I am searching for any history of the area to get an idea of living in 1840s in Sullivan County. Was there a newspaper in this area that might mention her parents William A. & Mary Royal. They traveled from Greene County to Sullivan for some reason and I am searching for any information. I will appreciate any help offered. ER

My Gr-Gr-Gr Grandfather was Jonathan Medsker Sr, (1799-1843) of Clark County, IL. I have recently discovered that he was born in Pennsylvania. According to family information that has been passed down, his father's name was Peter Medsker. Jonathan settled in Clark County, IL from Sullivan County, IN in 1828. I found a Peter Medzgar in the 1820 census of Sullivan County, IN and think it may be connected. Based on the information I have collected so far, I am thinking that Jonathan b. 1 Jan 1799, John b. 25 Dec 1799, Elizabeth (Medsker) Ransford b. 1803, Catherine (Medsker) Ransford b. 1808, Hannah (Medsker) Harris b. 1810, and David Medsker b. abt 1812 are children of the above Peter Medzgar, and his wife Barbary.

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone could possible help me indentify my great-great grandmother Audrey Booker's husbands (daughter of Elmer Roscoe Booker and Nora Davidson).

For some reason I seem to think she was married 3 times but I do know when she died her name was Thomas. Don't know who she married after her first husband who was William "Willie" Renner. My Aunt told me that he and his was from Arkansas. From looking through family photos I know he had sister named Bell and several brothers. I don't know anymore about him...but would like to know when they might have gotten married and what happened after they divorced.

Audrey and William had a daughter named Nora Margaret Renner, my great-grandma...but for some reason she was raised by her Aunt Lou and Uncle Theodore Shoptaw.

Audrey was born in 1907 and died in 1957 buried in Stafford Cemetery in Greene County, Indiana.

Audrey, I believed lived in both greene and sullivan counties.

Hi,

I am hoping that someone here might be able to help my with one of my lines.

I believe that my 3rd great grandmother Nora Davidson who married Elmer Roscoe Booker was the daughter of John Davidson and Margaret Edes and that John's parents were John Davidson and Paulina Hackett (possibly Perlina"). I also believe that John (who married Paulina) was the son of Daniel Davidson and Mary Enochs. This is all just a theory that I have as no one in my family knows who the parents of Nora were. So I'm looking for information on John Davidson and Margaret Edes as well as John Davidson and Paulina Hackett (her parents?).

Now for my Booker line it goes like this:

Elmer Roscoe Booker - Nora Davidson
Lewis Marion Booker - Mary Elizabeth Alsman (parents of Elmer)
Harrison Alsman - Mary Elizabeth Davidson
Daniel Davidson - Mary Enochs

Somehow they are connected just hope I'm right about the first part of it.

Can anyone help me?
Daniel Sullivan was born about 1745 and was killed by Indians in 1790 near Vincennes, Indians. They had two sisters, Elenor who was married to Thomas Purcell and Sarah who was married to Zadock Wright. I would like to hear from anyone who would like to trade information. Thanks.

Hammond Family

I am looking for information about the family and descendants of John Hammond and his 1st and 2nd wives: Nancy Pinkston Hammond and Louisa Joseph Kelly Hammond. John was born in Owen Co. Ky in 1816. He left Ky. to work as an engineer on a steamboat at age 16. John married Nancy in 1842 and Louisa in 1858. He served in the 6th Ind. Cav. during the Civil War and the family first resided at Merom and later maybe at Carlisle. I am descended from John's son Charles E. Hammond. Looking for descendants of this family. Louisa was living in Sullivan Co. in 1923, the year of her death. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

PATTON, RING

Looking for others researching the PATTON and RING families of Sullivan County. John PATTON and Mary Ann RING were married in Vigo County in 1843 or 1845 and lived in Sullivan County until the 1860s when they moved to Kansas. There was a Thomas Patton living next door to John in 1850 who was possibly a brother, as both were born in Kentucky. John was born September 9, 1811, and from cemetery note, Thomas was born 1801. I believe Thomas had a son William Nelson Patton who died in 1920, age 88. Mary Ann RING was born in 1827 in Kentucky and I believe she had a brother Martin who died in Kentucky prior to his wife (Barbary Hazzard Ring) and children, plus a brother Henry, moving to Sullivan County in the late 1840s. Mary Ann had evidently married by the time they arrived. There was a Michael Ring living in the county quite early, and I'm wondering how he could have been related. I'm looking for any clues that might help piece things together.

