Need help locating home in photo (possibly in Fontanelle)

The photo I'm posting was taken by my Dad in August of 1978. He wrote on the photo's back that this home belonged to Thomas Perry Brown who died in 1951. All he remembers now was that the home was in or near Fontanelle. I would like anyone's help in finding out what the current address of this home is so I can write it on the photo's back. Being it was taken in 1978 it's possible that this home no longer stands.
Is there anyone willing to lookup the Adair County birth records on microfilm? I hear that the LDS family history centers have some early birth records. The name I'm looking for is Fay O. Brown and he was born ca. 1907 near Fontanelle.

VJMorgan aka Purpledragon11,
I had to go back and read all the previous posts to see where you got the Wilbar Fiske RICE (Massachusetts) reference; I see that ELLinSpain had briefly included this information at the end of his/her 10/24 post.

But no, as a matter of fact I am looking for information on the Wilber Fisk RICE family of Iowa. I am a descendant of his as well (he is my great-great-great grandfather). Judging by your last name (Morgan?), I am guessing that his daughter Ida was your great-grandmother? My family descends from Ida’s eldest brother, Merrills Cleveland RICE and spouse Mary BUCKLEY.

Merrills C. and brother Avery moved from Iowa to Aberdeen, Grays Harbor, Washington and raised their families there. I am assuming this is the Uncle Avery you speak of? My grandmother remembers Avery and Pearl very well…I will ask her if she knows anything of the violins. Did you visit Aberdeen in 1963, or did the family meet in another location?

I would like to ask you some more questions on your knowledge of our shared ancestry, current family, and of what you remember from your 1963 visit. I don’t have your email address but you can certainly contact me at mine, see below:

peters.william@frontier.com

I hope to hear from you in the near future.

Regards,
Bill
Just a note in passing - Wilbar Fiske Rice (b.1836)(of Massachusetts) is NOT the same person as Wilber Fisk Rice (b.1837)(of Iowa, Illinois & New York). The parents' names are quite different (Thomas/Absala v. Avery/Aurilla).

First, Wilber (of Iowa, etc) is listed with his parents Avery & Aurilla Rice in 1850, 1855(NY) and 1860 censuses. In 1860, The family is in Sparta, Knox Xo, IL. They seem to have live in Wataga. Wilber's wife Lovilla (Adeline Scott) is listed with them in the 1860 census, although the census taker shows her name as "Laura" and Ancestry indexes it as "Saurn". Both Wilber & Lovilla were born in Allegany County, New York. Second, Wilber & Lovilla had fourteen children over the next 28 years; the first 4 children were born in Knox Co, IL, followed by 9 children born in Marion Co, IA, and 1 child born in Adair Co, IA. Finally, in December 1886 (when Wilbar (of Mass was getting married in Mass), Wilber (of Iowa) was living with his wife and 8 then surviving children in Adair County, Iowa. It would be difficult to imagine him taking off for Massachusetts where he had no ties to get married to a woman to whom he clearly wasn't married later in his life. And then there's the fact that Lovilla had a child by him in Iowa after this date, is listed in the 1900 census with him, and survived him (as his widow) by 27 years.

The above leads me to believe that we are talking about two different men here. In my past research, I've noticed that quite often parents named children after prominent people if they didn't use or had exhausted the store of family names. It happens that Dr. Willbur Fisk (1792-1839) was a prominent Methodist minister, educator and theologian. Avery Rice was prominent in the local Methodist community in Independence Township, Allegany Co, NY. In fact, Avery presided over the organization of the Independence M.E. Church on 1 July 1837, 13 days after his son Wilber Fisk Rice was born. It's not difficult to connect the dots here and come up with the source of the child's name. I would hypothesize a similar source for the Massachusetts man's name.

Please feel free to contact me off-board if you have further questions.

VJMorgan
(gg-granddaughter of Wilber Fisk Rice of Iowa)

PS - Does anyone in the family still have any of Uncle Avery's hand made violins? I saw them when we visited with Avery & Pearl in 1963.

Re: RICE of Jasper, Adair, Guthrie, or Linn Counties

I found a couple of obituaries for Lovilla A. Rice and a wedding story regarding her daughter, Violet and I will attach them. They come from Newspaper Archives and the quality is poor. The Atlantic Public Library has microfilms of those issues of and could probably provide better copies.
I also have a number of other small newspaper clippings that mentions Lovilla's sister, and a couple of her other daughters hubsband's names. I saved them into a 2010 Word document and can email it as an attachment if you would like to view them. Again, the quality isn't always the best. I think at least one of the obits for Lovilla mentions that her husband died in 1900. Most of the clippings are from the Wiota section of the various newspapers. Wiota is a small town in Cass County and Atlantic is the county seat of Cass County. You can contact me at: stevejensen@cfu.net

RICE of Jasper, Adair, Guthrie, or Linn Counties

I am looking for descendants and ancestors of Avery RICE (b ~1797, New York). I think his mother may have been Lydia RUSSEL (b ~1783) of Massachusetts. Avery’s wife was Arvella (maiden?) and she was born in either New York or Connecticut sometime around 1800.

