Kathy, I would like a little more information about your William
Scherffius ancestor. I believe the Captain/Mayor Henry
Scherffius had a brother named William, and 2 sons named William H.Scherffius Henry and Emily
Scherffius' first born was a son whom they named William H. He was born in Oct of 1865, and he died Nov 20 1865. The 2nd William H. was the couple's 4th child. I know a little about him. His wife was Roxie
Hinson. If you are related to this William I would like to exchange other information with you.
Henry
Scherffius was born near
Sandon, Germany, 6 June 1838. He immigrated with his family to the US, settling in
Galveston,
Texas. He was the 3rd child of John
Anton and Anna Barbara Hessert. He died 22 Nov. 1894 in
Houston,
Texas, USA. He was a blockade runner during the Civil War. He married Emily Branard of
Galveston 5 May 1864. They were married in
Harris County, probably
Houston. They had 9 children. Henry
Scherffius became
Mayor of
Houston in 1890. Emily was born ca. 1847 in
Galveston, and died 13 Nov. 1889, in
Houston. Both Henry and Emily are buried in
Glenwood Cemetery in
Houston,
Texas. Some of their children are buried with them.
Some of my sources of information are Wave of the Gulf by Jesse Ziegler; books and articles by W. T. Block, Historian; newspaper articles; cemetery records, and the
Harris County marriage records. If you would like more detailed information you may contact me at my e-mail address. I look forward to hearing from you.
