Both Frank & his sister have been found thanks to your help & another person who put obits of their siblings. I searched the Minnesota death records & found Francis Marion Hale died Dec. 3, 1948 in Cottonwood Co. Minnesota. That info didn't pop up for him on my tree. I wasn't sure it was the right person until one of the obits put his brother Frank's location in Mountain Lake, Minnesota which is in Cottonwood Co.

her Fred obit
Lake Park News February 18, 1960, page 1
Fred Hale, 91,
Rites Held Mon.
Frederick Thomas Hale was
one of nine Children born to
James Riley and Mary Ann Shoemaker
Hale near Floris, Wappelo
county, Iowa, on Oct. 27, 1868,
and passed away at his home in
Lake Park at 3:50 a. m. Friday,
Feb. 12 at the age of 91 years,
three months and 15 days.
He moved with his parents to
Montezuma where he grew to
manhood and learned the harness-
making trade. At the age
of 19 he went to Audubon and
worked at the harness trade for
three years. He worked at the
trade at different places a few
years and then farmed for six
years before he was married.
On Dec. 6, 1903 he was united
in marriage to Miss Etta Mae Coe
at Audubon. Eight children
blessed this home. They started
farming with his father-in-law
near Audubon and continued for
12 years there. In 1915 they
moved with their family to Lake
Park and farmed in this community
for 3 years.
Mr. and Mrs. Hale moved to
Lake Park in 1949 to their home
near the lake shore so he could
indulge in his favorite pastime of
fishing.
They celebrated their golden
wedding in Dec. 1953, and on
March 10, 1954 his wife passed
away.
The older daughter Ila Hale has
kept house for her father until
his death. He had been bedfast
the last two weeks and the
thread of life grew weaker as he
peacefully left this life early on
Friday morning.
He had known many hardships
(continued on page 8)
but had great fortitude, and
stoutly maintained that he could
walk the five blocks up town
each day until the last few
months. He was a fine father
raised a family of which he was
justly proud. He was a gentleman
in the truest sense.
He leaves two daughters and
five sons who mourn his passing:
Ila Hale at home; Harold of
Frazee, Minn.; Donald of Mountain
Lake, Minn.; Maurice of
Lake Park; Charles of Jackson,
Minn.; Dorance of Spirit Lake;
and. Helen, Mrs. Bernard Lynn,
of Spirit Lake. One son Clyde
passed away in 1956. He leaves
11 grandchildren and 5 great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on
Monday, Feb. 15 at the Presbyterian
church in Lake Park at
3:30 p. m. with Rev. Marvin
Kruse officiating. The Knowles-
Leyson Funeral Home was in
charge.
Karolyn Ritterholz and Mrs.
Lynn Clark Jr. sang ''The Old
Rugged Cross" and "In the Sweet
Bye and Bye," accompanied by
Mrs. Marvin Kruse.
Pall bearers were George
Kumba, Virgil Thorn, William
McFarland, Henry Walker,, Jake
Kumba of Superior, and Victor
McCarty of Melvin.
Burial was in the family lot in
Silver Lake cemetery at Lake
Park.

then I found their sisters obit:
Spirit Lake Beacon August 18, 1927, page 9
LAKE PARK
The funeral of Mrs. Emma Hale
was held last Wednesday afternoon at
the Presbyterian church, conducted by
the pastor, Rev. R. E. Jones, and burial
was made in Silver Lake cemetery,
beside her husband.
The funeral was largely attended by
relatives, neighbors and old time
friends and the floral offerings were
many and beautiful which attested to
the love and esteem in which the deceased
was held. The church was
tastefully arranged with white and lavendar
drapes and potted and cut flowers.
Favorite hymns were sang by a
quartet and neighbors acted as pall
bearers. Will Reed and daughter, Mrs.
Oscar Hegre of Montrose, S. D., accompanied
the body here, also Mrs.
Fred Hale, of Lake Park, and Miss
Cora Hale of Aurelia, who were called
to Montrose by her illness. Emma L.
Hale was born in Herman, Ill., June
22, 156 and passed away at Montrose
S. D., August 8, 1927, at the age of
71 years, 1 month and 16 days. She
was one of seven children, born to
James and Mary Hale, who came to
Iowa with her parents in 1865 and her
home has been in this state, and the
last seventeen years she has been
a resident of Dickinson county.
She was married to James Z. Reed at
Montezuma, Iowa, March 22, 1877 and spent
19 years together with her husband
who preceded her in death, April 16
1926. Since the death of her husband
she has made her home with her brothers
and sister and was visiting at
Montrose at the Will Reed home when
the end came, her sickness being of
short duration and her death was
a shock to her friends.
Mrs. Reed was a quiet unassuming
woman, living a very devotional Christian
life for many years. She made
many friends by her kindly manner and
interest in all who needed help and
sympathy. She was a member of the
Lake Park Presbyterian church and
attended when able and was a great
worker in the Masters vineyard for
many years until health and
circumstances prevented. She
leaves to mourn her going one sister
and three brothers,
Cora Hale, Frank Hale and Charles
of Aurelia and Fred Hale of Lake
Park and a host of other relatives and
friends.
On the shore of the moonlit ocean
Stands something I cannot say
But it seems I can hear someone calling
Someone so far away
Too far for me to answer
Too far for me to call
But some day I shall go there
For 'tis there we shall meet them all.
—A Friend.

