Clement Watkins born about 1791 in Maryland married a Mary Butler in 1823 in Maryland. Mary Butler was born in 1793 in Maryland. They came to Warren County, Indiana in the mid 1830's Clement and Mary are buried Davis cemetery in Warrien County, Indiana. They had nine known children, six daughters and three sons. One of their sons was Clement Jr. who married twice. His second wife was to a Sarah Ferrell. They were married in 1865 Tippicanoe County. Clement Jr. was a Civil War Veteran. I am a gg-grandson of Clement Jr. and Sarah (Ferrell) Watkins. I have a lot of information on the Watkins line.

LAURD memorial on 63 ??

I was in Warren County Indiana, on 63 about 2 miles south of West Lebanon - where on the west side of the road is a concrete memorial with "LAURD" (or LAURO) on the bottom.

Also on it is what looks like a road workers vest, which possible leads me to believe maybe this is a memorial of a road worker who lost his life around here?

I attached a picture.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had any additional information about this.... it kind of perked my interest. Thanks.

Thank you, that is the one. I did find stones with Williams, Stoner, James, & Cloyd.

The "lane" back to the cemetery is some-what overgrown, with the grass in middle of the lane easily scraping the bottom of the car, but the cemetery itself is well maintained & freshly mowed. Some stones are "hidden" within a thick clump of trees & bushes that I could not get too - plus found some stone 1/2 buried where I'm sure there are others are completely buried.

Thanks again for the name - I try to name all my pictures with the cemetery name, and even though I've been able to find names for many others, just could not find the name for that one.

On my map, I am seeing this as the Woods Cemetery. Located south of West Lebanon, take old 63 south to Hanging Rock Church Camp. The entrance to the camp is on the right. Make a left turn from 63 onto a gravel road, which appears to be a lane. The cemetery is one half mile on the left. Surnames are Williams, Biggs, Stoner, Garrison, James, Cloyd and others.
The map & directions that I am using are included in the Warren County Cemetery Inscriptions books that were published by Rosella Jenkins. The map is inserted at the front of the book. A copy of this map might be obtained at the library in Williamsport.

I'm trying to find out what the name of a certain cemetery is. It is located in Warren County, and just in Pike Township - South of West Lebanon, just to the east of the Hanging Rock Church off of State Road 263.

Here is a map:

http://www.acme.com/mapper/?ll=40.21427,-87.38781&z=13&a...

The cemetery is mowed, but many stones are 1/2 buried... and probable some that all completely buried. I've started to take pictures of every stone in every cemetery in Warren county, and want to make sure I have the name of the cemetery correct, and I can't find nothing that points to this one.

Thanks for any help.

The Legend Of Kate's Pond
...Kate's Pond, known as Lake Kickapoo until 1812, covered more than a hundred acres of land and was much deeper than it is now. In its native wild it was a beautiful lake, full of fish and a great resort for the Indians.
The name Kate's Pond is a reminder of a tragic historic legend.
General William Henry Harrison, remembering Zachariah Cicott's services as a scout, again called him to guide his army from Vincennes to Tecumsah's encampment on the Tippecanoe River (Battleground, Indiana). Cicott decided to cast his fortune with General Harrison and the Americans.
Cicott had a sweetheart among the Kickapoos, a very beautiful girl to whom he was very devoted, and she was equally fond of him. He promised her that when the troublesome times were over, he would return to her. Knowing of the Indians' plan to ambush the American troops, the Indiana maiden gave Cicott the secrets of her people's strategy.
Cicott led the army north, away from the Wabash River. One night in early November, 1911,(misprint? should be 1811) the general and his force of 800 men were emcamped on Pine Creek about a mile northeast of what is now Carbondale. It was this re-routing that saved Harrison's men from an Indian ambush.
All of the warriors in Kate's family and tribe took part in the Battle of Tippecanoe and fought with the Indiana there.
The Indians who returned had seen and recognized Cicott with Harrison and his army. They decided that the Indian girl had betrayed their confidence and divulged the secrets of the tribe to Cicott. They held a council and decided that Kate should be put to death by drowning. She was drowned in Lake Kickapoo by her tribe, and since that time it has been known as Kate's Pond...

