Thank you very much for your hard work. I really appreciate your willingness to index these papers. I know that it is not an easy job but please know that those of us with family in Switzerland County early really do appreciate your hard work.
Sincerely,
Maggie

I am hoping that my Mother and I will have Edmond Cotton and Sally Dorsey's book ready to go the printer by the end of the year. It has thirty years of research along with court records that were found last year that provides all of Edmond's grown children. The book goes through all of Edmond's descendants that we know of. I would be happy to check your husband's line. You can send what you know and I will check it. We would be happy to add any photos or data that you would like to add. We are trying to make sure that this data gets out. We are not selling the books because of the price but we are putting together PDF files of the book and all supporting documents to go to libraries. My email address is familytreemagicatyahoodotcom. Replace at with @ and dot with . I do this to minimize the amount of spam that I receive.

Thank you!
this is my husband's line and all the people I can ask questions from have pasted on so I am kinda' going at this blind... His great grandfather was Adrian Lynch (1900-1921) he died when his grandfather was a baby so that is another hard line to confirm.
Adrian was the son of
Rhonda Emma Lamar (I have seen it as Emma Rhonda too)
who was the daughter of Nancy Cotton (1840-1870)
daughter of John Cotton
son of Sarah Dorsey (1776-abt. 1820)

Does this sound right?

I too am looking for Indiana tax lists around the same time period. I have read (and cannot remember where) that few lists have survived over the years. Jane Eagelsfield Darlington has published tax lists for a number of counties in Indiana (see Indiana Tax Lists), but the only list for Switzerland County in this book is for 1843. A list of delinquent land taxes for 1821, Switzerland County, can be found in the Indiana Genealogist. Fort Wayne IN: Mar 1998. Vol. 9 Iss. 1. That is all I have been able to find. It might be worthwhile checking with the county courthouse to learn whether they have any lists.

If William, John and Richard Burns were young men, you might also try to learn if any militia rosters for Switzerland Co. still exist.

Don, I would love to be able to give you that information but there is not a John Lock who married a Malinda in the book at all. The two John Locks listed are as follows, John A. Lock who married a Mary E. Pitman 21 Sep. 1861 and John W. Lock who married Corintha M. Blodget 5 Nov. 1871 - I was also curious so I checked the marriage records on ancestry with the same results. The same goes for Henry & Bessie?there are two Henry's listed one who married Sarah Jane Tower 11 Feb. 1855 and a Henry D. who married a Mary Rutherford 6 Dec. 1876 also nothing on ancestry of this couple. I know it was common to go to another County or to Kentucky back then but the Ancestry database having nothing is a problem the Indiana State Library no longer has the Indiana Marriage Collection up and neither does INGenWeb, but Ancestry does have the database 1800 - 1941 and no luck there.

Sounds like you are hooked, I also want to thank Don for his excellent help. Enjoy your search!

I knew your family should be there because I see the name Lock so frequently entering information on the Switzerland County INGenWeb site. I now have the book Switzerland County Marriage Records 1831 - 1885. It is an Index of names of brides and grooms. Records from January 1831 - Dec. 1853 (compiled by Mrs. James Knox) do not have a book or page number but the records from were 1854 (copied by Ruth M. Sleven) does have dates and book and page numbers. I will be happy to do look ups if anyone would like.

Nancy. Not related, just trying to help. I am going to take you backwards in time. In the 1930 census for Switzerland county, Craig township, Dist 2, page 5, the family was headed by Henry Lock, 56, married at 23, a farmer on a general farm, and included his wife Bessie, 53, married at 19, his son John Harvey, 15, and his daughter Mary Ione, 12. All born in Ind as were all parents. In the 1920 census the family was also in Craig township, Dist 170, page 7, and was headed by Henry Lock, 46, a farner on a general farm, and included his wife Bessie M, 43, his son Chester E, 20, his son John H, 5, and his daughter Mary I, 1 11/12. All born in Ind as were all parents. In the 1910 census the family was in Craig township, Dist 155, pg 7, and was headed by Henry Lock, 26, married 14 years, a farmer on a general farm, and included his wife, Bessie, 23, married 14 years, mother of 4 with 2 still alive, his son Charles, 13, and his son Chester, 10. All born in Ind as were all parents. In the 1900 census the family was in Pleasant township, Dist 140, page 12, and was headed by Henry Lock, 26, born Apr 1874, married 4 years, a farmer, and included his wife, Bessie, 23, May 1877, married 4 years, mother of 2 with all still living, his son Charley, 3, Jan 1897, and his son Chester, 10/12, Jul 1899. All born in Ind as were all parents. Unfortunately Switzerland county marriages for that time are not on line, but if I had to guess I would say that Bessie's maiden name was Scudder. Hope this helps. Don

