HENRY BAUSMAN, one of the prominent men of Sheffield Township, residing on section 22, was born in Greene County, Ohio, April 5, 1843. When a lad of eight years he was brought to Tippecanoe County, and here he grew to manhood, his youth being passed in assisting on the farm, and in attending the district schools at Wyandotte. He enlisted in the war of the Rebellion, September 7, 1861, in Company A, Fortieth Indiana Infantry, and was first under fire at the battle of Stone River. He subsequently participated in the engagements at Tullahoma, Chattanooga, Mission Ridge, Tunnell Hill, Buzzard's Roost, Dalton, Burnt Hickory, Little Kenesaw, Dallas, New Hope Church, Peach Tree Creek and siege of Atlanta, from the first until the last, and also at Jonesboro, after which his regiment returned to Atlanta, when the army was reorganized. MR. BAUSMAN was wounded twice while in the service, being wounded in the left shoulder at Mission Ridge by a spent cannister shot, and at New Hope Church he was struck on the head by a minie ball. He was a brave and gallant soldier, and was honorably discharged at Nashville, Tennessee, December 4, 1864.

In early life his advantages for acquiring an education were very limited, and feeling the necessity of a more efficient education, he attended school a couple of years after his return from the war, first attending the Battle Ground school, at the time considered one of the best educational institutions in this part of the State, and subsequently took a course at the Pittsburgh Commercial College, graduating from the latter in 1867. He then entered the dry goods store of H. D. HESSE at Lafayette, as clerk, and later served in the same capacity for the firm of WOODWORTH & SONS in the same city. He subsequently embarked in the boot and shoe business at Logansport, and after carrying on business there for six months he exchanged his business for 118 acres of land on section 22, Sheffield Township, and has since added to his original tract until he now has 276 acres of Tippecanoe County's choice farming land. He has a good residence and commodious farm buildings, all bearing evidence of the enterprise of the owner. A portion of this land is the old homestead, formerly occupied by his father, upon which are erected a fine two-story house, and one of the finest barns in the county.

MR. BAUSMAN was married October 20, 1870, to MISS EMMA L. FRANTZ, a lady of superior intelligence and refinement, a daughter of ELI FRANTZ, a prominent citizen of this township. This union has been blessed with three children -- NELLIE, born September 4, 1872; ADA and IDA (twins), born December 27, 1874. In politics MR. BAUSMAN is a Republican, and is an ardent supporter of the principles he fought to preserve. Both he and his wife are members of the Presbyterian church. He has always taken an active interest in any enterprise for the advancement of his township and county, and is classed among the active and public-spirited men of his township, and by his fair and honorable dealings he has gained the confidence and respect of all who know him.
