Thank you so very much for taking the time to post this. A brick wall of many years has just fallen. Daniel (Jr.) is my husband's 2nd great grandfather and all we knew of his parents was that his mother's maiden name was Hurley. It has been like finding a needle in a haystack, until I decided to look at him again and google. Your efforts are appreciated!

What became of Charity Francis?

I am looking for marriage/death/cemetery records, anything that might tell me what became of Charity Francis, daughter of John Lindell Francis and his wife Elizabeth Morrison. Charity was enumerated as 3 years old in the 1860 census, Wayne Township, and 10 years old in the 1870 census, Jackson Township. That's the last I know of her. Can anyone help me find this lost girl? (Her family moved to Iroquois County, Illinois, in the mid-1870's.)

Mrs. Krause,

I stumbled across this site as I was searching for other information. I am Stanten Danelson's granddaughter. My grandfather passed away last year. Unfortunately, my great uncle Ben passed away a few weeks ago, which leaves no living children of Charles and Gertrude Danelson. However, Ben’s widow Dolores is still alive. Great uncle Ben and great aunt Dolores are the ones that lived on what was once was my great grandfather’s farm.

Some of your information that you have listed below is incorrect in regard to the siblings. I will have to review my documents and correctly send that information on to you.
Only on Findagrave. I had a couple more burials than were listed, but I have added them now. I will see if I can get the photos you requested. There is also Brady, Laura B. Hill (listed twice; I will see if I can resolve the discrepancy). It has been raining, so I'll see if I can get the pics tomorrow.--Susan
I misspoke. Columbia runs into Main Street just below the hill. The streets running through 5-Points are Main, South, and Sixteenth, which ends there. This makes five points. The map in the 1878 atlas covers two pages, and the two parts don't line up, so examine it carefully. They are off by a couple of blocks.

I don't know about the fire insurance maps, but if you can get a hold of the 1878 atlas, look at the maps in the front of the streets of Lafayette. I had forgotten about these.

The name OAKLAND is printed across the blocks paralleling Grove street, just off the area I've known as Five-Points (where Columbia, Main, and 16th streets cross). The Swedish church is pictured and labeled, on Grove St. The part of Main street running from Five Points to Oakland School is labeled Oakland Avenue. In the downtown area below the hill it is Main Street. I'm not sure exactly where the dividing point is. Oakland School is shown on the map. I can't speak for the exact relationship between the blocks labeled Oakland and the School, since they are some distance apart, and only connected by Oakland Avenue, but there must be a story there.

There is a little shopping area at Five-Points. I'm not sure when the name was attached to the intersection and the surrounding area.

When I get a chance, I'll look up a little newspaper article I have about Oakland and Dayton. The Oakland boys came to Dayton for a ball game, if I remember correctly.

Susan

A few tidbits about Oakland Hill:

From an unpublished history of Dayton, Indiana:

Activities in the fall of 1872 included a series of temperance meeting (April 10, 1872, Courier) in Dayton and the organization of clubs promoting U.S. Grant for president. Called Tanners, these clubs put on public demonstrations, often on horseback and in uniform. On August 17 (a Saturday) two such clubs traveled from Lafayette to Dayton, one on horseback and the other in carriages. The town put on a meal for the visitors.

"A grand line of procession was formed, headed by the [Dayton]1 band and our [illegible]. The principal streets were paraded, and then the column was marched to the School House Square [presumably the new Tower School] where a few evolutions were gone through." (1. Mulberry corrected to Dayton on Aug. 20; Courier, Aug. 17, 1872)

Captain Carnahan spoke on behalf of the re-election of Grant and Wilson, and opposing Greeley and the “socalled Liberals.” A Grant and Wilson club was organized with twenty-five members from the town. The Lafayette contingent then returned home, and were twice accosted by men in white hats—once at Oakland Hill and again at the Court House Square (Courier, Aug. 19-20, 1872).

From the Dayton Items, Lafayette Weekly Journal, November 6, 1903
The Dayton Junior foot ball team met an aggregation from Oakland hill last Saturday forenoon and administered a defeat to them to the tune of 20 to 0. Clarence Paden, the Dayton full back, distinguished himself by making three out of four touchdowns. If Clarence continues to improve he will make a strong player for some team in the future. His line plunges were the feature of the game, he making gains of from 5 to 10 yards through almost any point in the line. The following was Dayton’s line up: C., Dwight Baker; l.g., Kirkpatrick; r.g., Roth; l.t., Ralph Biery; r.l., Frank Parker, l.e., M. Parker; f.c, T. Biery; q.b. Bartmess; r.h.b., B. Lewis; l.h.b., John Widmer; f.b., C. Paden; H. Freeman, referee. Score, Dayton 20; Oakland Hill, 0.

Erastus Idaho Miller was born Jan 22, 1864 to William Miller bNov. 17, 1836 and Rachel Grey Miller bOct. 6, 1837. The father of William was John Miller, b1801. Right now I do not have info on siblings of E.I., William, or John. Does any of this info merge with your family?

Beth,
E.I. Miller was my great grandfather. I live near his former home in Tipp. County. I can provide you with more information. Today I am visiting my daughter out of state, but as soon as I return home I will be able to answer some of your questions or check local resources for you.
I am curious about your connection to the family. How are we related? Leona was my grandmother. Are you connected to Arnie from Seattle?

Toni Butcher

I just did a quick search at newspaper archive.com - narrowing the results to Indiana and sorting with date ascending and it looks like there might be some articles there. it is free to join and the articles with green or red next to them are ones you can see.