Cicott's Grave
...There is a gravestone in the Independence cemetery the inscription of which states Elizabeth Cicott consort of Zachariah died November 10, 1838, aged 38 years. Whicker probably assumed the the Pe-say-quot mentioned in the treaty and the Elizabeth Cicott buried at Independence were the same person thus erroneously confirming her full identity as Elizabeth (Moran) Cicotte.
There is a reference to Z. Cicotte marrying a second wife who was a member of the Six Nations tribe...
...In his later years, Cicotte was partically paralyzed and unable to speak. All of the reliable sources state his death occured in the year 1850. He was not listed in the Census of 1850 which was taken in June. There are no probate records on file in Warren County pertaining to his death. This is a point of interest because, considering all of the legal problems he endured throughout his lifetime, on would suppose that there would still be some unpaid note or unsettled property dispute at the time of his death. He is reported to be buried in the Independence cemetery near his wife, Elizabeth. In October of 1930, a commemorative marker was placed on the spot that reads: Zachariah Cicott - 1781-1850, first white man in Warren County, always faithrul to the white people, noble hearted, zealous and patriotic hero of the Wabash Valley.
Info from the Sesquicentennial book of Independece, Indiana

Lisa, I can give you more info on the material that you are wanting or you can visit the library in Williamsport. So much history of Warren County! Taking the school children on a tour of your county is such a great idea.

Still not related. You stated on another board that the info that you had indicated that Elizabeth Nutter had gone into an insane asylum. In the 1910 census I was only able to find one person by the name of Nutter that fit your Elizabeth and that was the Lizzy I found in Blackford county. Not too far away fron Blackford is the county of Wayne. I found a record for the death of Elizabeth E Nutter who died in Wayne County, Wayne township on 24 Dec 1912, aged 44 years, which would be about the right age for your Elizabeth and there was an Asylum in Wayne township at that time. The record is recorded in the County Health Office in Richmond.

I'm not related to Henry Stewart, but I do have a connection with the Banning family.

The Stewart/Banning connection is as follows (hope I don't confuse you all)...a William Stewart was married to Ann Watkins in Delaware and came to Warren County in the mid-1850's. Ann was a sister of Allifair "Allie" or "Alice" and also of my ancestor William Watkins, father of Josiah Watkins, who settled in Warren County in 1865. Allifair was married to William Banning and they came to Warren County in the mid-1850's.

According to census records William Stewart was born about 1800.

Does anyone know the connection between Henry Stewart and William Stewart? Was he a younger brother?
________________________________________________

Warren Republican, pg. 3
May 23, 1885
Williamsport,Warren County, Indiana

HENRY STEWART, an old resident of this county, living in Warren township, aged about 76 years, died on Thursday, April 16th, and the remains were interred in the Davis Cemetery on the day following--Friday--near Green Hill. Deceased had never married and lived with a family named BANNING who were tenants on his, STEWART's, farm. Deceased is reported to have been in comfortable circumstances and during his life and sickness had been kindly treated and cared for by the BANNING family.

Old Settlers
By Sandford C. Cox
1860

Typed By Lora Radiches

Names in this biography are: Enos Canutt, Esq, James Cunningham, Search, William Harrison, and Dr. Jas. H. Buell, Ullery, Search, and a man called Wild Cat Wilson, John Semans, Wesley Clark, Robb, Hickenbotham, Tillotson, Clinton, John B. King, Shanklin, Jameson, Hall, Butterfield, Purviance, Boggs, Enoch Farmer, Samuel Ensley, John and Joseph Cox, Seavers, the widow Mickle, McMahan, the widow Cox, Hollingsworth, Solomon Munroe, Isaac Waymire and Zachariah Cicot, Dr. Simon Yandes, James Gooden and Benjamin Crow, William and Jonathan Roads, Dickson Cobb, Ridinour, Seymour Roads, William Railsback, Medseker, Esq. Kearns, McCords, Judge Samuel B. Clark, Fenton, Magee, Edward Mace, Jerry Davis, John and Gabriel Reed, Thomas Johnson, Dawsons, Orrin Munson, Sino Munson, James Stewart, Moores, Bowyer and John Stevenson, alias “Jack Stinson

CHAPTER XII.