/*1st GENERATION*/
Avery and Arvella RICE had at least two children, Filinda (~1832, NY) and Wilbur Fisk (June 1837, NY) and lived somewhere in Allegeny County.

/**2**/
Wilbur Fisk RICE married Lovilla Adeline SCOTT (b 10/9/1843), also of New York’s Allegeny County. The couple moved to the Galesburg area of Knox County in Illinois and had two sons, Merrills Cleveland (~1861) and Wallace (~1862). Sometime after that the family moved to Iowa and may have lived in Adair, Guthrie, Linn, and/or Jasper Counties, from what I have collected. In Iowa, they had five daughters: Ida (~1870), Nella (~1874), Mary F (~1876), Orphy (~1880) and Violet S (~1888), as well as two more sons, Avery Madison (~1878) and Arthur S (~1882).

/***3***/
In 1884, Merrills Cleveland RICE married Mary BUCKLEY (~1860, Illinois) in Jasper County, Iowa. There, the couple had at least nine children, Robert (~1885), James (~1886), Ernest Harrison (~1889), Cora A (~1890), Merrills Arthur (~1890), Minnie O (~1892), May L (~1894), Lydia “Peggy” (~1897), and Manda L (~1900). Between 1900 and 1904 the family moved to Aberdeen, Grays Harbor Co., WA and had another daughter, Lovilla Stella (~1904).

/****4****/
Lovilla Stella RICE had a son with Cecil JOHNSON in 1926 named Ronald (aka “Stormy”), but Cecil died around 1930. Stormy was adopted by Lovilla’s second husband, George John STURM (b 1907, Hoquiam, WA). George and Lovilla had another son, John Merrills (aka “Bucky”) in 1933, and two daughters Barbara Jean (1935) and Sharon Eileen (~1937). The family resided in Aberdeen, Washington.
He was born in Iowa and she was born in Canada of english lineage. My sister was given a second name of Faye after her and dad and joh worked as mechanics in a garage in Adair. I seem to remember a car dealership but not sure what make. It may have been owed by a person who's wife was kin to my mother. This is all from and old brain that is going back to when I was 5, 6, 7, years old in the early 1940's. I would like to know what happen to Johnnie and Faye.

Leon

I was so excited to find this post. I've recently started our family history and was having difficulty finding anything on this line--my grandmother, Ida Caroline McClure (m. Charlie Clauson) would not talk about her family, even though I asked her frequently when I was a curious girl visiting her daily. I would like to receive all the information I can get, and, in return, can tell you about the Idaho relatives.

The library in Guthrie Center has some newspaper obits in notebooks. They don't have them all however but might be another place for you to check. He could have easily died in nearby Adair or Dallas Counties or even in Des Moines if he had gone there for medical treatment. Perhaps the South Oak Grove Cemetery has the death date or at least the burial date in their records.

I am trying to find either an obituary or death notice for my gggrandfather, Charles L. Cotton. He lived in Stuart, Iowa and died in 1938. His wife was Hattie,(Harriet), Tillotson Cotton. I contacted the Guthrie County Clerk and was told I had to have an exact date of death in order for them to search, the year and name was not enough information.

A volunteer from the Guthrie County site went to the court house and said there was no record and to try Adair County. Suggestions on where to go next would be appreciated.

Hi Mr Bob,
Thank You for clearing that bit up for me. This is my first venture into researching in Adair Co. So this is all new ground for me. Is There a Church near Hill of Zion Cemetery? I see in my obituary's for Thomas & Mary Greenlief/Clark 1950ish, that the services were held at the Hill of Zion Congregational Church.

Some time between 1925(after her husband James Said died) and 1930 she moved from Harrison County, Iowa to Adair County, Iowa. In the 1930 Adair, Adair, Iowa Census she was a housekeeper for Leroy Curtis. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

West Family Iowa Pictures

I purchased a box of pictures at our local flea market in Diamond Springs CA. Some of the names on the pictures are Robert West, Gertrude "Nan" Craft, Hannah Gertrude Craft West, Frances Margret West, Lewis A. Pope and Florence M West, most say for the W. W. West family They all appear to be from the late 1800's or early 1900's. I would love to get these back to someone who is related to this family, There are many pictures with nothing written on them and they are all in excellent shape. Some of these were taken in Greenfield, Iowa.

Thanks
Dave Swart
If you think this person could be of intereste to you let me know. Great grandmother Kearns was born in Sculcoates England which is now part of Hull England. She came with her mother and several siblings to Scott Co Iowa around 1856. The writing is on the right side of the picture but it is hard to make out.

I need the obituary for Mrs. Lucille N. Harter if possible. She died 29 April 2006 in Orient, Adair County, Iowa. She is the daughter of Nellie Byron (Perry) Lewis, who is the niece of my great-great grandmother. I tried getting to obituary from the US Obituary Collection on ancestry.com;however, it stated that the page was not found. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
