I have watched the Switzerland Co. board to yield something on my Sarah Phillips/Philips for some time; I was told by the national Scudder Association several years ago that William Scudder's second wife, Sarah Phillips, who is my direct ancestral grandmother, was the child of Isaac Phillips of Switzerland Co. However, the county history names Isaac's children with no mention of a Sarah, and the dates do not allow a possible time for her birth. She has to have belonged to someone else. As soon as I can visit a genealogical library, I will be happy to work on your Abraham and Clark. In the meantime, I'll check every internet site possible. I am close to the Western Reserve Historical Library and infrequently visit the Allen County Library in Ft. Wayne, IN. Will share any findings and appreciate this lead. Are you connected in some way to Sarah?

Looking for parents of Albert Phillips/Philips who married Jane Ann Morgan, dau. of Henry C. and Nancy M. Sherman Morgan, in 1848 in Switzerland Co., IN.
Was Albert a brother to Abraham Philips of Switzerland Co.?
Was he a brother to Clark C. Philips of Switz. Co., IN?
(Both Abraham and Clark C. were married in Switz. County.
Did they have a sister Sarah?
Albert and Jane Ann Phillips moved to Jefferson County and then to Starke Co. (town of Knox). They had a number of children and three of them were named: Abraham, Clark C., and Sarah. Coincidence? or close Connection?
Any info will be appreciated.

Phillips in Switz. Co.

Thanks for your reply and for your offer to keep an eye out for the Phillips that I am looking for: Albert, Abraham and Clark C., who may have been brothers--all were married in Switzerland Co. in late 1840s to 1851. Albert married my great-grandfather's sister, Jane Ann Morgan. Abraham m. a Barbara ...?... (called "Barbary" in the 1860 Census and it seems that they stayed in Switz. Co., at least until after 1860. Clark C. Phillips married a Mrs. Mary Tyler and they disappeared from Switz. Co. to who knows where?
I had hoped to find that these Phillips boys were brothers of the Sarah A. Phillips who married Wm. Scudder; I checked with another Scudder researcher last night and he did not have the parents of Sarah (Phillips) Scudder. Too bad.
Guess we will just have to keep searching. In answer to your question, I don't know if I am related to your Sarah Phillips Scudder.
I have strong Phillips ties: my mother was the daughter of Gabriel and Luella (Morgan) Phillips of Jefferson County (not the Gabriel found in Switz. Co. but perhaps related (?)
Thanks again for any help you can give me.

I don't know how I've missed your message for this many days! Am still looking for any Phillips in Switzerland County and appreciate having your information as a guidepost. Will keep you posted with any new findings. I would really like to know who Sarah's parents are, as that line has remained unexplored and unknown for all the years I have been researching. Thank you again. Jean B

Sarah or Elizabeth Scudder was the wife of Wm. Phillips. another wife was Margret Ann Rolston. The children of wm. and Elizabeth are Catherine b. abt. 1836, Oliver b. abt 1837 and Elizabeth. b. abt 1846. Catherine is my GG grandmother married to Wiles Cook. These mar. records come from the old records of Switzerland Co. Courthouse. It's good to have another researcher. I am in the Switzerland county area and the library and courthouse have very good records for a small County.

Roy, about the time you posted your response to my query, I moved from OH to VA and have never been the same, with all kinds of obstacles to family research. Just found this response from you; appreciated! Am away from home, but will dig into my files on returning next week and may have another question. Thank you.

Hi All-

I am the great(x3)-grandson of Clark C Phillips, so I have information on him. I have not found an obvious connection between him and the other Phillips mentioned in your posts (ie, they were not brothers). Other siblings were Pamelia, Bridget, Abel, Lucina, Augustus, Asa, Harvey, DeWitt and Lee Phillips. Clark did have an uncle names Albert (1806-1864), but it looks like he died in Warren Co, PA. I guess these Phillips could all be cousins though.

Here is what I know about Clark. Rev Clark C Phillips was born in NY State in 1823, the s/o Elisha Phillips (1782 Preston CT - 1840 Russell PA) and Mary E Lewis (1791 Petersberg NY - 1886 Russell PA), who later settled in Russell, Warren Co, PA.

Clark married twice, first to Mrs Mary Tyler on 19 Nov 1845 in Switzerland Co. The couple had two of their own children (Oliver Barr Phillips and Mary Nancy Phillips Garman) and three from Mary Tyler's first marriage.

I suspect that Mary's maiden name was Platt prior to her marriage to Mr Tyler, whose given name I have never discovered.

Clark was a minister with the Christian Church and thus, moved quite often. Shortly after his children were born in Indiana, Clark's family moved to Greene County, OH and later settled near Troy, OH.

Mary was 10 years his senior and died in Troy in January 1889. Clark re-married in Nov 1889 to Elenor Nutter of Liberty, Union Co, Indiana and he lived there until her death in July 1908. I believe he then moved back to Troy OH to live with his daughter Mary Garman until he died in Nov 1908.

Clark Phillips' main lines go back to Rev George Phillips who came to Watertown MA in 1639 and Edmund Lewis who came to Westerley RI about the same time. You can find more info about these folks by searching google for the "Powers-Banks Ancestry" by WH Powers available for free download on google books. I would be happy to share all info I had if you guys find some relation to Clark.

Best,

Matt McDonald
