SAMUEL DAVIS, residing on section 5, Sheffield Township, was born in Butler County, Ohio, in 1823, his father MOODY DAVIS, being one of the earliest settlers of that county. MOODY DAVIS was born in the State of Vermont, January 7, 1785. He married REBECCA MORGAN, a native of Boston, Massachusetts, born May 26, 1788, and of the eleven children born to this union nine reach years of maturity. Five are living--MOSES, in Clinton County, Indiana; EZERIAH, in Onoka, Minnesota; URSULA, in Butler County, Ohio; SAMUEL, our subject, who is the youngest son, and AMANDA, in Winnebago County, Illinois. The father removed west a few years after his marriage, being in Cincinnati, Ohio, as early as 1816, when that city was a mere hamlet. Shortly after this date he settled with his family in Butler County. He was a mechanic and followed the trade of a millright for many years, putting up many mills in the pioneer days of Ohio. He died February 25, 1835, his widow surviving him until April 2, 1849.

SAMUEL DAVIS, whose name heads this sketch, was reared in Butler County to agricultural pursuits, which he has followed through life with good success, and it may here be mentioned that the family almost without an exception, have succeeded well in life. MR. DAVIS settled where he now resides January 1, 1856. Seventy-four acres of this farm was entered from the Government by DR. HOREM, who erected a log house on the place and sold it. After passing through several hands it was purchased by the subject of this sketch, who has made most of the improvements. He erected his present fine brick residence in 1874 at a cost of $5,500, which is located on a natural building site, and the entire surroundings are in keeping with his elegant residence. This is one of the most beautiful homes in Tippecanoe County, and everything about the place indicates the taste and thrift of the proprietor.

MR. DAVIS began life a poor boy and from an early age made his own way in the world. He commenced by working on a farm in the summer, and in the winter chopped wood at 25 or 30 cents a cord, and by strict frugality he accumulated a little money, which he invested in land, and from this small beginning he has acquired a competence. MR. DAVIS was first married in Butler County, Ohio, to ABIGAIL LINLEY, who was born in Hamilton County, Ohio, and died in Tippecanoe County, in December, 1872. She left at her death two daughters, named ALICE and ADELINE. MR. DAVIS was second time married to MRS. AMELIA TRAVIS, a native of Pickaway County, Ohio, and a daughte rof JOSEPH and MARY (MORRIS) GOUGAR, both of whom were born in the State of Ohio. MRS. DAVIS was reared in Pickaway County. In 1863 she came to Tippecanoe County, to visit her sister, MRS. SAMUEL LUTES, of Union Township, and was first married to MR. TRAVIS, who died in Lafayette in 1871.
