In reviewing a letter I received from a cousin 20 years ago I came across something that may be of interest to some family researchers. The cousin had inherited the belongings of an aunt that passed away in 1975 at the age of 96 who had lived in Osceola as a young girl. The aunt's name was Goldia Candace McCulloch (she married Frank Mayer of Minnesota in 1906). Following, she describes something she found in Goldia's belongings:

“I found a single sheet of lined paper which appears to me to be the entire class of a one-room school. The handwriting is very much alike for all of them – It could be a list written by one person or it could be a register signed by 32 persons all of whom had learned their penmanship from the same teacher: Bettie Oliver, Lura Benson, Goldia McCulloch, Eddie Oliver, Harry Fuller, Mary Black, Laicy Mason, Ida Benson, Grace Williams, L? Fuller, Drucie Benson, Winnie Dodge, Hattie Williams, Oren Williams, Bennie Oliver, Willie Snieder, Willard Mason, Berly Mason, Forance Hines, Rubey Hines, Regina Benson, Charly Williams, Roy Black, Elmor Massio, Lizzie Benson, Tommy Fuller, Willie Huffin, Harvy Fuller, Otto Black, Ricky Black, Mary Oliver, Vic Black.”

In researching families of Clarke County it appears that these children were all between the ages of 5 and 12 when the list was made sometime around 1890. If anyone has any further information I would like very much to hear from you. I realize some of the names are not spelled correctly but I wanted to maintain the names the way they were actually conveyed to me. I would particularly like to hear from any of the "Black" family descendants as Goldia (my aunt) was living with that family as a foster child.
