In the 1850 census for Wells Co, INdiana there is an Allen Redding, age 40, born in Carolina, and a William Redding, age 43, born in Carolina. George William Redding was 35, born in North Carolina. He is in the Allen Co. census. They all lived in Zanesville,IN which is partly in Allen Co and partly in Wells Co. They look like brothers to me, but I have no proof.George's father and mother, I believe, were William Redding (1784-1853) and Delphia Brown (1783-1854. They died in Wilkes Co, North Carolina.

I am looking for information on a George DILLMAN b-1867 in Dillman, Wells Cnty, IN. He was at the home of William and Rebecca Sine in the 1870 and 1880 Census. I have been able to find information on the Sine family, but nothing that will help me in finding out information re: George A. DILLMAN. I am trying to find information on George's actual parents. I think it was George H. b-1843 - son of Andrew b-1811. In the 1870 census, George H. was at home with father and mother but a widower... Anyone that has anything, it would help! Thanks, Susan

Hi...I saw your reference to your collection of Benders and I have started to do some work on one of my daughter in laws lines that comes from Wells County. Her ancestor was Rebecca BENDER who was born October 19, 1825 in Pennsylvania and married to a Joel Hey. She died in 1891 and was buried in Horeb Cemetery. The date of birth I have from some papers that a relative of my daughter-in-law had with that info but with no sources. Do you have any clue about this Rebecca...any other info about her or her parents etc?
Thank you,
Susan in California

Today reading old queries I noticed yours. Haven't done much research on the Burgess line for a while.
I am a descendant of:
Richard M. & Sarah Jane(Richardson)Burgess
Richard Carl Burgess & Jeanette Olive Chalfant
Eugene Carl Burgess & Clara D. Wilson
Would gladly exchange and share information. I have very little on your lines.
I am Nancy J. Burgess Willis and live in Kansas where RC & JO migrated in early 1900's.
My father agree to a DNA test a few months before his death in 2005 at age 93 and despite finding no paper trail the test shows he is of the line of Col. William Burgess of Maryland.

When Ida Rupright Mills died in 1933, her Elzey's funeral home information listed four children, sons Homer and John, and daughters Mrs. Bessie Young, and Mrs. George B. Morris.
When her husband Sylvester Mills d. in 1936 the two daughters names were Mrs. W.A.Merkey and Mrs. Mildred Morris.
The obituary of John W. Mills, who d.1959, son of Sylvester and Ida Mills, gives his sisters names as Mrs. Wm. Merkey and Miss Mildred Mills.
The Cemetery Index for Wells Co. lists Mildred Mills (1891-1978) and Bessie E. (Mills) Merkey (1899-1985)
It seems Bessie md. Wm Merkey sometime between the years her parents died, and that Mildred md. George B. Morris bef. the 1930 census. George B. "Monis" as indexed ancestry.com, wife Mildred and her two daughters Alice and Josephine are living in Bluffton in the 1930 census. It seems Mildred later took back her maiden name of Mills.
Hope this helps.
I don’t have access to the divorce records, that would sure help.

1. I will get the obituary at the Fort Wayne library for Mildred Mills that died in May 1978, and post it if turns out to be “Mystery Mildred.” I was guessing that her daughter Josephine on the 1930 census was the same as “Jo Ann” in the cemetery index.

2. Bessie Young is shown as divorced head of household with 4 children in Bluffton 1930 census.

3. I didn’t find Bessie and Mildred’s marriages in the book Marriage Records Wells Co, IN 1899-1974, maybe they married in Allen Co. or ??

4. Harry Hedges is in the 1920 census Jefferson twp, Wells Co. indexed ancestry.com as “Harry Hedger.” Also in household is wife Mildred and daughter Ida Alice, age 1.

I don’t have anything about an Edward A. Hedge as a son of Harry Hedges, but there is an Edward A. Hedges b. abt 1916 in the 1920 census household of Earl Hedges in Huntington Co.

5. George B. Morris is in Bluffton on the 1920 census indexed ancestry.com as “Geo B Morris” with wife Rose, and two children, Fred P. and Martha Rose. George B. Morris was a physician and his father’s biography is posted online http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ind...

6. When George B. Morris married Edna Mae Compton April 2, 1940, he stated it was his 3rd marriage. I assume that he and Mildred Mills divorced between the 1930 census and his 1940 marriage.

I’m glad to help, it has been an interesting puzzle. I just noticed that there is an obituary for Bessie Merkey that d. in 1985, I will get that from the Ft. Wayne paper.

