My connection is through Betsy WARSTLER WETZEL. I descend from her sister, Caroline WARSTLER MOORE. Their parents were Henry WARSTLER/WUERSTLER and Catherine BOWER. Henry was b 1789 in MD, Catherine was b 1792 in PA They married in 1812 in MD and soon after moved to Stark Co., OH where Henry's father and brothers had already re-located. It is the WARSTLER line that I am interested in. Actually, it's Catherine BOWER because I can't find her parents so I have been researching all of her children's lines to see if anyone has more info on her.

I suggest two avenues for you, 1 being the Whitley County Historical Society, which has a lot of stuff already on-line but will have more in house. 2 Contact the library in South Whitley, they have a lot of info there as well.
I have a 1862 plat map of Cleveland Township, I see Daniel Reelhorn with 80 acres in Section 34. Closest school houses are on B. Cullen (sec 33) place about a 1/4 mile away and one on the same road about 1 3/4 miles away on John Sickafoose land (sec 35), he was the postmaster for the So. Cleveland P.O., I know some of the Sickafoose were school teachers, but I don't know where. e-mail me and I'll send the map in pdf. sharplongancestors@yahoo.com

Reelhorn School

Looking for information on the history of the Reelhorn School in Cleveland Twp., Whitley Co., Indiana. When was it founded? By whom? For whom was it named? Is it still in operation? Is it a public or private school?

My ggg-grandfather Jesse Reelhorn and his wife Rebecca Bishop Reelhorn and Jesse's brother Daniel went west from Ohio in the late 1840s. They settled in what became Cleveland Twp., Whitley Co., Indiana. My gg-grandfather George Walter Reelhorn was born there in 1853.

I wondered, since the name Reelhorn is so unusual-- apparently a direct literal translation from the German "Haspelhorn" by Jesse's and Daniel's father in a misguided attempt to Americanize-- whether the Reelhorn School was named after one of my family members. (And if so, why. Jesse died in the Civil War--was it because he was a war hero? Did he, his wife/widow, or brother donate land or money to build the school? Did Daniel or his wife become a local teacher of some repute or the first principal of the school?)

Hopefully someone who knows the school or has access to a written history can enlighten me! Thanks in advance!

B.J.,this is a different Zachariah Garrison, but is a descendant of your Zachariah. My Zachariah was born 24 October 1868 in Columbia City, Whitley Indiana, to William Garrison and Stacy Lavina Graves. William was the son of your Zachariah Garrison and 1st wife Mary McCrea, he then later married Ann Ruckman. My Zachariah married Alice"Allie"Alberta Ruckman on 5 April 1890 Whitley Co. Indiana. Allie died 28 June 1927 Whitley Co. Indiana, Zachariah died 12 Feb 1954. They are buried in South Park Cemetery, Columbia Twp. I was hoping to get in touch with any of their descendants to gather info , like obits, etc; that they might have. I do have a couple of Allie when she was older.
Bobbi I have your Zachariah and Ann Ruckman being married on 16 Feb 1836 in Richland Co., Ohio. I have Ann being born in Virginia the daughter of Peter Ruckman from Maryland and Sarah Lee from Virginia. This is another place where the Garrisons come into my husbands Ruckman line. Ann Ruckman's brother Isaac Ruckman is my husbands g-g-great grandfather. I have Ann and about all of her siblings being married in Richland Co. Ohio. I didn't have Sarah's parents names. So that gives me something to investigate.
Bobbi, could the wedding date of 27 April 1767 possibly be Zachariahs 1st marriage to Mary McCrea? You mentioned the name of Egolf. Looks like two of Zachariah and Anna's children married Egolfs. Well I hope I answered your questions, let me know if you have more.

Several have him as dying 23 Apr 1933 in Toledo, Ohio. But they have him listed as Jack Stanley Jackson. (I bet it's very likely the same person). Seems it would be difficult to be working in the 1940's unless he faked his death. Perhaps checking Lucas County Deaths might be in order. The Ohio Deaths online only go to 1932 and then a gap. Lucas County Deaths online are only up to 1897.

This may not be the correct John Gtant, but the article I found of that date says he was struck on "Road 31 near Columbus, Indiana and his mother, Mary was notified of his death." The age given for this man was 51 and stated that he was from North City. Columbus, Indiana is in Bartholomew County. If this agrees with the age of your John Grant, you might try there.

Hope this sheds some light:

http://members.tripod.com/debmurray/whitley/whitbioref-5.htm...