OLD SETTELRS OF WILLIAMSPORT AND SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS-PINE CREEK—KICKAPOO-—CICOT’ S LANDING—DOCTOR YANDES AND A ANOTHER MAN DROWNED—RAINSVILLE AND ITS VICINITY—REED AND DAVIS’ SETTLEMENT—JACK STINSON AND THE GAMBLERS —JACK INDICTED—HIS TRIAL—HIS SPEECH—IS ACQUITTED—NATURAL SENERY AROUND WILLIAMSPORT—TILE FALLS OF FALL. CREEK - MINERAL SPRING BELOW TOWN—LARGE STONES ON THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND—A BOARDING HOUSE SCENE—SOMNAMBULISM—ECLIPSE OF THE SUN.

On my first visit to Williamsport, the county seat of Warren County, I stopped with William Search, who kept a boarding house on Main Street, near where the Warren Republican, an excellent newspaper, is now printed and published by my old friend Enos Canutt, Esq.

James Cunningham, tile clerk and recorder of the county, boarded and kept his office in Search’s house; and as the most of his time was occupied in building a couple of flat boats to carry corn to the New Orleans market the next Spring, he employed me to write in his office of nights, and on Saturdays, which would not interfere with my school hours. The town then consisted of five families, viz: William Harrison, the proprietor of the village, who kept the ferry, and a little tavern and grocery at the foot of Main street; Dr. Jas. H. Buell, Ullery, Search, and a man called Wild Cat Wilson. Two only (Harrison and Wilson) of the families above named had children large enough to go to school. The rest of my patrons lived in the country, some two or three miles from town, and consisted of John Semans, sheriff of the county, Wesley Clark, Robb, Hickenbotham, and one or two more. At this time Warren County was but thinly settled. Perrin Kent, county surveyor, Tillotson, Clinton, and a few other families, lived down towards Baltimore and Mound prairie. On Redwood, and sprinkled through the woods, and on the edge of Grand prairie, lived John B. King, Shanklin, Jameson, Hall, Butterfield, Purviance, and a few others. On Kickapoo, a small stream lying north of Big Pine creek, was a settlement composed of Boggs, Enoch Farmer, Samuel Ensley, John and Joseph Cox, Seavers, the widow Mickle, McMahan, the widow Cox, Hollingsworth, Solomon Munroe, Isaac Waymire and Zachariah Cicot, a French and Indian trader, who was born on the place where he lived (near where the town of Independence now stands) more than forty years before the organization of Warren County.

It was at this place—Cicot’s landing—in the spring of 1829, if my memory serves me correctly, that Dr. Simon Yandes, with two other men, attempted to cross the Wabash river in a canoe, and were thrown out in the middle of the river, and the doctor and one other were drowned; the third with difficulty made the shore, and escaped a watery grave.

Up Pine creek, in the Rainsville neighborhood, lived James Gooden and Benjamin Crow, county commissioners, William and Jonathan Roads, Dickson Cobb, Ridinour, Seymour Roads, William Railsback, Medseker, Esq. Kearns, McCords, and a few others. Above Cicot’s was Judge Samuel B. Clark, Fenton, Magee, Edward Mace (father of the Hon. Dan Mace), Jerry Davis, John and Gabriel Reed, Thomas Johnson, Dawsons, Orrin Munson, Sino Munson, James Stewart, Moores, Bowyer and John Stevenson, alias “Jack Stinson,” who, in his earlier and palmier days, taught school in the Reed and Davis neighborhoods and perpetrated none of the eccentricities which filled up the last twenty years of his life.