I am trying to determine if John Henry McCammon was born in Sullivan County, Indiana in October 1848. He spent time in Oxford, Johnson County Iowa in the late 1800's and early 1900's but the only Census Record I found said he was born in Louisiana but I have not found any information on him there. He is buried in Oxford, Iowa. The Census Records show that his father was born in Massachusetts and his mother was born in New Jersey. John Henry McCammon is my great grandfather.

Any information on his parents or siblings would be greatly appreciated

Looking for information on John W. Sharp, Isaac Sharp, James F. Sharp and Henry Sharp. All moved from TN to Clay County in 1870. In that census they were respectively, 16, 15, 12, and 10. They lived with Delilah and George Taylor. James F. was married to Eva Harris, daughter of Jacob James Harris of Owen County. If anyone has any information on these folks, or on any of their descendants, please let me know. I have run out of leads of these men. James F. Sharp was my ggradfather. James Jacob Sharp my grandfather, and Paul Norman Sharp, my father.

Thanks much,
Jan Sharp Pounds

She would have been about 67 at that time. I am also looking for information on Jacob James Harris who was with the mennonites who came to Owen County from Tuscarawas Ohio in the 1840-1850's. He was born in Pa in 1825 and died in Clay Co. in 1906. His wife was Mary Ann Shonk d. 1872 Clay Co. Also parents of Henry Jasper Smith b.1840 d.1901 and his wife Nancy J. Hunley. I need to contact the children of any of these siblings or anyone who might have knowledge of this particular DEVORE or Hamilton family. (Bazil & Eliza Carrico were siblings, the children of Reason & Elizabeth Engle Carrico of Sullivan Co., IN. I have lots of info on descendants and ancestors of Carricos, Engles, Cochrans, Woods, Plummers, but can't seem to connect with DEVORES & HAMILTONS.
Thanks for looking,
Jean

Hoping someone on the board might know something about 2 men both on the 1830 Sullivan County, Indiana census named William & Joseph Cowhorn. One is living next to a Joseph Trimble. Tying to determine if the Cowhorn & Trimble families intermarried. I have been tracking a Cowden family who are believed to have married a Trimble. Wondering if Cowden men are misspelled as Cowhorn or vs. versus on other censuses. - Appreciate any help sorting them out. I cannot find Cowhorn names in or near Sullivan County again. - Allan Griffith, Bloomington, Illinois - magrif@verizon.net

I would like some clarification on this individual.

Is there a burial record or cemetery listing of her to verify a date of death? Does anyone know anything else of this woman, as to what her disability was?

Any help would be appreciated.

Blessings, Beth Shanks

Here is what I have:
She is the daughter of Jacob Shanks (1790-1850) and Mary Alumbaugh (1810-1849), and is found in several census records, but the information is conflicting as to her age.

Lorinda SHANKS – She never married, and is noted as deaf, dumb and disabled in multiple sources. I originally thought there were three different sisters. However, I have determined that for whatever reason, the dates are not all correct and they are all the same person.
1840 – believed to be one of the daughters in the Jacob Shanks home (b. 1826-1830)
1850 – “Rhoda” and John SHANKS are in the home of William FRENCH. She is shown as age 9 (b. abt. 1841)
1860 – “Marinda” is in the home of Joel HART, age 26 (b. abt. 1834)
1870 – “Lorinda” is in the home of her brother John, age 40 (b. abt 1830)
1880 – “Rindy” is in the home of uncle, Jefferson ALUMBAUGH (shown as Elmbaw), age 42 (b. abt. 1838)
1900 – “Renda” is in the home of Isaac KEENE (may be HUME), age 76 (b. abt. 1824)
GRIFFITH family in Sullivan Co, IN

There appear to be 3 distinctly different Griffith families at Sullivan Co, Indiana in the mid 1800s. A Robert Griffith I know nothing of except his presence on the census. There is a William C. Griffith, who went by the title Major. This Major William is well outlined in history at Sullivan Co. The Third is my ancestor, William Griffith - b.1816 in Wooster, Ohio. It is believed this William moved to Sullivan Co. Indiana by 1852/53 and died at Sullivan in 1890. His Father and son were both named Philip B. Griffith. That William had 3 wives in Sullivan and many children, most of whom we have well researched. We descendants have handed down history suggesting that the Major William C. Griffith, may be an Uncle to My William Griffith, but we've been unable to prove that connection. I have considerable information to share about the 2 William's and their descendants. Would appreciate contact with anyone interested in sharing data on these two lines.

