GEORGE BAUSMAN, deceased, who was one of the well-known citizens of Sheffield Township, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, October 20, 1812, and was of German ancestry. He was reared in his native county, spending his boyhood days on a farm, and later in life learned the carpenter's trade, which he followed for twenty-one years, becoming a skillful and reliable workman. At the age of twenty-one years he went to Greene County, Ohio, and several years later was married ther to MISS CATHERINE MITMAN, who was born in York County, Pennsylvania, in 1815. Eight children were born to this union, six of whom are deceased--FIANNA, LILLY, SARAH E., MARY, CHARLES and CATHERINE. HENRY and ANDREW, the two surviving sons, are among the leading citizens of Sheffield Township.
GEORGE BAUSMAN resided in Greene County until 1851, when he came to Lafayette, this county. He made settlement on section 22, Sheffield Township, where he purchased 151 acres of land, the only improvements made on the place being a small log house and frame barn. He made many improvements, and added to his original tract until he had 422 acres, most of which he brought under cultivation. He died January 15, 1871, his widow surviving until June 11, 1887. Both were earnest and consistent members of the Lutheran church. In his political views he was a Republican. He was a man of industrious habits, honorable in all his dealings, and was one of the highly esteemed citizens of his township.