ELIAKIM MOSHER, one of the earliest settlers of Whitley County, was born in Oswego County, N. Y., August 29, 1830, and was one of a family of six children born to Benona and Cynthia (Pierce) Mosher, who came here in 1841, and settled on the farm where our subject now resides. The father hewed into the forest, erected a log house and moved in March 3, 1841, and began clearing the farm. The nearest neighbors were Indians, but they proved themselves friendly and were a great help to the family. Our subject well remembers the removal of the Indians from the county and many incidents connected with them prior to that time. His father died when he was fourteen years of age, and in consequence he did not receive a very good education, and yet, although a farmer, he can turn his hand to various employments. His farm comprises 160 acres, of which 100 are under cultivation. December 25, 1852, he married Catharine Mowrey, who died January 19, 1870, leaving a family of eight children, viz., Adam B., Francis S., Charlie F., Michael H., Clara J., Abram H., Julia A. and Clarinda. November 21, 1871, our subject married his present wife, Mrs. Rhua Grimes. He is a member of the Methodist Church of Columbia City.

"Counties of Whitley and Noble, Indiana. Historical and Biographical" by Weston A.
Thanks for the reply. I'll try to confirm it. I don't know of any Missouri connections, but I don't know why he ended up in So Whitley either. All 3 of his child were split up to be raised by different relatives. Although they attempted to find out what happened to him they were never successful. My mother is the only surviving child. His WWII draft registration shows him living/working in So Whitely, IN in '42.
My grandfather disappeared after the death of his wife, Dewey Bailiff, in the early 1930s. He was born in Astabula, OH on 13 Sept 1887. He lived in Toledo 1910-1930. I was able to trace him to New Whitley in the 1940's. He was working for a company called Hoosier Hoops. Does anyone have any info on this man?

The So Whitley connection in the 40's is unquestionable. His signature and birthdate/place match. I do know that he did go by the nickname of Jack though. Thanks for mentioning the possiblity that he may have records under that name. It gives me a chance to find a new lead. His father assumed the name Jackson following being stripped of his citizenship and deported to Canada from England after being convicted of crimes against the realm. The real family name is lost and any crime details. Not too surprising that his son would choose to disappear. This short list of Jackson's are a tough group to track.

Thanks for your time Cheryl. It is interesting see Hoosier Hoops sitting right there at the RR tracks and knowing he had always worked for the RR. Makes me wonder if there is some connection with him ending up there. I figured the business was gone, since I couldn't find it on the internet. My mother will be happy to see where her father was in her teenage yrs. Your fears can always lead you to imagine the worse. At least she knows now that he in a good place and had work in the 40's.
I'll also check the other localities near So Whitley.
I spoke with my mother and she confirmed that Florence Salisbury was her aunt. Clyde and Flo showed up to visit her as a child and in fact kept in contact with my mother into the 70's. My mother had no idea Aunt Flo knew where her brother was. It seems to have been an unwritten rule that nobody spoke of him.He was a loved father and my mother was always afraid he ended up in a pauper's grave.

Thought I'd see what I could turn up for you on this. I love a conundrum, and it’s fun to follow someone else’s line every now and then.

I located the cemetery record for the Frank Jackson who died in Henry co, MO. It doesn’t look like it’s your guy. This guys’ folks are Lee & Elizabeth Jackson, and it looks like your guy’s folks are James & Annie. Here’s what I found:
__________
Laurel Oak Cemetery
JACKSON, Frank - b: Sep 13 1887 - d: Sep 26 1978 - son of Lee C. & Elizabeth COOPER JACKSON - bur: Lot:1159 Gr:C
__________
So although it’s no help to finding him, at least it’s a wild goose chase you can cross off your to-do list!

I do have an idea why he ended up in South Whitley, though. His WWI record lists him as a switchman for Toledo’s New York Central RR in 1917. As a matter of fact he was a RR man his whole life, even in WWI from the looks of it. On an OLD map of South Whitley (called Springfield then), one of the RRs going through town is listed as NYC & St Louis. My guess is he stayed with the same RR his whole life and ended up in South Whitley by taking a job on the NYC, then for some reason he became unable to continue the job so he got a different job in town at the hoop factory.

I did not locate him in any South Whitley cemetery transcriptions, however I would suggest an email to the South Whitley Library. They have a nice, if small, genealogy dept. and I hear they have obituary cards and I know they’ve got all the old newspapers for South Whitley. (Note: I did not locate his obit in the obit index for the Columbia City papers, which is Whitley county’s main paper, but didn't have access to S Whitley papers & obits.) The librarians might also have information on when the hoop factory closed up shop. A third possibility is to ask them about city directories from the 40’s & 50’s.

If he didn’t follow the RR out of South Whitley, and he didn’t stay in town, you might try Huntington in Huntington county or North Manchester in Wabash county. They are the closest other “big towns” to South Whitley since it looks like he didn’t come on up to Columbia City.

