The William and Frances Lewallen Family William Lewallen was born on October 12, 1829, in Bedford County, Virginia. He came to Highland County, Ohio, and married Frances Lowman there on September 11, 1850. She was born January 9, 1832. To this union were born five sons and five daughters, four daughters preceded William in death. In 1854, they moved to Knox County, Illinois. William enlisted in Company K, 11th Regiment of the Illinois Cavalry in 1861. He served only about ninety days before obtaining a medical discharge because of a wrist injury that did not heal properly. He reenlisted in 1864, and was in a hospital at Vicksburg at the end of the war for an intestinal disorder which apparently troubled him throughout his life, since that was what was listed on his death certificate. They moved from Illinois to Mahaska County, Iowa, in 1875. In 1880, they located on a farm north of Woodburn, where they lived until 1897. This farm was located on the west side of the road that goes past St. Mary‟s Cemetery, where it intersects with Highway 34. Forty acres of the farm were on the north side of what is now Highway 34 and the other forty was on the south side. This farm was near if not adjoining the Cochran farm and there were two marriages between the two families. They then moved into the town of Woodburn, where they lived until their deaths. Their home, as far as can be told from records, was on the northeast or southeast corner of Smith and Maple. William confessed his faith in Jesus in 1891, thus becoming a member of the Woodburn Church of Christ. He passed away on February 23, 1909, and Frances died on July 21, 1914, at Woodburn. Their funerals were both held at the Woodburn Christian Church, with burial at the Woodburn Cemetery.