I believe my Haddon/Hadden relatives came from Sullivan County, Indiana but I'm having trouble making the connection. Does anyone have any family records of Haddons who went to Texas in the 1820's-1860's? I am looking for relatives of an Elizabeth "Betsy" Hadden, who was born in Texas in 1831 to William and ? Hadden. She had a brother, William R. Hadden who was born around 1833 in Indiana. I also show a John Hadden, Henry H. Haddon, William Hadden and Richard Haddon in Texas very early on - in the 1830's and 1840's. Can anyone help?

Children of Louisa Stepp (Rich) (Reed)

I'm trying to work out the logistics of the children of Louisa Stepp and her first husband, Abraham Rich, and her second husband, Seaborn Reed. Per the 1860 Census, Louisa was married to Seaborn Reed and there are 7 children with both Rich and Reed as surnames. One child, in particular, is "Croven S. Reed" who I believe is my Gr-Gr-Grandfather, Craven Shelburn Reed. The dates are odd, however. Calculating his age vs. the census date would lead one to belive that he was born in 1850 (which should make him a Rich) as various family tree postings indicate that Abraham Rich did not die until 1851 and Louisa did not marry Seaborn until 1851 (or thereabouts). In addition, there are children listed with the Rich surname that would have been born several years after the death of Abraham Rich! Louisa apparently died in 1861 after which Seaborn married a Sarah (Bolden?) and began a whole new family.
Any info available that could to make sense of which child came from which father would be greatly appreciated!

Looking for information on Michael Ladson who first came to Sullivan County, Indiana from England. Trying to determine if he was the father of Thomas Ladson. And, what his wife's name was? Eliza Cox? If anyone has any more info on these people, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Can someone please enlighten me on Culbertson Cemetery? I do not find it listed the Greene County Cemetery Books or the Sullivan County Cemetery Books, but family story is that my GG Grandparents are buried there. Has anyone heard of this old Cemetery? These ancestors died in the 1870’s and 80’s., and lived their entire lives in Wright Twp., Greene and Cass Twp., Sullivan Counties. Thanks. Jim Bledsoe

I have three newspaper clippings that were taken from the Dugger Post in 1981. They are reproductions of photos that were taken in the late 1890s-early 1900s.
This Swaby family lived in Sullivan County, IN. There are two family portraits, taken 20 years apart, same people. The names are Milton, Walter, Belle, Hattie, Will, T.J., Julia Ann, Mary, Emma, Mac, and Charlie.
The other picture is of Leo Swaby, son of John and Mattie (Davis) Swaby, and his friend Oscar Hattery.
I would like to see these pictures go to someone in the Swaby family who is doing research. Anyone out there?
Email me with your address, and I will send these pictures to you.
Bonnie
I am looking for any information on this family, particularly FLorence's maiden name and William's father's name. William was born 31 October 1889 or 1890 in Sullivan County. Florence was bour approx. 1891 in Indiana.

William registered for the draft for WWI and WW2. In 1917, he listed his date of birth as 1890, for WW2, he listed it as 1889 and was in Jefferson Township.

William Hosea nad Florence had at least 8 children: William B. b. 1910, Carl b. 1911, Jesse Alfred b 1912, Audrey b. 1915, Helen E.(or L.) b. 1916, Viola M. b. 1918, Mary A. 1919, Betty W. b. 1925, all born in Sullivan County.

Also, William probably had a sister named Hazel and his mother was Rebecca who was widowed by the time of the 1900 census and living in the home of Steven Milburn working as his housekeeper. She later married Mr. Milburn.

