JAMES COLE: Was born in Lorain county, Ohio, Aug. 17, 1822, and was a son of PETER AND MARY (REDFORD) COLE, long ago deceased. In 1835 he came to Tippecanoe county, and was married Feb. 17, 1852, in White Co., Ind. to HELEN M. JOHNSON who was born there in 1833; her father, CHRISTOPHER E. JOHNSON and her mother, ANNIE (GUTHRIE) have passed away. Of this union were born: ROBERT dec., MERSAILLES dec., CLARISSA, ALFRED dec., MARSHALL, ELLA dec., MARY and ALBERT. During the war Comrade COLE served as a private in Co. C, 72d Ind. Mtd. Inf., 3d Brig., 14th A. C. He was engaged in farming when he was enrolled August, 1862, at Buck Creek, Ind., when 40 years old. December, 1862, he was injured while loading wagons at Case City, Ky.; he refused to enter hospital but was incapacitated from duty for several weeks; he was furloughed for thirty days March, 1864, and rejoined his command at Pulaski, Tenn., April, 1864; his active hostilities were Hoovers Gap, Blue Ridge, Chattanooga, Ringgold, Chickamauga Mills, Cave Hill, McMinnville, Farmington, Shoal Creek, Okalona, Woodland, Missionary Ridge, Pumpkin Vine Creek, Dallas, Big Shanty, Noonday Creek, Kenesaw Mt., Snake Creek Gap, Flat Shoals, Atlanta, Decatur, Lost Mt., New Hope Church, Rome, Selma, and Macon; he was granted his honorable discharge July 6, 1865, at Indianapolis, Ind. His brother, JOHN was a member of 12th Ind. Bat. His wife's brothers, MARSHALL, FRANK and ADDISON also served in the war. Comrade COLE belongs to Waymire Post, 496, he is at present engaged in farming and his address is Buck Creek, Ind.
