WILLIAM H. CORNELL: Was born in Tippecanoe county, Ind., Feb. 21, 1846, and was a son of JOHN AND MARY (BENNETT) CORNELL, long ago deceased. April 2, 1868, he was married in Clinton county, Ind., to ESTHER J. BROWN, who was a native of Ohio, born April 2, 1848. Her parents, long ago deceased, were JEFFERY and MARY (IRWIN) BROWN. Seven children were the issue of this marriage: JOHN J., CELIA dec., LOUISA B. dec., NELLIE dec., LENA L. dec., WILLIAM R. and FRANK B. dec. Comrade CORNELL was living in Tippecanoe county, Ind., engaged in farming when the war broke out and enlisted from there June, 1863, at the age of 17 years as a private; was later made Corp. of Co. A, 116th Ind. V. I. His first term expiring, he was granted an honorable discharge Feb. 9, 1864, at LaFayette, Ind., and re-enlisted May, 1864, at same place in Co. G, 135th Ind. V. I. While in active service, he participated in the battles of Blue Springs, Walkers Ford, Tazwell, Bridgeport, Stevenson, and considerable skirmishing, guard and garrison duty. At the expiration of his second term, he was again granted an honorable discharge September, 1864, at Indianapolis, Ind. His wife's brother, GEORGE ranked as Capt. of Co. K, 72d Ind. V. I. His grandfather, HELI CORNELL served in the U. S. army, during the War of 1812; Comrade CORNELL is a member of Waymire Post, 496, he has been constable and his present occupation is that of a farmer.