Any help with this family would be GREATLY appreciated.
I came across a newspaper clipping that might be of interest to those researching the Bedwell family.

JASONVILLE MAN DROWNS IN STRIP PIT
A 29-year old RR 2 Jasonville, Indiana man drowned in a stripper pit north of Dugger Friday afternoon May 8, following a boating accident while he and a companion were fishing.
Roy L. Bedwell was recovered from about 12 feet of water by Sullivan City firefighters at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Antioch Pit, two miles north of Dugger.
Sullivan County Sheriff Robert Hiatt said that Bedwell and Dorothy Aaron, 46, R2, Jasonville, were fishing at the pit from a boat which apparently turned over. Aaron told Hiatt she managed to hang on to the boat, but that Bedwell went straight down and was not seen again.
The body was recovered by firefighters Mike Cox and Don Brock and by Ed Hill from the Dugger Town Marshal's Office. Sheriff Hiatt, Conservation Officer John Martin and Coroner Bill Tennis investigated the incident.
(Source: The Dugger Post, May 14, 1981)
FRENCH Connection to Vigo Co. Indiana ... more definition given for this ages old query.

Soon after I began my research around 1996 of my family history ... I had heard from newfound family out of Sullivan Co. (Cosette FRENCH), & the library in Fort Wayne Indiana ... that two FRENCH brothers settled in Indiana early on.

It was said that one brother named Samuel (no proof though) settled in the Vigo Co. area, while the other one named Henry settled in the Sullivan Co. area. This was during the Frontier days of the Indiana Territory.

Sullivan Co. family had mentioned they came to America in 1801.
Then in 1998, I received my first E-mail response from Ken REED after I had E-mailed him about a Samuel FRENCH he was researching, per an interest board posting on the Internet.

His response blew my mind, for he stated he had a James FRENCH (in Vigo Co.) that was born in 1801 on the Atlantic Ocean en-route to America, & that this James' father was reportedly a Samuel FRENCH. This was brand new & incredible news, which matched information I had been hearing.

And although I do not presently have new information on this Samuel FRENCH, I do have information that is new to me & may provide further credence to this scenario.

For the first time in an old 1938 Sullivan Co. article I found in 2006 (per my recent posting here), I learned that Brig. Gen. Henry FRENCH had a brother named James that was living in Vigo Co., & that their father was likewise named James. This was the first time that I'd heard that. This news & article was also a big find for me.

And at first this made me wonder if just maybe the Vigo Co. James FRENCH b.1801 might be that brother to my Henry FRENCH in Sullivan County. But of course then, that would have made his father to be likewise a James FRENCH if true, versus a Samuel. It was simply a possibility that I contemplated.

However, some Vigo Co. historical information sheds more light on this.
In the History of Linton Township, Vigo Co., IN. is the quote "...The most of the early settlers came from Kentucky, the first being Moses EVANS, who arrived in 1812, and settled on the prairie now bearing his name. About the same time Thomas and William POUND and Hamilton REED came in, also James FRENCH, who was a bell-maker and did a large business, trading bells to the Indians, who at the time were numerous in the vicinity. Shortly after his arrival he was driven off by them, but returned again when Fort Harrison was erected..."

Now after reading this Vigo Co. historical information, the James FRENCH mentioned doing buisness with Indians & settling there in 1812 ... this is certainly a different James FRENCH than the one born in 1801 on the Atlantic.

Although it's not entirely out of the question that the younger (1801) James FRENCH was my Henry's brother, it's a more remote possibility with this other information now.

I would think this older James FRENCH might've been Henry's brother. Of course, this is pretty hard to nail all the connections down accurately, with little information to go by.

After receiving a little paperwork from a Sullivan Co. FRENCH last spring, I was told that Adam FRENCH (deceased since 1980) was researching & planning to do a book on Gen. Henry FRENCH & the family, but then his house burnt down with much of the records.

But written down on a piece of paper is a short list of Gen. French's brothers. It shows James, Jacob, Joseph, George, & David FRENCH.

Also, in the Vincennes Jan. 1st, 1816 Western Sun paper, there are ads alerting certain persons that there is mail for them to pick up at Vincennes (the main post office).
And three of those persons were Henry, Jacob, & George FRENCH.

