SAMUEL
CRUM, a progressive farmer, residing in Rock
Creek Township, is a native of
Pennsylvania, born in
Dauphin County, March 22, 1822, his parents, John and Elizabeth (
Haynes)
CRUM, being natives of
Pennsylvania and of
German ancestry. Samuel was reared on the home farm, and received such educational advantages as the rude log cabin subscription schools of that early day afforded. He lived with his parents until nineteen years of age, after which he worked out by the day and month until his marriage. He was married October 25, 1847, to Miss Mary
Brahm, who was born in
Dauphin County,
Pennsylvania, her father, John
Brahm, being a native of the same State, and was also of
German descent. After his marriage he rented his father-in-law's farm for fourteen years. He was bereaved by the death of his wife in 1851, who left at her death one child, a son, named John H. In February, 1858, Mr. Crum came to
Wells County,
Indiana, and bought 100 acres of land in Rock
Creek Township, which was then only partially improved. He married again in 1863, Miss Elmina Swatz, who was born in
Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania, coming with her father's family to
Wells County in the year 1854. To this union have been born four children:
Eli,
Emanuel, Aaron (deceased) and David. Mr. Crum hegan life without capital, and by his own industry and exertions he has accumulated a good property, which he uses in surrounding himself and family with all the necessary comforts of life, in politics Mr. Crum casts his suffrage with the Democratic party. Mrs. Crum is a member of the
German Reformed church.
