THOMAS J. BARNES, the present efficient auditor of Tippecanoe County, was born in Pike County, Ohio, August 21, 1847, a son of SAMUEL and NANCY (RICE) BARNES. SAMUEL BARNES was also born in Pike County, his father being a Virginian by birth, and his mother a native of North Carolina. SAMUEL BARNES grew to manhood in Ohio, and was there married to NANCY RICE, who was born in Gallia County, that State, near Gallipolis, her parents being natives of Harper's Ferry, Virginia. They resided in Pike County until 1848, when, in October of that year, they removed with their family by wagon to Tippecanoe County, Indiana, where the father had bought 469 acres of land above the mouth of Tippecanoe River near Battle Ground. There he made his home until his death, which occurred March 14, 1863. His widow survived him many years, her death taking place May 31, 1885. Both are buried at Battle Ground Cemetery. In politics SAMUEL BARNES was an old line Whig, but became a Republican on the organization of that party. He was an active member of the Methodist Episcopal church, as was also his wife.
THOMAS J. BARNES, the subject of this sketch, was but a year old when brought by his parents to this county, and was reared to the vocation of a farmer on his father's homestead, receiving his education in the Battle Ground Institute. He was married in 1872 to MISS MARY H. MASON, a native of Lafayette, this county, and daughter of E.P. and ELIZABETH (HUNZINGER) MASON, who are now residents of Brookston, White County, this State. They are the parents of four children, named--GERTRUDE MASON, MARY GRACE, THOMAS J. and LOIS CHRISTINE. MR. BARNES followed farming until the summer of 1882, when at the county convention of the Democratic party that year he received the nomination for county auditor, and was elected November following, which office he has since filled by re-election. He has been a member of the County Democratic Central Committee for the past several years, having been appointed such before his election as auditor. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, belonging to the Knights Templar Commandery, and is also a Knight of Pythias.
