaneous, and the body on the face, neck and breast is very much marked from the effect of the lightning."
