Re: Old Somerset Indiana

I found these postings from 2006 after I did a GOOGLE search on "Old Somerset", and I found them fascinating. I lived in Old Somerset back in the early 1960's. I was only 5-years-old when the town was flooded to create the reservoir. My father owned the local barber shop, and we lived acrossed the street from King's Grocery Store. I went to kindergarten in the Old Somerset school before we were moved to Southwood Elementary. Our home was physically moved up to New Somerset. The house had a side office that was formerly the office of the local doctor. When the house was moved to New Somerset, the office was detached from the house and from it my father's barber shop was created out on Highway 13 in New Somerset.

I have so many fond memories of Old Somerset, even though I was very young. I remember when the hardware store caught fire on the main street, and remember going down to the old bridge and throwing rocks down into the river. I loved the King's Grocery store because it had penny candy, and I would buy enough licorice and "grasshopper" candy sticks to last a week, with only a nickle.

I'd really enjoy conversing with others who remember, or know more, about Old Somerset.

wabash county obituaries have been abstracted from Wabash newspapers for the years 1847 to 1899. The obituary if there is one would be in a book entitled Early Death Records of Wabash County 1847 to 1873 by Woodward. I suggest you contact the Wabash Carnegie Library, as for Ruth Lord. Give her the information. The email address for the library is general@wabash.lib.in.us or contact Heather Allen at the county museum email archives@wabashmuseum.org. Both have a copy of the above book and couold quickly give you the information as to if there was one and when and what paper. They should even be able to provide a copy especially the library. The above book is also available for purchase.

The 6th anniversary of my sister's death is this Sunday, so I started snooping for some snippets of her...that's when I came across this board.

I don't think there is any connection through us between Cook and Petro, because my mom and my dad (Jerry Woodward, and Jill Woodward) were married then divorced. Then my dad remarried (Tracy Petro) That's why the Petro name is in there, we (Cooks/Woodwards) are all related to them (Petros) through my stepmom, Tracy. They haven't had any children either. So as far as I know that's our only connection.

I hope this helps. I know how frustrating it can be to hit dead ends with genealogy stuff...hopefully you find what you need.

-Brandon Woodward

I am also related to the Russells by marriage through John and Elizabeth Russell. Their son, William B. married Mary A. Oliver who was sister of my great grandfather, Thomas Oliver. They were the children of Benjamin Oliver and Sebthany Westlake who are also buried at Hopewell.

If anyone needs it, I have a copy of the pages of the book on the Russells regarding Hopewell.

I have some pictures of some of the Russells, one has Daniel (Judge) Russsell written on it. Even though we were not close blood wise, it seems like from the bits I have on the families that lived in Hopewell, they were close friends.

As a kid, we used to visit the cemetery on Memorial Day. It was always a favorite place to me. I remember visiting with another relative from there, a Peabody, who told us stories of the families and their connections.

There is another book, Tales of the Old Days, that has a bit about about Hopewell. It doesn't have anything about the Russells but more about Hopewell during the time that Gene Stratton Porter lived there. Her book Laddie is based on her life living there.

I have had the pages from the Russell book for so long I am not sure where I got them. Probably the library in Wabash. I remember seeing a copy of Tales of the Old Days at the book store in Wabash - Reading Room Books. It was first published in 1926 but a reprint has been done. The reprint also has index in it which I think the original did not. Reading Room books is on Wabash St. close to the museum. You can google it to get the exact address and phone.

Good luck
Marilyn

I use an Ancestry.com subscription with access to posted info by other researchers, the US Census, birth, death, and marriage data, etc., familysearch.org (LDS)and USGenWeb sites for most of the info I find. I will look at any website if I think there is a nugget of info posted.

Sometimes you have to get creative in entering info to get the hit on a name. Most times I am able to find something but there are a few instances where I come up empty.

If you are needing a lookup, I will be more than happy to help anytime.................Karen (sprung6@comcast.net)
There was nothing on May Willis after the 1910 census. My guess is she probably died sometime between 1910-1920. She also is not listed in the Georgia Death Index, 1919-1998 so my guess is if she died it probably occurred prior to 1919.

Found some more info on L.A. & Etta Willis & family:

USGenWeb - Bartow Co., GA - Oak Hill Cemetery

Name: Lee A.