GEORGE SCHOCH KILLED BY C. B. & C. ENGINE

Bluffton Chronicle
November 6, 1905

GEORGE SCHOCH KILLED BY C. B. & C. ENGINE
__________

Former Bluffton Man is First Victim To Meet Death On The New Road.
________
Wreck Occurred Saturday Night
_____

Engine of Gravel Train Overturned into the Ditch and Schoch Was Scalded to Death
__

George Schoch, of Pennville, formerly a resident of this city, was the victim of the first fatal accident which has occurred on the C.B.C. railroad. He was fatally injured in a bad wreck which occurred Saturday evening at 5:40 o’clock at a point eight miles south of Bluffton, on the Reuben Stout farm, situated between Petroleum and Reiffsburg. Schoch, who was the fireman on the wrecked engine, died shortly after one o’clock Sunday morning. Engineer F.F. Thompson also of Pennville escaped with only slight injuries.

The wrecked train consisted of only the engine and tender, and a passenger coach. In the coach were Conductor Jennings and a brakeman and the entire crew were returning to Pennville after having brought a gravel train of nineteen cars to this city

The train was running southward at a pretty high rate of speed, about twenty five miles and hour, Jennings said, the crew intended to meet the regular north bound passenger train at Fiatt. The engine was running backward, there being no way of turning the engines around, and the tender was the first to leave the rails. It jumped off onto the east side of the track in such a way that the engine striking it was overturned in the opposite direction, onto the west side of the track. The passenger coach did not leave the rails.

Thompson managed to extricate himself from the overturned engine before he was burned by escaping steam, but Schoch was scalded from head o foot and the flesh peeled off in places. The skin peeled off his hands like a pair of gloves. He was not pinned down by the engine, as was first reported, and got out of the wreckage by himself, but he was directly in the was of the clouds of escaping steam and a few seconds were sufficient for his flesh to be literally cooked.

After getting clear of the wreck Schoch and Thompson were both able to walk to the pike about a half mile to the east, where a rig was provided to taken hem to Petroleum. Doctors H. W. Markley and F.M. Dickson did all that medical skill could do to alleviate the sufferings of the injured while Dr. L.A. Spaulding, of this city, the road surgeon, was called by telephone, ad drove to Petroleum.

The injured men were taken to Pennville to their homes on the passenger train, which had been held up at Petroleum. Schoch realized his critical condition and said that if he must die he wanted to die at home with his family around him. Dr. Spaulding went to Pennville and did all that was possible for Schoch until death relieved his sufferings.

Engineer Thompson had one ankle sprained but received no burns, and none of his injuries were of a serious nature. Realizing that Schoch was much worse hurt that himself Thompson refused to let the doctors care for him at Petroleum until all possible attention had been given to Schoch.

Schock was aged about thirty seven and he leaves a wife and five young children to mourn his death. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schoch and was born near Tocain, this county. His father ahs been dead a number of years but his mother is still living near Tocsin. He also has a brother living in Ohio, and a sister, Mrs. Will Yarger, at Tocsin.

Schoch was married in 1885 to Miss Viona Ehret a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Ehrett, then residing at Ossian. Both of her parents died last spring. She has two brothers George and A. S. Ehrett, living at Ossian, and they drove through this city to Pennville Sunday.

Schoch has been in the employ of the C.B. &C. more than two years and he moved with his family to Pennville during the past summer. He formerly lived in Oklahoma suburb of this city, where he owned property, and he was employed for quite a long time as section foreman on the L. N. & W. He also worked at one time at the Grimes shops and the Arnold Elevator.

The funeral of Schoch was held Tuesday at Ossian. The funeral party left Pennville early in the morning to drive to Ossian and arrived there about two o’clock in the afternoon.

The American Mechanics lodge of this city, of which Schoch was a member, met at their hall at eleven o’clock on Tuesday forenoon, and marched to the south end of Main Street to meet the funeral party and act as an escort through the city. W.A. McFarren and C.S. Wiltse, of the Mechanics lodge, drove to Pennville Sunday afternoon to assist in making arrangement for the funeral. The funeral benefits of the order have already been paid to the family.

The C.B. & C. had a wrecking crew at work all day Sunday, but having no wreck train or tools to meet the emergency could accomplish little. The engine lay on its side so that the pony trucks, or small wheels, were partly on the track. There was no way of moving the engine and the workmen built a track around it on the east side so that other trains might pass. The first train to get through was the passenger which pulled into Bluffton at 4:30 Sunday Afternoon.