While Jack is on the tapis—the notorious “Philosopher of the Nineteenth Century,” as he styled himself, with whom the most of my readers have long been acquainted. I will relate a novel triumph achieved by the “philosopher” during a term of the circuit court held at Williamsport many years since.

During the early times in this country, before books and newspapers had become plenty, some of the members of the legal profession, including sheriffs, bailiffs, &c., would occasionally engage in the very reprehensible practice of playing cards, and sometimes drink a little too much whisky. During a term of the court, Jack found out where these genteel sportsmen met of evenings to peruse the history of the “four kings,” as they termed it. He went to the door and knocked for admission. To the question who is there? He answered “Jack.” The insiders hesitated he knocked and thumped importunately. At length a voice from within said: “Go away Jack; we have already four Jacks in our game, and we will not consent to have a “cold one” wrung in on us.

Indignant at this rebuff from gentlemen from whom he had expected kinder treatment, he wheeled off from the door, muttering vengeance, which excited no alarm in the minds of the players. At first lie started up towards the falls to walk off his passion, if possible: but the further he went the madder he got. He finally concluded he would not “pass” while he held or might hold so many trumps in his hands; but would return and play a strong hand with them.

He gathered his arms full of stones, a little larger than David gathered out of the brook to throw at Goliath, and when he got near enough he showered a volley of them through the window into the room where they were playing—extinguishing their lights, the first platoon, and routing the whole band with the utmost trepidation into the street, in search of their furious assailant. Jack stood his ground, and told them that was a mere foretaste of what they might expect if they molested him in the least. Next day the pugnacious Jack was arrested to answer an indictment for malicious mischief, and failing to give bail, was lodged in jail. His prosecutors laughed through the grates of the prison as they passed. Meanwhile Jack “nursed his wrath to keep it warm,” and indicted a speech in his own defense. In due time he was taken before the court—the indictment read, and he was asked what he plead to the indictment. “Not guilty,” he answered, in a deep, earnest tone. “Have you counsel engaged to defend you? Mr. S.’’ enquired the Judge. No, please your honor, I desire none; with your permission, I will speak for myself.” “Very well,” said the Judge. A titter ran through the crowd. After the prosecuting attorney had gone through with the evidence, and his opening remarks in the case, the prisoner arose and said: “It is a lamentable fact, well known to the court and the jury, and to all who hear me, that our county seat has for many years been infested and disgraced (especially during court time), with a knot of drunken, carousing gamblers, whose bacchanalian revels and midnight orgies disturb the quiet, and pollute the morals of our town. Shall these nuisances longer remain- in our midst, to debauch society and lead our young men to destruction? Fully impressed with a sense of their turpitude, and my duty as a good citizen of the community in which I live. I resolved to abate the nuisance, which, according to the doctrine of the common law, with which your honor is familiar, I, or any other citizen, had a right to do. I have often listened with pleasure to the charges your honor gave the grand jury, to ferret out crime, and all manner of gaming in our community. I saw I had it in my power to ferret out these fellows with a volley of stone, and save the county the cost of finding and trying a half dozen indictments. Judge, I did abate the nuisance—and consider it one of the most meritorious acts of my life.”

The prosecutor made no reply. The judge and lawyers looked at each other with a significant glance. A nolle prosequi was entered. Jack was acquitted, and was ever afterward considered a trump.