Donald A.
Juliette Wolfe was born in 1811 to Benjamin and Isabella Shepherd Wolfe. After marrying William Hastings, she had a daughter who is burried at Shaker prairie before moving to Kansas. In 1856 William was the victim of murder (know as one of Kansas' 10 most known) and Julliet and her children moved back to Sullivan. There I lose track of her and the children who returned with her. She lives near other family members in the 1870 & 1880 Census reports. I believe Isabella was living with her when she died. But I find no obituary or death or remarriage for Juliette. She is my ggreat grandmother and probate records show she managed a bad situation very well.
Her eldest, Thomas Benton Hastings, stayed in Kansas, but I have no knowledge of the whereabouts of B. W., William S, J. V. or lucia. Would really like to find this family

My grandparents are buried in Little Flock Cemetery. Unfortunately we haven't gotten their grave markers. It has been over 5 years since they have passed. Does anyone know how to get in contact with the main office? I have googled the cemetery and can't find anything. It's greatly appreciated. Thank you! Any answers please email to NanaAnna83@aol.com Thanks again, Melissa

Voyage of 1801 from Wales to America ... Does it Relate to Henry FRENCH ???

II have just found some new interesting info that I wonder if it could possibly relate to my Henry FRENCH somehow, & to his coming from Wales.

Here's the following "excerpt of interest" that I've found from my recent research:

......
In 1801, a young Welshman by the name of David Pugh, a native of Maesyfed, Radnorshire, South Wales, after a tedious and perilous voyage of three months, landed at Baltimore, Maryland. (He then went on to purchase large amounts of Ohio land to settle, as that new State opened up to the Pioneers.)

http://ohio.llgc.org.uk/erth-radnor.php
......

My Henry FRENCH was living in the Dayton Ohio area in 1808 at the time when it was first being settled (Preble Co. OH. was founded in 1808). Of which Henry FRENCH's history indicates that he was born in Wales & arrived to America likewise in 1801.

Therefor, I was researching other nearby Ohio Settlers, of which a Samuel & a Jacob FRENCH showed up nearby on Butler Co. OH.'s 1807 Tax Records.
(Not sure who they are.)

And I then learned of David PUGH's early settlement in Ohio, just a couple of years removed from his sailing from Wales to America in 1801.

This so far is the "only" voyage overseas that I've learned about, coming from Wales in that exact year.
And in case other researchers may know more about this to shed some light on it, I wanted to go ahead & post this information now.

This David PUGH made several trips back to Wales, with many others coming back from there & settling on his land in Ohio.

This is fascinating, & I wonder where this information will lead us. Time will tell.

Sincerely,

Donald A. French
One more picture from my grandmother's collection depicts the ensemble of students at some sort of school
http://www.ucolick.org/~sla/scans/Sullivan/
Although this could be a school in Adams county, my impression is that I recognize Emma and Martha Marlow at ages that appear consistent with the date 1884 that can be read on the sign. In that case this must be about 2.5 miles northeast of Sullivan.

pictures: Marlow, Pittman, Gambill, Palmer's Prairie Church

My grandmother gathered pictures.
http://www.ucolick.org/~sla/scans/PalmersPrairie/
contains a photo of Palmer's Prairie Church
http://www.ucolick.org/~sla/scans/Marlow/
contains pictures of William Marlow and his second wife Rachel Susannah Yadon Keene Marlow, plus their daughter Emma C. Marlow and her husband Theodore "Dode" Pittman and their sons Max and Denzil, plus a number of Marlow reunions on postcards. The postcards were probably sent by a daughter of William and Rachel's first daughter Sarah to her aunt Martha "Fannie" Frances Marlow Christen. There is also another picture of Palmer's Prairie Church and the Marlow school house. There is also a picture of baby Eugene Lowell Gambill, whom I presume is the grandson of Sarah.
http://www.ucolick.org/~sla/scans/Marlow/Emma/
contains more pictures from the Theodore Pittman/Emma Marlow family including one that probably contains my grandmother Naomi. The final picture on that page seems likely to correspond to the Emma and Theodore Pittman household as it existed in the 1900 census, with both of their mothers living with them.