Cause of The Wreck

A C.B. & C. employee, who worked at the scene of the wreck all day Sunday, says that no defect was found in the track at the place where the wreck occurred; in fact, he says it seemed as good a piece of track as any point on the road. The flange was broken on one of the wheels of the tender but whether it was broken before or in the wreck itself could not be determined. There were no marks on the rails, he says, to indicate that it was broken off before the wreck.

When the tender jumped off to the east side of the track it was pushed along for about fifty feet in the soft dirt until it struck a solid bank, where it was reared into the air and catching the engine, toppled it over in the opposite direction.

Thompson jumped through a cab window as the engine went over, but Schock was caught in the cab. A big three inch pipe leading to the lubricators and injectors broke off and the whistle also broke off and was blown seventy five feet. Escaping steam and water from the pipes were what cooked Schock alive.

It developed Monday that instead of trying to reach Petroleum the crew was trying to reach Fiatt to meet the passenger and were therefore probably running at a faster speed than usual.

Nothing has yet been done toward raising the engine and it will be necessary to get heavy jacks and blocks and tackle from Fort Wayne to raise it. Both it and the tender are badly demolished and it may be impossible to repair them. Even their temporary loss is a heavy blow to the C.B. & C. The train load of nineteen cares of grave was the last that was intended to bring to Bluffton this fall for use in the street paving and other work here.
1. Thanks for catching that! In the 1930 Wells County census, Harry is divorced and living with his parents, with Edward listed as grandson--I assumed that Edward was Harry's son. Edward's brother, Earl, is living with his other grandparents. I'm guessing Earl Sr. and Jessie died? I don't see either listed in the Wells County cemetery or obit index.

2. I noticed that Alice & Josephine are listed as stepdaughters of George B. Morris, but their last name is listed as Morris. Your theory that "Jo Ann Mills" is Josephine, buried next to Mildred Mills in Oak Lawn, is interesting--the birth year works. I'm curious why Josephine would take the surname "Mills" rather than "Hedges."

3. In George Morris's obit, Rosa and Edna are mentioned, but not Mildred!

If you come across more info, please let me know! Maybe when they publish the 1940 census, we'll get some more clues.
Yes, it's a great help--but more questions arise!

1. The Wells County cemetery index says that Mildred Mills's grave (d. 1978, buried Oak Lawn)is next to Jo Ann Mills, who stone says "Mother." I think this is another Mildred, not "ours."

2. Poor William Young's cemetery listing has the notation "single." He died 1944, so I guess he and Bessie divorced.

3. William A. Merkey first married Edith Folk, who died in 1929. I can't find Bessie or Mildred's subsequent marriages.

4. Mildred Mills married Harry Hedges in 1915; they were the parents of Edward A. Hedge in 1916 (I haven't been able to find them in the 1920 census yet). Harry and Edward are buried in Beth and Fairview Cemeteries. Harry died in 1977, so if Mildred was Mrs. Morris in 1936, I guess they divorced.

5. I also can't find George Morris in the 1920 census. Daughter Alice should be there, too, as she was born (according to the 1930 census) in 1919. Of course, Alice & Josephine could be George's daughters from a prior marriage; I wish I could find them in the 1920 census.

6. If John's obit gave Mildred's name as "Miss Mildred Mills," I'm wondering if she and George divorced, too.

Do you have access to divorce records? I've not come across them online.

THANK YOU for your help! I didn't know about brother John until your reply.

According to the Wells County Marriage Licenses, Lemon William Haflich married Mildred Mills 24 Dec. 1911. He then married Daisy M. Powell 29 Nov. 1916. A Mildred Mills married Harry Hedges 24 Nov. 1915.

The only Mildred Mills I find is the daughter of Sylvester and Ida A. Rupright, born 25 Nov. 1891.

Did the marriage between Lemon and Mildred not take place after all? Was it annulled? Is there in fact two Mildred Mills?

Mildred and Lemon are both distant cousins of mine via different lines.

I'm related to MANY of the people mentioned. I hope my notes may help other researchers.

Mr. and Mrs. U. S. Lesh and son, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Sarah Lesh, of Markle, Mrs. McElhaney, of Liberty Center, and Mr. and Mrs. Homer McElhaney spent Sunday in the Joe Lesh home.