The natural scenery around the town of Williamsport is romantic and beautiful, well worthy the pencil of the painter or the pen of the poet. A range of hills surrounded the original town, on the north and west, crowned with amphitheatre ranges of trees whose tops gradually rose above each other in such regular gradation, that in the Spring time, when robed in green, or when attired in their variegated lines of Autumn, they reminded one of a good, comely mother, surrounded with her bevy of lovely daughters, bedecked with green, scarlet or yellow, according to the age, taste or caprice of the wearer. A few clumps of tall evergreen pines are intermixed with these trees, along the steep cliffs that overhang the south bank of Fall Branch, a small stream that meanders through a narrow and fertile valley, which lies on the north side of town. ‘Plus little stream takes its time from a cataract where its pellucid waters are precipitated over falls some eighty or one hundred feet high, into a deep chasm, resembling the deep, narrow bed of the Niagara river, which is born of the most stupendous and sublime cataract in the world. Near the falls is a deep chasm, or fissure in the earth. Produced no doubt by an earthquake, or some great convulsion if nature, along which pedestrians can walk single file, from the top of the hill through this subterranean passage to the foot of the falls. Any person fond of the marvelous, or desirous of being reminded of the dark valley of the shadow of death, an gratify their curiosity by taking a lonely ramble down this dark, deep descent. This cataract and chasm are near the railroad depot, northwest of town. The interest of this little Niagara is greatly enhanced during the Spring amid Winter freshets, when the accumulated waters of Fail Branch leap and thunder over the rocks, throwing up foam and spray that forms a mimic rainbow above the heads of the aquatic shrubs and bushes that line time banks of the noisy streamlet, which laughs and leaps along in the sunlight a few hundred yards, until it is lost in the placid bosom of the ‘Wabash river, which rolls its broad, clear current along the eastern margin of the town. At the falls, and in the hills around the town, is to be fount some of the best sand and free stone in the State. A few huge specimens, about the size of an ordinary court house, can be seen lying around on the surface of the ground in several places, near the town, as if nature had placed them there to direct the attention of man to the rich quarries that lie imbedded beneath. About half a mile below town, surrounded by a broken and romantic landscape, is a large mineral spring, whose chalybeate waters are but little inferior to the celebrated artesian well at Lafayette, which is fast becoming a watering place for invalids and excursionists.

An incident occurred while I was boarding with Search in Williamsport, in the Winter of 1880, which occasioned no little vexation to the landlord and myself, as well as not a little merriment to the other boarders and inmates of the house. From childhood I had been subject to walking in my sleep. When from home, I always made it a point to get a bed to myself, if possible, but never made mention of my somnambulistic predisposition to any one. It so happened one night, that our boarding house was so crowded with lodgers that, to give all comfortable beds, it was so arranged that the landlady took the three children in bed with her, and mine host was to lodge that night in bed with me—who had always a bed to myself exclusively. This arrangement was made, however, entirely without my knowledge as I had retired to rest early that night, and was far in the land of dreams before Search got into bed with me. ‘Whether he touched me in getting into bed, or the simple stirring of the bed clothes disturbed me, I cannot say; but sure it was a change came o’er the spirit of my dream” from the moment he planted himself in bed by my side. I began to dream of a large, two-fisted antagonist, approaching me in a menacing manner—drawing nearer and nearer with clenched fist, and uplifted arm, while his piercing black eyes held a steady and fiend-like gaze upon me. I thought now was my time if I struck the first blow; so I let drive with all my might and hit my sleeping bedfellow plumb in the eye. A hound kicked in the ribs would not have set up a more piteous howl than did my friend Search. His mingled cries and groans startled every sleeper in the house, who simultaneously sprang upon the floor, crying, “What’s the matter?” “Oh! He has ruined me! He has put out my eye——bursted the ball!” If old Polyphemus when Ulysses put out his eye with a sharpened shaft of pine, roared louder than mine host did on this occasion, it was because he was bigger and had stronger lungs. A light was instantly struck—the camphor bottle was hurriedly brought—the unfortunate Search was taken from the bed and placed on a chair by the fire—his eye examined, and his forehead bathed with camphor. Cunningham and Ritchey decided the eye was not put out, but was badly bruised; and advised that a rotten apple be applied immediately, to prevent the eye turning black. At this stage of proceeding, I yawned, and affected to wake up—enquired what was the matter, and on being told I expressed my surprise, and unfeigned regret, for what had happened. Rotten apple was bound over his eye, and in about an hour all returned to their beds. Search crawled into bed with his wife and children for the remainder of the night; and I had the whole of the bed to myself. During the night the rotten apple slipped from his eye, which in the morning showed a partial eclipse—and in the evening the eclipse was almost total—and a black ring encircled his blood-shot eye for at least a week. At breakfast I repeated my regrets, and apologized in the best manner I could. Little was then said to increase my mortification, or make light of the landlord’s misfortune. But before a week passed, the boarders made frequent allusions to the great eclipse of the sun, which was to take place in a few weeks, and thought that other little eclipse might he regarded as a precursor of the larger that was to follow, to call our attention to the almanac, that we might have our pieces of smoked glass ready to gaze at the sublime spectacle when it made its appearance.