Elizabeth. Not related. First, I don't think she married 2 different Rinards, I think Charles and William are the same person. Second, I think she was the daughter of George W Miller and Mary Ann Misner who married in Wabash county on 25 Oct 1859, in a ceremony performed by J.P. Benjamin H Price, source is book B, page 197. In the 1860 census the family was in Wabash county, Waltz township, page 16 and consisted of George W Miller, 38, a farmer, born in Pa, and Mary, 20, a housekeeper, born in Ohio. In 1870 the family was in Wabash county, Wabash Ward 1, page 24, and was headed by Geo Miller, 52, a laborer, born in Pa, and included Mary, 30, keeping house, born in Ohio, and Eliza, 10, Ind, and Mahlon, 3, Ind. As you know she married Charles W Rinard in 1877. In 1880 the family was in Wabash county, Noble township, page 32, and was headed by Charles W Rinard, 31, a farmer, born in Mich, no place lsited for the birth of his parents, and included his wife Eliza E, 20, born in Ind, father in Pa and mother in Ohio, and his son Geo W, 2, Ind. Geo W probably named for her father. Hope this helps. Don

Elizabeth Collins Russell i believe, was a sister of my GG grandfather John Collins found in Franklin County Indiana. Do you have any information on this Collins family. It is my understanding that when John's wife Rebecca McCoy died he went to live with family in Wabash county Indiana. Any information would be appreciated. Was Zachariah Collins connected to Elizabeth and John?

Sharon Tuggle
stuggl@yahoo.com

Thank You

WABASH PLAIN DEALER June 30, 1939 page 1 column 1
DEATH STRIKES TWICE IN BROOKS FAMILY IN SAME NIGHT
Death struck twice in the Brooks family Wednesday with the death of D.F. Brooks, one of the leading attorneys in Wabash since admission to the bar in 1895, at 6 o'clock, and in McLeasboro, Il, with the death of his brother, James O. Brooks.
The death of Mr. Brooks occurred at his home on south Fisher street following an illness of several weeks duration. He had been returned to his home only about a week and a half ago from the methodist hospital at Indianapolis. He had been failing steadily since his return from a Florida vacation earlier in the year, and death finally resulted from nervous exhaustion and heart complication.
Thursday morning the Brooks family received the wire from McLeansboro with the news of the death of his brother, James, which occurred suddenly at his home there Wednesday night.
Funeral services for Mr. Brooks will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the Jone Funeral Home with Rev. R.C. Plank of the First Methodist church officiating. Interment will be in Falls CEmetery.
The body will remain at the Jone Funeral Home where the family will receive friends.
David Franklin Brooks was born on a farm near Staunton, Va., on March 17, 1866, to Richard G. and Elizabeth C. The Brooks family is of English origin and the Kennedys were Scotch.
Mr. Brooks, the sixth in a family of (?) children, was reared in Virginia, his birthplace, and for (?) years after that he attended a Presbyterian Academy near Fishersville. In 1884 he taught his first term of district school, and in 1885, at the age of 19 went to hartford City, Ind., where he spent two years at work at sawmilling, also attending school.
Later he was employed in keeping a set of books for a produce firm at Warren, and then went into merchandise business on his own. Hist studies in law were continued intermittently until the fall of 1893, when he entered the law school of the Northern Indiana university of Valparaise. In June 1895, he was graduated there with his degree as bachelor of laws, and was admitted to the bar at that time. In October, 1895, he located in Wabash and has practiced here since that time.
mr. Brooks was a lifelong Republican, served as county attorney for a short period, and once was a candidate for circuit court judge. He also was active in lodge affairs of the community and was a past exalted ruler of the Elks. He was a member of the Royal Arch Masons.
In 1923, he was given an honorary LL.D. degree at Valparaiso University.
On April 6, 1892, he was married to Mrs. Anna Gale of Warren, ind. They were the parents of seven childtren. Harry Brooks died a year ago.
Surviving are the widow: six children, Lalla, Mrs. Lutz Rettig, Redlands, Ca.; Vada, Mrs. harold Matthews, Chicago, il.; Everett Brooks; Raymond Brooks, North manchester; Virginia, at home; and mary Brooks Leet, at home; also several grandchildren; and the following brothers and sisters, Ben Brooks, Wabash; Charles Brooks, and Mrs. E.A.
My husband's family is Phillip's Randolph Payne, Alabama's brother. I can send you what I have if you like but if you look in Conway ,Arkansas when these kids were born there is a Archelus Payne, with son Jonathan. These Payne's are from South Carolina and Georgia. Most went to Alabama and Miss ,,,They are somehow related to Enos although I was told Enos was born in Tennessee and his father Va.I have copied documents where Alabama's husband Hamp Dickey and other siblings sues for Enos's land. Enos was in the Union military and spent a short period of time in Kentucky. He was rewarded land all over Arkansas for time served. I have most records. Most researchers feel Enos had two wives and the fourth and fifth child were by second wife. Anyway anyhting I have you are welcome to , Thank you Deb Biggs