*Ulysses S. Lesh is Sarah Lesh’s son and Mrs. Homer McElhaney (Eulalia Lesh)’s uncle. Joe Lesh is Eulalia Lesh McElhaney’s brother. The connection to me is REALLY distant: Eulalia and Joe Lesh are the 2nd cousins once removed to Betty Lou Lesh, who is my 4th cousin 2 times removed.

Mr. and Mrs. Homer Raber and sons, Wayne and Earl, Mr. and Mrs. John Bailey and daughters, Elizabeth and Mary, John Gilbert and daughter, Ruth and Mrs. Lola Gilbert and children, Kathleen, Nova, Lee, and Jerald, were Sunday dinner guests in the Mart Gilbert home.

*Mrs. Raber is Maude Gilbert, the sister of Mrs. John Bailey (Lydia Merle Gilbert), John Gilbert, and Lola Gilbert’s late husband, George. Martin Gilbert is their father. John Elgin Bailey is my 1st cousin 2 times removed.

Mr. and Mrs. Chet Brickley arrived home recently from a month’s visit in Kansas.

*Mrs. Brickley is Zora Mae Weikel, my 2nd cousin 3 time removed

Mr. and Mrs. John Haflich, sr., left Tuesday for Newata, Okla., for an extended visit with their son, George and family.

*This may be John and Elizabeth Ditzler Haflich, who had a son named George (b. 1874), but I don’t know why John has “sr.” after his name. If this is the correct family, John is the first cousin of William Haflich, who is the husband of Sarah Ann Sparks, my 1st cousin 5 times removed.

Mr. and Mrs. Larue Roudebush, Mr. and Mrs. George Roudebush and Mr. and Mrs. John Haflich and son Richard, and daughter, Laura May, spent Sunday in the Charles Hamilton home in Roanoke.

*Larue and George Roudebush are brothers. Larue’s wife is Jennie Weikel, my 2nd cousin 3 times removed. George’s wife is Effie G. Beaber Ormsby, whose first husband, Elmer F. Ormsby, is my 2nd cousin 3 times removed. John H. Haiflich is my 3rd cousin 2 times removed; his wife, Mayretha, is the daughter of Effie Beaber and Elmer Ormsby (raised by grandparents Joshua and Lydia Beaber), so she too is my 3rd cousin 2 times removed. I have no connection to Charles Hamilton.

Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gardenour, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Griffin and sons, Eugene and Junior, spent Sunday in the Howard Gardenour home in Fort Wayne.

*Earl and Howard Gardenour are brothers. Their sister, Elta May, is married to Charles Clifton Taylor, my 2nd cousin 3 times removed. I have no connection to Lloyd Griffin.

Mr. and Mrs. William Odler and sons, Herschel and Arthur, spent Sunday in the Eldo Wilkison home, south of Bluffton.

*No relation

Mr. and Mrs. William Hart spent Sunday in the Russell Summers home east of town.

*If this is the William Hart (b. 1889) who is the son of Benjamin F. and Rachael Sparks Hart, he is my 3rd cousin 4 time removed.

Mrs. Ella Elick, of Fort Wayne, spent a few days recently in the Charles Decker home. Dale, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Decker, returned home with her.

*Mrs. Ella Elick is Mary Ellen Preskey Elick, widow of Jonas Elick. Her daughter, Nora, is the wife of Charles Monroe Decker. Their son is Robert Dale. I’m not a direct relation, but I’m guessing the Deckers are connected somehow.

Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Crismore and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stuckey, of Montpelier, Mr. and Mrs. Andy Haflich and Mr. and Mrs. Alta Brickley took Sunday dinner in the Jacob Haflich home.

*Andrew J. Crismore’s first wife was Mehala Ellen Lamb, the sister of my great-great grandmother. I am reasonably certain that Andy Haflich is the father of Jacob Haflich, who in turn is the father of Mary Irene Haflich, the wife of Frank Alta Brickley. Although these are not directly related, the Haflichs and Brickleys are connected through marriage to several branches of my Wells County family.

Ooooo, another Bender for my collection!

I am connected to this family via their mother, Ida Rupright. I also have that another sibling is Bessie, who married William W. Young.

Wells County genealogy is my obsession, er, hobby. I add people in as I come across them because I know that eventually I'll find that they're related to me in some way.

We're all amazingly lucky to have the BEST county site in the country for family history information. I'm so spoiled--I expect to have the resources for every county I need, and of course, they aren't so readily available.

Thank you so much for sharing your information.