Tunis Van Pelt was the son of Ittia Van Pelt and Sarah McCollum. He and Sarah also had the following children besides the two you listed:
Joseph, Charity, James and John.
Joseph died in 1888 and is buried in West Lebanon Cem., Warren Co., IN, so Tunis and Sarah didn't go to Iowa until after 1888.
Tunis was a brother to my gr gr grandfather, James H. Van Pelt. My line stayed in Warren Co., IN and I was raised, and still live in, the area.

There were about four of this family who went on to Iowa, for the most part, about half went to Iowa and half stayed here (Warren Co., IN).

Would be happy to exchange info.

I am looking for information on Peter Brown, b. abt 1770 in Berks Co., PA and died abt Dec. 1848 in Warren Co., IN. I believe he purchased land in Fountain Co., IN in 1826 and then in Warren Co., IN in 1831. I am actually trying to see if there is a connection with a Susanna Brown b. 1808 in Cumberland Co., PA who marries in 1827 Fountain Co., IN a William Hodgins. I haven’t found a will for Peter Brown. I am hoping to find some record of Peter’s death, a will, a death certificate or probate or other record and ideally something that includes his wife’s name and any children.

I am looking for anyone who may have known or has any information on Ruth B. Lemming. Ruth was born on 5/3/1904 and passed away on 10/31/1992. Ruth was married to a John E. I believe Ruth was born as Ruth Gebhart and may have been adopted or taken in by a family by the name of Berry or Barry. I believe Ruth was a teacher at one time, maybe in Foster or Cramer. I would be most grateful if anyone out there has any information on this lady.

Thank You
JH
Thank you very much for the interesting information on Red Men Cemetery.

I found Thomas Jefferson Nutter, son of Benjamin Starr Nutter, and his second wife Mary Stewart burried in Red Men Cemetery. Both their children, Iris Nutter Gardner and Thomas Albert Nutter are burried in the same cemetery. I found the graves on Find A Grave. Pictures of their headstones are also availabe on that site.

Thomas Jefferson Nutter was my 2nd great grandfather. Sorry, the only pictures I have are what is posted. Thomas Jefferson Nutter, Thomas Albert Nutter, his son, my grandmother Lina Nutter. Of course I have many pictures of my grandmother, Lina. There is a picture of Mary Nutter (cannot really see her up close) posing with a team of about 8 mules. I wonder if she really drove that many mules and what were they carrying that required that many mules. The back of picture says:

"Mary Nutter taken at John Jetts barns as they came home from the Bluffton Street Fair. 1941"

My gradmother, was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Nutter and his 1st wife, Elizabeth Willis. I am still trying to find out what ever happened to Elizabeth Willis and where she is burried. Someone found her on the 1910 Federal Census and that is the last trace I have found.

If you are interested in communicating, I may be reached at gliv@bellsouth.net

Looking for person who has an index/registry of individuals buried in Warren County, Indiana cemeteries. Trying to find the grave site of a female with the last name of "Routzahn" (or some similar spelling) and the first name of either Lavina or Amanda. It is possible that her maiden name (Jackson) could appear in the records. She died sometime in the 1890s. If she is buried in Warren County, there is a strong likelihood she is buried in West Lebanon Cemetery as her husband and many other Routzahns are buried there. Thanks for your help.

The Red Men Cemetery is established from a patriotic group that adopted Indian ways and ethics. They are said to stem from a group carrying out the american way through patriotic acts such as the Boston Tea Party when they dressed up as Indians against what they believed was an illegal tax act.

