OSSIAN, Ind., April 22. -- The Needlecraft club will meet with Mrs. Will Woodward to-morrow evening for their usual pleasant time with fancy work.
Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Sparks were in Huntington yesterday. While there they attended the funeral of an old friend, Mrs. Thomas Jacobs.
Mr. and Mrs. Walker Roe entertained Mr. and Mrs. Ray Cupp of Uniondale yesterday.
Mrs. E. W. Longfellow and daughter Dulanna, who came here from Edgerton to visit with Mrs. Longfellow's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Ferguson, was called to Warsaw this morning by the serious illness of her husband's father.
Miss Ida Kreigh has as her guest today, Miss Mabel Clock, a trained nurse from Hope hospital.
The usual commencement activities will open Sunday evening with the baccalaureate services at the M. E. church. Miss Erma Bowman will play the introductory music. A quartet composed of Messrs. Halden Hunter, Orin Roe, Aubrey Kellogg and Hugh Dean, will furnish a selection. Rev. F. K. Baker will make the invocation, and following the scripture lesson Miss Elzey will sing "Consider the Lilies." The sermon to the graduates will be delivered by Rev. J. Orr Powell, pastor of the M. E. church. A selection by the quartet, followed by the benediction, will close the services. This year's graduating class is composed of the following: Misses Mary and Martha Way, Thelma Spencer and Adah Brickley, and Messrs. Russell Caston, Leland Anthony, Roscoe Smith and Ross Wilson. On Wednesday, April 26, the seniors will give their clcass play, "A Scrap of Paper," in Ossian, and on Thursday evening they will repeat it at Uniondale. The seniors have put in lots of time in preparing this play, and those who have witnessed the rehearsals are loud in their praise of the histrionic ability of the graduating class. After this Thespian interlude the commencement exercises will be held, and Friday evening, April 28, at the Presbyterian church is the date and place. Dr. Charles M. Stuart of the Northwestern university, will deliver the commencement address. The annual alumni banquet will be held Saturday evening, April 29, in the K. of P. hall, at which time the Pythian sisters will serve the refreshments.
Mr. and Mrs. Don Davis have returned from Bluffton, moving into the house they occupied last year. Mr. Davis will continue his work with Hort Lesh in the cement block factory.
As soon as school is closed here, Russell Caston and Roscoe Smith will go to school at Winona.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Elzey gave a surprise for James Elzey and family, who left to-day for their new home near Hartford City. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Marion Hoover and family, Mr. and Mrs. Will King and family, Mr. and Mrs. John Elzey, Mr. and Mrs. Will Parker and family, Mrs. L. B. Hissem, Mrs. Frank Clark and son Lewis, Mrs. Frank Zehrung, Miss Augusta Dishong and Charles Elzey. Mr. and Mrs. William King entertained with music. Home-made candy was served.
Later word coming from Indianapolis to Ossian friends states that Donald Norwalt, son of S. F. Norwalt, and formerly a resident here, was more seriously hurt than at first was stated. Some think he cannot recover. One statement was that in the motorcycle accident he suffered injuries which made amputation of his limb necessary.
The Philatheas had a delightful time at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Roe last evening. Mrs. Roe proved herself an ideal hostess, and the young ladies of the Philathea circle enjoyed every moment of the time. Each young lady came dressed to represent a book or an author, and a progressive game of letters was played. Very dainty refreshments were served by Mrs. Roe. Those present were as follows: Misses Pearl and Elanor King, who are home from Miami univeristy, Oxford, O.; Kate Travis, May Wilson, Phoebe Summers, Ida Kreigh, May Morton, Augusta Yager, Gem Tyler, Marguerite Burnett, May Weaver, Marjorie Nill, Mary Roe, Helen Roe, and Mesdames F. K. Baker, Augusta Resler, M. C. Aldred, Walter Timbrook, U. C. Boone of Bluffton and W. E. Hunter of Columbia City.
The senior class banquet will be held to-morrow evening at the home of Miss Thelma Spencer. Each member of the senior class may take a guest. Elaborate preparations are being made to cater the banquet.
Mrs. Hazel Wilson has been honored by being chosen to represent the Ossian lodge at the district convention of the Pythian Sisters. This convention will be held at Converse Wednesday, April 26. Mrs. Clyde Hanna, Mrs. A. S. Elzey and Miss Roe Elzey will also attend the convention.
Dr. I. N. Hatfield of Bluffton, accompanied by A. F. Roe of Ossian, went to Waldron, Ind., a town located near Indianapolis. The purpose of their trip was to inspect this old folks' home at that point, with a view of gaining admission for Mrs. Sarah Wilson. Dr. Hatfield is a nephew and Mr. Roe is guardian.
Mrs. W. E. Hunter and son William will return to their home in Columbia City to-morrow after a week here with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Roe.
Ms. V. C. Boone, after a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Deam, returned to her home in Bluffton. Mr. Boone was making a business trip to Chicago.
Mrs. E. H. Roe will have as dinner guests Friday, Mrs. Frank Myers, Miss Ruth Myers and Mrs. Tom Guldin, of Bluffton, and Mrs. Ed Hall and son John, of Chicago.
Miss Lucile Davis has been critically ill for several days. Dr. F. A. Metts of Bluffton was called as council. A trained nurse from Fort Wayne is in attendance, and Dr. D. C. Wybourn is attending physician. Miss Davis was reported as very slightly improved today. The trouble is of a stomach and intestinal nature and may prove to be a severeulceration of the stomach.
Mrs. Jasper Middaugh of near Zanesville spent yesterday with her daughter, Mrs. Gerald Beaty. She was accompanied by her daughter when she returned home, and Mrs. Beaty will remain for the week end.
Ross Wilson will go to Warren, O., after commencement. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Wilson, now reside in the Ohio town.
The following students leave for Angola to attend Tri-State normal after commencement: Miss Mary Way, Miss Martha Way, Miss Lurah Davison and Mr. Leland Anthony.
Mrs. F. P. Quackenbush and daughter, Mrs. Lee McNeal, went to Roanoke today. They will visit for the week end with friends. Mrs. McNeal will go to Flint, Mich., next week.
Miss Glenn Quackenbush entertained the Daphne Girls very nicely at their meeting this week. An election of officers was held, resulting as follows: Miss Nina Bowman, president; Miss Martha Way, vice-president; Miss Lurah Davison, treasurer; Miss Helen Gray, press reporter. The committees, were as follows: Devotional -- Misses Isabella Metts, Doris Norwalt, Cressie Ormsby; flower committee -- Misses Hattie Wilson, Mary Hunter and Isabelle Brown; social committee -- Misses Thelma Spencer, Lulu Prough and Mary Way; lookout committee -- Misses Helen Gray, Thelma Spencer and Faye Fryback. Those who attended the pleasant affair were as follows: Misses Mary Way, Martha Way, Nina Bowman, Lurah Davison, Helen Gray, Glenn Quackenbush, Mebel Roe, Mary Hunter, Carrie Fesselman, Doris Norwalt, Cressie Osborne, Adah Brickley, Hattie Wilson, Isabella Meets, Isabelle Brown, Dola Fryback, Faye Frybach and Lulu Prough.