The other possibility is to check out this Mrs Clyde Salisbury listed on his WWII record as the person who will always know where he is. Her name turns out to be Florence A and she lived & died in Beaumont, TX. My guess is she’s his sister Florence, who shows up in one of his early census records.

Two other possibilities to work on, but I don’t know how to do it. First, he was a RR man. He might have retired and pulled pension. I know there’s a whole mini-community of genealogists who work with RR records. A google on railroad genealogy might be useful. Second, along those same thoughts, he was a soldier at least during WWI. Check out veteran’s gravesites listings or possibly pension records. Perhaps something will turn up.

I will keep playing with it for awhile and if I turn anything else up, I’ll pass it along. It’s fun to look at new names and dates for awhile!

Cheryl Druley
Re: Lost Grandfather- Frank Stanley (Jack) Jackson

I stumbled onto a tidbit for you. Don't get too excited... it's just a photo showing Hoosier Hoops. But I thought you might like to see it.

While searching for Frank last week, I went to the South Whitley Library's website and just for fun responded to their mystery photo while I was there. Ha... they posted my answer on the site! (Didn't expect that.) Anyway, I got an email from the librarian today giving me more info on other buildings in the photo and Hoosier Hoops is in it.

Here is the link to the photo: http://www.swhitley.lib.in.us/genealogy.htm#PhotoMonth

And below is a copy of the email I received from the librarian (note: she should have said "left to right," not "right to left.") From her letter, it looks like Hoosier Hoops is the building just left of the white RR tower, built into the curve of the tracks.

I emailed her to ask if they had any info on when HH closed up shop or if they had any directories from the 40s or 50s. Will let you know if I get an answer.

I don't think he died in Whitley county. I can't find him on any cemetery or obituary searches anywhere in this county. But I will keep playing with this. It's nice to get a fresh set of names & dates to work with every now and then. I start getting bleary-eyed after looking at my own charts for so long, haha.

Cheryl

Dear Cheryl,

Thank you for your reponse to our picture. We are so glad that people our reading our new web-site, and helping us with information. I am fairly new to our library and am trying to get more information about South Whitley.

I have some new information you might be interested to have for your records.
Center: (right to left) Hoosier Hoop Co.; Vandalia switching tower (for the Vandalia and Nickle Plate R.R.) crossover. Train on the Nickel Plate R.R.; Vandalia tracks and depot; with So. Whitley Commons at south side.

Center of picture: Prince A. Edwards sawmill; box cars on Nickle Plate and just east of them Gandy Elevator. South of the Nickle Plate is Atoz Printing Co.; and Grip Nut Co. (former Springfield Academy).

Far center is the Grip Nut Co. wooden water tower.

Thank you so much for your information and keep a watch we are going to have more old So, Whitley pictures. Come and visit our local history section of the library.

Joyce Hite
So Whitley Library, genealogy and local history

I am kind of confused. I am from Columbia City Indiana (whitley county) as well and my family info is a bit different.

I also come from Zachariah Garrison. But our records show that he married Anna Lee Ruckman not Alice. Is it possible that Anna and Alice are the same person?

Garrison and Ruckman married on April 27,1767 possibly in Maryland?????

My mothers records show that Ann Lee Ruckman comes from the famous and popular Virgina Lee family. Anna Lee Ruckman stems from Henry Lee the 2nd and Lucy Grymes the popular Lowland Beauty that President George Washington was in love with. These are also the same grandparents General Robert E Lee comes from.

For me the Lee names goes from Lee to Ruckman to Garrison to Braddock to Rucker.

Zachariah had a son named Peter who had a daughter named Frances who married a Braddock man.

I forget how and where but the whitley county surname of Egolf also plays a part in the Garrison family line as well I think? Not sure how that one comes about.

Just by looking at the family tree there are many many distant cousins in whitely county.

BJ Rucker ( Bobbi Jo)

Thank you for the info. I checked with my mother and she says Ann Ruckman was born in the year 1813 so the marriage date I listed is way off base. I thank you for your info it gives me some good stuff to work with.

I suggest that you write to or call the South Whitley Public Library, to see if he has an obit. They have an obit collection of every obit ever printed in Whitley County plus some that have been donated from other papers. These are laminated and in alphabetical files. Andrea

I am responding to this from the Burden side... we have just started to try and find information out about our history, which is an adventure, My Grandfather was Earl Elzworth BURDEN a brother to Silas we believe... He was of Mulatto descent and we do know that his father Was Steven Burden and Mother Martha Jane (Stubblefield-we believe) he was born in 1892 and had a younger brother Roy E Burden.... I would love to find out some more information :)