O.K. Lets go further back. In the 1880 census the family was in Switzerland county, Pleasant township, Dist 170, page 11, and was headed by John W Lock, 45, a farmer, born in Ind, father in Ind and mother in Ky, and included his wife Malinda W, 40, keeping house, born in Ind, father in Scotland and mother in Ind, and the following children all born in Ind, daughter Nancy E, 20, at home (AH), - daughter Mary E, 19, AH, - daughter Emma, 17, AH, - son George W, 16, works on farm, - daughter Annettie, 15, AH, - daughter Jane, 13, AH, - son Harvey, 11, works on farm, - son Alexander, 10, works on farm, - son Harvey, 7, - daughter Lula, 3, and daughter Clara B, 7/12. In the 1870 census the family was also in Pleasant township, page 53, and was headed by John W Lock, 35, farmer, and included Malinda, 28, keeping house, - Nancy E, 10, - Mary E, 8, - Emma, 7, - George, 6, - Annetha, 5, - Jane, 4, and Harvey, 1. All born in Ind. In the 1860 census the family was also in Pleasant township, page 1, and was headed by John W Lock, 25, farmer, and included Malinda, 18, and Nancy E, 7/12. All born in Ind. In the 1850 census the family was also in Pleasant township, and was headed by John Lock, 43, farmer, born in Ind, and included Elizabeth, 45, born in Ky, and the following, all born in Ind, Henry, 22, farmer, - Elizabeth, 15, - John, 14, - Libella, 10, and William Holder, 12. Unfortunately prior to 1880 no family relationship were shown in any census. I believe this John Lock married Elizabeth Rogers in Switzerland county on 10 Mar 1824. Don

Nancy;
Do you have a birthdate for John Harvey Lock or approximate birth date? There were a number of Lock's in Switzerland County. In the 1920 census there is a John Lock who is 12 years old his parents were Arthor/or Arthur Lock and Lillie Lock. I do have some Switzerland County Marriage records and find only 2 John Locks, one married a Corinthia M Blodgett on Nov. 5, 1871 the other married Mary E. Pittman Sept. 21, 1861. There is a William P. Lock who married Sallie Bristow on Sep. 11, 1873. Does any of this sound like it might fit your family.

Sheila Kell

My query is of much more recent vintage than most. I'm looking for any available information concerning Harvey J. Jones and his 2nd wife Jacqueline LNU. Harvey was b Gallatin County 1 Nov 1921 (per death cert) and d 7 May 1967 at the Veteran's Hospital in Louisville. At the time of his death his residence was 707 Pike Street, Vevay, Indiana and he was buried in the Vevay Cemetery.

Following the divorce between Harvey and his first wife Rachel Beatrice Adams contact between the two children of the first marriage and their father ended. Those two children are now deceased, suffering early deaths, as did their father. So I am scratching and scrabbling for information.

Does anyone know the maiden name of Jacqueline? Were there any children of the second marriage? I don't know when Harvey J. Jones moved to Vevay and I do not know if that is where he married Jacqueline and if she is an Indiana native.

Any tidbits would be greatly appreciated.

Katie

Re: William Lock, 1779 (VA) - 1854 (Switzerland Co.)

I do not know very much about William Lock of Switzerland Co. I and several other Lock researchers are following several Lock males (Peter, William, Benjamin, Samuel & Girardus) who lived in Mercer & Lincoln Counties, KY prior to 1800. We are attempting to determine the parents of 3 Lock males: Robert L. Lock, David Lock, and Thomas Lock all of whom were born in these KY counties prior to 1800. Descendents of these 3 men have taken the 67 marker DNA test and match on 66 out of 67 markers, suggesting that Robert, David, and Thomas were likely brothers or first cousins.

I believe that the William Lock who married Elizabeth Teague in Shelby Co., KY in 1797 was probably the same William Lock who lived with presumably his second wife Nancy Keith in Switzerland Co., but I cannot prove it. Everything that I know about the William Lock of KY is summarized in a Nov. 23, 2008 message that I posted on Rootsweb's Lock mailing list.

(Please note that in the mailing list message I indicated that the 1799 Shelby Co. tax assessment indicated that William was 21 or older at the time which, if accurate, would suggest that William was not the same man as the William Lock of Switzerland Co. I have since learned that the 1800 Shelby Co. tax assessment taken on May 18 indicates that William was between 16 and 21. The William Lock of Switzerland Co. would have turned 21 in July of that year. It appears that one of these tax assessments is in error regarding William's age.)

That is about all I know. I have not focused much on William because it does not appear that he was the father of Robert, David, or Thomas Lock. Sorry that I cannot be of more help.

Thanks for the offer. But I did find it, with a little help from a person working in his yard the day I went. Appreciate it anyway.

Go to Findagrave.com. You can search by cemetery name, and there is a map at the bottom of the page. Chapel Ridge is north of 250, and branches off northeast of Aaron Road.

Theodore Lafayette Pickett was b. 2 Mar 1819 in Lexington, Fayette Co., KY. He was the son of John H. "Jack" Pickett and Caroline M. Back Pickett. The John H. Pickett family came to Switzerland County, IN in 1826, spent a few years in Hamilton Co., OH but returned to Switzerland County in the late 1830s.
John H. & Caroline Pickett had ten children. Theodore Lafayette and Mary Ann Lee Pickett had nine children. I can list them for you if you need them.
My sources for Theodore's father:(l) A newspaper account of Theodore Pickett's death on Nov. 16, 1890 gives his date and place of birth but does not list his parents name. It states "He came to Switzerland County with his parents when he was six years old." (2)Vevay Reveille, 23 May 1889 - Gives an account of a surprise birthday celebration for Jeptha D. Pickett, aged 65, and lists among those present, is only brother THEODORE, and his three sisters Mrs. Peter McMAkin, Mrs. Jonathan Myers, and Mrs.Ben Woolf. (3) Vevay Reveille, July 10, 1875 - "Died,Picket - At the residence of his son Jeptha Picket, near Vevay, July 5th, JOHN H. PICKETT, aged 85 years.
I believe this is proof enough that Jeptha and Theodore were brothers and that John H. was their father.