Rev. Lloyd Scheerer was in
charge of the services. Interment
took place in the Aurelia cemetery.
Cora L. Hale was born at Montezuma,
Iowa, June 7, 1872, and passed
from this life at the home of her
brother, Frank Hale, at Aurelia, Iowa,
Tuesday morning, February 25, 1936,
at the age of 63 years, 8 months, and
18 days.
She moved with her parents to
Audubon county as a child and lived
there a number of years before
making her home with her brother
Frank. At the age of twenty-two
she joined the Viola Evangelical
church in Audubon county where she
remained a member the rest of her
life.
She was one of a family of seven
children, three sisters having preceded
her in death. Surviving her
are three brothers, Charles and Frank
of Aurelia and Fred of Lake Park,
Iowa, also several nieces and nephews.
Although she was not privileged to
have a home of her own, her life was
spent in making other homes happy.
To those of her loved ones she was
unspeakably dear, and will be held
by them in undying affection ,and
imperishable remembrance. Nor will
she be forgotten by those who have
been privileged to call her friend.
We can not believe that she is gone
from us. Nor is she, for her immortal
presence will live in the hearts
of her loved ones, to cheer in trouble,
encourage in difficulty, and influence
for good.

This 1940 census seems to fit by checking Frank's wife & son. I don't believe the 1940 was indexed yet when I posted original message. Your listing of the California death index isn't the correct one. His mother's maiden name was Shoemaker. The 1900 census says he was born Aug 1876. I found nothing on Find A Grave in Iowa or Minnesota under either Frank or Francis.

I think her parents are John Smith and Ellen Lawson. Ruth was born in Green County, Ohio on 22 Dec 1828. She died in Johnson County, Iowa 1909. She married Charles Nelson Smith (1831-1911) on 9 June 1853 in Johnson County, IA. They had 6 children, the oldest was Harriet (Hattie). I am a descendant of their youngest child, Charles Nelson Smith II.

My family has always believed that Ruth was Native American. Recently, my family believe that Ruth's mother was Cherokee and her father was white.

Any clarification on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Patty,

I do not have much information. I remember your mother very well as well as her brothers.

I live in Washington DC. My brother Simon still lives in Worthington. And my sister Karen (Koster) Campbell lives in Kansas. I have a family booklet put together by Wilma(Koster) Bruchmann. Wilma was uncle Bill Kosters Daughter. They lived in Tyler,Mn as kids. Wilma married and moved to Denver. This is a great book, put together in Sept of 1984. It traces the family line back to 1651. It shows Frank Mouw (born 1/18/1878) as the child of Willen Mouw.

Send me an email: hkoster@erols.com

I am wondering if you are still on Ancestry.com. If so, I'd like to hear from you regarding your information on the Mouw family. Fran Mouw was my great-grandmother's brother.
My great-grandparents immigrated to the states afer Frank Mouw. After living in Iowa a few years, they settled in Edgerton, MN and ultimately lived with my grandparents in Worthington, MN. My great grandparents did not die until I was a teenager so I knew them quite well. We have a family book that goes back to the 1500's. Although, I'm thinking from your post that you are more interested in Gr. Uncle Frank's wife's family line? Feel free to contact me.
Sincerely, Patricia Crawford

You are a good researcher and have helped me in the past.

I have all of that information but am needing to know where Alice was born. That might help me to know where mother and father were married and then I might find out where mother (Teresa) was born.

I put the memorials of all of the family on Find A Grave including Teresa's obit.

Mary Ellen

The "Salsbery" Photo studio was owned by Phil Salsbury. I am not certain of the total length of his time in business, but do know that he was a very active photographer in the 1940s through the 1960s. His studio was located on the east side of South 2nd Street (Hwy 59) in Cherokee.

Thanks, I have that information as well. The problem is that the information on the census is not correct. Her birth place was not Iowa. The surname Bird is the family that took her in off the orphan train. I havent been able to find out if she was ever adopted or an indentured servant. There are a copule of stories that have gone thru the family. One I heard was that Ann McNally fell in love with her after going to the train station to watch the orphan train go thru. Another is that she filled out a form at church because she recently lost her husband and was lonely. Also somewhere some mentioned she knew she had a brother that was taken off hte train earlier than her.

I live in Liberty Township, Cherokee Co. Iowa. Liberty is the next Township East of Marcus Township. I have a listing of people buried in Liberty Township Cemetery. There are several Olsons buried in Liberty Cemetery. The information I have was taken from the markers and in most cases the female name would be her married name.

soandso@netins.net

I'm looking for some information on my great-grandfather, Olaf Olson's family. Olaf, his parents, Andrew and Hilma, and his older brother immigrated from Sweden about 1882 and settled in Marcus Township in Cherokee County for about 10 years. My research suggests his brother, Andrew, died in Cherokee County in 1886, and at least six younger siblings – Anna, Charles, Hilma, Hilda, Agnes and Beda, were born there. Beda died before the age of three, but I'm not sure if it was in Cherokee County or not. The 1885 Iowa census suggests two uncles of Olaf, Lars and Nels, were living with them as well.
Any information anyone has would be much appreciated!
