Augusta (Burow) Scherffius, who lived in Blackhawk County, IA, was my great-grandfather's sister. They came to the US in 1866 from Prussia when she was 16 and settled in Sauk Center, MN. I don't know anything about her husband, but when my great-grandfather died in 1935, she was living in Cedar Falls, IA. The Burows did have relatives (surname Knebel) that went from MN to TX, with Waco, Galveston, and Austin mentioned.

I do not have a connection to Black Hawk County, but I have a Scherffius in 1866 Houston, Texas. A Henry scherffius married Emily Branard. He apparently went into business with his wife's brother, George A. Branard in Houston. The two names appear in an ad in the Dallas Herald newspaper Nov. 3, 1866. I am related to George A. Branard. The 1870 Harris County Census shows Henry, Emily, and a 2 year old, George H., living in Houston, Tx. It also shows Henry was born in Prussia. He was shown to be 31 in 1870. Are any of these names in your ancestry line?

Cindy, My only connection to these postings is with the Henry Scherffius family in Texas. Henry Scherffius of Houston was born June 9, 1838, at Seibeldinder, South of Rhine, Bavaria near Sandon, Germany. He married Emily Branard in Houston on May 5, 1864. Emily Branard was the sister of George A. Branard, my grandfather. Henry Scherffius was Mayor of Houston, Tx. in 1890. He died Nov. 22, 1894, and is buried in Houston's Glenwood Cemetery. Henry and Emily had 9 children. More information and resource material available by request.

Thank you for replying to my post. I guess I mislead you with the subject line. I was replying to a former post that had Augustus Scherffius as a subject line. I don't have him in my family either.
I am interested in information about Henry Scherffius who lived in Houston and was the Mayor for a time.
I have quite a bit of information about other members of his family, but not him.
His brother, William H. was my ancestor.
Anything you can share with me would be appreciated.
Thanks again, Kathy

Kathy, I would like a little more information about your William Scherffius ancestor. I believe the Captain/Mayor Henry Scherffius had a brother named William, and 2 sons named William H.Scherffius Henry and Emily Scherffius' first born was a son whom they named William H. He was born in Oct of 1865, and he died Nov 20 1865. The 2nd William H. was the couple's 4th child. I know a little about him. His wife was Roxie Hinson. If you are related to this William I would like to exchange other information with you.
Henry Scherffius was born near Sandon, Germany, 6 June 1838. He immigrated with his family to the US, settling in Galveston, Texas. He was the 3rd child of John Anton and Anna Barbara Hessert. He died 22 Nov. 1894 in Houston, Texas, USA. He was a blockade runner during the Civil War. He married Emily Branard of Galveston 5 May 1864. They were married in Harris County, probably Houston. They had 9 children. Henry Scherffius became Mayor of Houston in 1890. Emily was born ca. 1847 in Galveston, and died 13 Nov. 1889, in Houston. Both Henry and Emily are buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Houston, Texas. Some of their children are buried with them.
Some of my sources of information are Wave of the Gulf by Jesse Ziegler; books and articles by W. T. Block, Historian; newspaper articles; cemetery records, and the Harris County marriage records. If you would like more detailed information you may contact me at my e-mail address. I look forward to hearing from you.
