HENRY BURGHARDT: Of German nationality, was born Feb. 22, 1836, a son of WILLIAM BURGHARDT, deceased. He made his home in Tippecanoe county, Ind., in 1860, and was married in LaFayette, Ind., January, 1866, to MARGARET BALSER who is of same nativity as her husband, born in 1841. Eight children have blessed this marriage, born in the order named: LILLIE dec., JOHN P. dec., GEORGE dec., KATIE dec., ELIZABETH, FRANK, CLYDE and ESTHER. Comrade BURGHARDT was a wagon maker and was 23 years old when he enlisted June 11, 1861, at LaFayette, Ind., as a private in Go. K, 15th Ind. V. I., 3d Brig., 4th A. C. He was subsequently promoted to Corp., and 2d Duty Sergt. Dec. 31, 1862, he was injured by piece of rail in the side of head, caused from an exploding shell which killed two men; he did not enter hospital but remained with his Regt. June, 1864, he was honorably discharged at Indianapolis, Ind., and re-enlisted at LaFayette, Ind., Nov.11, 1864, as a private in Go. G, 30th Ind. V. I. He took active part in several conspicuous battles: Rich Mt., Laurel Hill, Shiloh, Corinth, Perryville, Stone River, Missionary Ridge, Spring Hill, Franklin, Nashville and several skirmishes; he was finally honorably discharged November, 1865, at Victoria, Texas. His wife's brother, HENRY served in an Ind. Regt.; her brother-in-law served in l0th Ind. V. I. Comrade BURGHARDT is still following his trade as a wagon maker and he resides in Romney, Ind.