A search on the web for I.O.R.M. (Improved Order of Red Men)will give more detail.
________________
I noticed that you have a number of pictures in your file that parallel my wife's Nutter family. I have 179,000 interconneceted family members in my Nutter data base. Her family stems from Benjamin Starr Nutter and her father was also Benjamin Starr Nutter. I came across you accidentally when two pictures showed up - One of Thomas Jefferson Nutter and another of her cousin - Lily Nutter of Warren, Indiana's husband Thomas Albert Nutter appeared in a search I was doing of Nutter pictures.

I was wondering if you have any other Nutter pictures.

Tim Eastom
She died in 1977 and I never knew her. Fanny grew up and died in Attica, Indiana so I'm willing to bet that we are somehow related. I will try to find out more information from records. If you find anything please let me know as well, there aren't a lot of relatives living and they aren't very willing to talk.

1854 letter from Francis C. HALL of Pope Co IL to Cousins in Williamsport

20 Oct 2008 ~ Last week while I was doing a little digging I found this letter tucked away in a book in the Pope County IL Circuit Clerk’s office. I believe Juliet [Field] Raum must have written the letter for Francis C. Hall, because she was the wife of John Raum the Circuit Clerk.
I hope this helps someone. Judy Foreman Lee ~ UndDee43@aol.com

[Page 1]

Williamsport Warren Co April 5th 1854

direct this to Mrs Hall

Dear Cousin

It is with some anxiety of mind that I address you this morning. The last letter I have addressed to your Brother I suppose he never received or he would have answered them the last letter that I got from him last fall stated that he intended visiting us in the spring and bring your mother and his wife along. And then he intended to go to Californy I sometimes think that he is already gone or that perhaps he is sick or dead or perhaps your mother is sick or something has happened that I know not of Now my dear cousin will you please write to me about your mother for it seems like as long as we both are in existence I want to hear from her When I think of my own mother the thought of your mother is the next uppermost thought

[Page 2]

When you think it is of me as a perfect stranger be that as it may gratify me by writing about your mother I know she is too old to write to me her self I am truly anxious to hear about all of you I will not trouble you with a long letter for doubtless you will not get it Brother Harvey has been sick this winter But is now better the rest of your relatives here are all well

The river is up now in fine order and boats are coming up all the time I should be happy to see any of you Cousin James wrote in his last letter that your brother Green was sick write in your letter whether he has got well And write whether you have got any letters from Uncle James or uncle William lately give my love to your mother And all my cousins and reserve a large portion for your self I hope that Cousin James and your mother will be up this spring

[Page 3]

I suppose that your mother has heard that my eyes were much inflamed last fall I went to Lafayette and got them cured But now they are as bad as ever I shall have to go back to Lafayette or Saint Louis or Go blind I have often expected that you would have written to me But now I have commenced I hope you will write to me sometime And tell me of your dear mother No more but remain your affectionate Cousin write soon

Francis C.
Re: Brown in Fountain and Warren Co., IN 1826-1850?

The Fountain County records book shows that a Peter Brown was from Hamilton County, Ohio, and purchased land in the county in 1826. This land was in Van Buren Twp. in Fountain County. I am also seeing a Simon Brown who was also from Hamilton County, Ohio, who also purchased land in 1826.
This info is from the 1881 Fountain County history book.
Cyrus Brown, farmer, Attica. Simon Brown, father of this subject, and Nancy Reed, to whom he was married in 1824, were reared in the same neighborhood in Cumberland, then Perry, county, Penn. The same year they moved to Ohio, and were four weeks on the road. In the autumn of the year 1827 he and his father, Peter Brown, came to Fountain County to inspect the country; they entered land and made a little hay, and during their brief stay were entertained by John Lopp, whom they found living here. They returned and brought their families, arriving November 23, the journey having consumed two weeks. They passed some of the finest prairie in the world to settle in the dense woods, where they might toil through tedious years to clear up a home......Peter Brown settled near Chambersburg, and after a few years moved into Warren County, where he and his wife finally died.....

According to what this says, Peter had a son named Simon. Cemetery records for Fountain County show that some of these Browns were buried in the Brown Cemetery in Shawnee Township.
